I'm losing my mind these days. Here are a few things my wife believes.

1) Fox news is fair and balanced.
2) Sara Palin is more qualified than Obama.
3) The democrats are responsible for the current financial problems.
4) Bush is a great president.
5) Every fact I show her that goes against what she already things is simply a lie of the left wing bolggers.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! MAKE SURE YOU KNOW A PERSONS POLITICS BEFORE YOU MARRY THEM.

Anyway, is there a list out there of all the financial de-regulation passed say since the Reagan years? I dont want a list that shows only things passed by republicans. I want a complete list, who proposed it and who signed off on it. I have been looking for such a list but have not found what I want.

Maybe if I give her the list with the bill numbers attached she wont be able to say I'm "spewing left wing blogger lies"

Yours truly,
Losing my freaking mind

How long have you been married and how long was the engagement, may I ask?

It's things like this that make me tell every couple I meet that they should live together for a while before they get married.

What did your ____ think of the CBS interview of Sarah Palin with Katie Couric?

EDIT: Welcome to the board, by the way hug2.gif

Peace be with you, friend. There is such thing as love during wartime - and the wave of politics will subside.

The nature of the machine - infotainment industry, media politics, etc., is to separate, divide and alienate people from each other using politics and propaganda.

Note that her trust for you is subsumed by the propaganda machine.

Be cheered by the Wall Street Bailout - Americans are stepping up and saying "NO!" without worrying about who else is saying no, or what THEIR belief is, or whether Rush endorses it or not.

Wife has her head in the propaganda machine. Be patient, stay away from the politics-as-conflict model, and this too may pass.

If we could pound common sense into each other, the world might be a better place.

And to paraphrase Churchill, everyone has the right to be a fool now and again - some just abuse the privilege. Ignore that parts that aren't really her - the talking points - and stick with the person.

I have in-laws that have sold the birthright of reason and common sense to the propaganda machine. They become very afraid when they come to close to reality - it is like a person hanging off a cliff, whose thoughts wander off into happiness - until they open their eyes. Rude shock, that.

We were together for two years before getting married. One year of that we lived together. Basically she never cared much about politics untill Obama showed up. Seems he scares some people.

But yes, you guys are right, I should relax. I was just watching this weeks funny Sara Palin clips and now I'm feeling much better laugh.gif

Oh, South, I am so sorry. I can totally sympathize. My parents have gone off the deep end with their Republicanyness. My father has declared (with a straight face, no less):

1) George Bush will be known one day as the greatest American president, ever.
2) Even though he is not the most eloquent speaker, Bush should be respected (revered?) unconditionally because of his office.
3) We must continue the Iraq war because if not, the "terrists" will bring the fight to our shores.
4) It's essential to continue the war in Iraq instead of Afghanistan because Iraq is flatter and the "terrists" are easier to shoot. Flatter. I shit you not.
5) Trickle down economics would work if all of the welfare mothers would get out of the way.
6) The Republican party got screwed out of their preferred candidate, Mittens Romney, and it should have been him because the country needs a successful businessman to run the show.

Did I mention that my stepmother is a social worker? Really--a Republican social worker. I'm surprised she hasn't caused a rift in the space-time continuum...

Good luck to you! My only advice--apply tequila liberally until November 5th. Then you have four years to deprogram your beloved.

When the National Enquirer broke the news a few months ago about John Edwards' extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter, there was a steady stream of stories and discussions about it on FOX News although Edwards was no longer a candidate by then. Yet FOX News has been ignoring the same tabloid's report about an extramarital affair between current vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her husband's former business partner, Brad Hanson.

Here's a suggestion. Start buying her books on tape. Some title suggestions:

Shock Doctrine: Naomi Klein

Bush On The Couch

Fair Game: Valerie Plame

1984: George Orwell

Also, rent Paddy Chayevsky's "Network" and watch it with her. Then point out the fact that Fox News sued in Florida courts for the right to LIE on their "newscasts".

I share your pain. I am married to a member of the Republican old farts club. While he is a great guy, the stuff that comes in the mail is so mean-spirited. Here are some examples from the "California Republican", Sept-Oct 2008 issue that just arrived. Comic strip features 2 old boys sitting on a park bench. First old boy says "Rush is right! McCain is no conservative". Second old boy says, "I just might sit this election out". Then an intelligent looking woman in sensible shoes walks by wearing "Bring our Troops Home", "Choice", "Hillary", and "Obama" buttons. The good ole boys' response, "OK, I'll vote". ahhhhhhh!!!!! We must stand up and speak out or be lost to cowboy style, ready, shoot, aim - McCain.

All you have to do is hit back with the facts, they are all over, Greg Palast is a good one, because he will skewer d's and r's alike. He knows that all politics are dirty and lying, what he will do is applaud someone who tries to rise above the fray, hence his support of Obama. Read The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, Or Armed Madhouse, the taser book. From there go to Al Franken, his books are accurate, and the appendix has links to his sources, read for your self the truth. If that doesn't work, ask yourself, "Do I get it when I want it?" If not, GET OUT!!!

I can totally sympathize with you. I've had numerous arguments with my 80 y/o mother about this current election. She won't even ride in mine or my daughter's car because we have an Obama 08 bumper sticker. The sad thing is that we used to agree politically.
hm1342
My main complaint about the media is that there is no one source that is truly "fair and balanced". Other than the morning moderators on C-SPAN and sometimes Glenn Beck (a libertarian at heart) there isn't anyone willing to thoroughly research all aspects of an issue and report on only the facts. I listen to Limbaugh, Hannity and others assert that only Democrats are to blame for whatever current crisis we are in. Then I can go over to MSNBC and watch Rachel Maddow, Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews, etc., say absolutely nothing positive about Republicans. Both sides are equally ludicrous in their assumptions and only serve to further divide political parties and people. My only advice is to listen to as many different sources as possible and come to your own conclusion. Bill Maher said that the American public is too stupid to be governed (The Rachel Maddow Show, September 16th). I think we have way to many single-minded shows to give us a clear picture of what is going on. Best of luck to you! smile.gif

Maybe your step mom is a Republican because she is a social worker... Maybe she's had to deal with the worst of the worst and she's all like "Fuck all yah motherfuckers" I don't mean to be cruel, but i used to work with people who were mentally challenged and then later in a homeless shelter. You have good eggs and you have bad eggs, but you mostly deal with the worst. It can change the way anyone thinks. That's why I like being a courier. I help people (by transporting their blood). But I never have to see, meet or deal with them. I find that when you have to deal with people on a constant basis, advocate and listen to them 24/7, it changes you... Just a thought.

Thanks to Ronald Reagan, he gave the republicans the mantra of "If you say something long enough and loud enough people will believe it."

Steve Dusey of Fixed Noise's Fox and Friends said that anything that happened before 1991 belongs on the history channel. So I guess Fixed Noise can stop bringing up McSame's war record since the Vietnam war occured before 1991.

John McCain

Ask your wife to explain Sen. McCain's vote on the GI Bill of 2008?

U.S. Senate

John McCain says he takes care of veterans. He hasn't casted a vote in the Senate since April. He wasn't there to vote for the bill. And yes neither was Sen.Kennedy, but he is having health problems so his absence is excused.

Also ask your wife why the Disabled Amercians Veterans and The IAVA gave McCain such low marks and Obama such high marks?

That reminded me of McCain's comment in the debate last night, about how it would be tough to fight terrists in Waziristan (?), because it's "rough terrain". Living in the last century. The 9/11 terrists did fine in city terrain.

Maybe divorce would be easier but, maybe since Palin is so great...suggest to her that you and her join the same church as the governor. It is the one where it is a mandate that the women recognize that the man is always right. Look at it as a Win-Win. She immerses herself in Palin culture and you can tell her to shut up and she is obligated to do that. Besides...you will probably get her to cook ups some moose burgers and fetch the beer for those Monday night football games without the slightest complaint...because, well the woman is subordinate to the man...always in the Palin church.

Extremely wise words. The "propaganda machine" is insidious. You can't argue it away, you can't point out facts and expect her to see reason. Whatever it is that makes propaganda work on some people, can't be cured with facts. You'll want to think so, but it can't be, so please, for the sake of your marriage, don't try to get her to see reason. You'll only torture yourself and your marriage if you keep trying. She is apparently someone who you love, NOT based on her intellectual prowess. The fact that you love her shows you that she deserves you. I know it's painful - you can see from this thread that many of us on here have family members who respond exactly as your wife does, and we know that absolutely nothing gets through to them. Except for MAYBE one thing, rarely:

QUOTE
I have in-laws that have sold the birthright of reason and common sense to the propaganda machine. They become very afraid when they come to close to reality - it is like a person hanging off a cliff, whose thoughts wander off into happiness - until they open their eyes. Rude shock, that.

Steve saying this reminded me of a good friend of mine, who dumped me when I was the one that made her open her eyes. It scared the friggen hell out of her. Then she went through a personal trauma, and something about that made her realize that having her eyes open, on the edge of the cliff, was the only way she could possibly continue to exist. It was a hard journey for her.

So all I'm saying is that the people who receive the propaganda and run gung ho with it are frustrating as hell, but aren't evil or necessarily stupid (even though we think that 20 gajillion times a day) - it's something else, but they still deserve our love. You can't change her. *GREAT BIG HUG*

seriously, if she wants to keep up the ostrich syndrome by a refusal to look at facts, then there's really no hope.
you could try marriage counseling if it effects you so much that its driving a wedge.
other than that i really don't know what to say, other than review your relationship and if this is the only "snag" you have, well okay.

Daddy, is that you?
No, seriously, my stepmother- Ima Major-Bitch - has those same five exact mental deficiencies.
I finally got her to shut up about politics by saying, "Ima, why do you need to lie to make your points? Are you too lazy or too illiterate to form your own opinions?"
Of course, I'm not sleeping with Ima, so you might want to soften that up a bit for your own personal use.
HOWEVER -- I am sleeping with my boyfriend, Python Pete, who was a registered repukelican when I met him. Fortunately, I have two things in my favor with Python Pete:

1. I argue to win, and by win, I mean, "say in a loud, firm voice that I am right."

2. He likes to read and still had enough thinking power to process the truth about his political party.

Right now, he is a left-leaning centrist. Ok, so I had to use the "You wanna be like your sister, Assholierthanthou? Be my guest!" card twice, but we always made up before bedtime.

On everything else, we negotiate and compromise and give and take..... but not on politics. I will not budge. And he knows it. <evil smirk>
So, how comfortable are you telling your wife to STFU about politics because lying is beneath her and you're not in the mood?

Hugs,

Bonnie Bitch

Oh, honey -- can't do the Religion threads yet -- I'm still on probation. I also tend to hold grudges, so I need to do some letting go and start afresh.
I've been busy between work, school, and shacking up with Python Pete. My sister, Nurse Beverly Bitch, RN, moved out. Actually, she moved across the landing into the townhouse next door with a girlfriend from work. The only thing that has changed is that we knock and wait to be invited in before barging into each others' homes. It's kinda sad, but it's working out for everyone. And I got kinda burned out last time around. So I regrouped, focused on me...... oh, and I'm learning Spanish. I thought I'd hate it, but it's so much FUN!! Ok, the verbs are nasty, but the rest of it is FUN!

DeepSouth, I sympathise. I visited my 85 year-old mother and 55 year-old brother Friday night. Mom has been a lifelong ® all her life. She doesn't really pay attention to politics; she hates politics, and lumps both parties together in one big ball of dislike. But still, believes republickens are better than democrats. Wild horses would not drag a democratic vote out of her. And she only gets her news from the major networks: no cable; and reads conservative Orange County newspapers. My brother tells she mutes the TeeVee when Obama is on. I thought Sarah Palin was the kind of twit my mom would just hate- five kids, highly crazy religious, and a sport hunter. But for some reason, Palin is OK to be VP, because she's a repub.

We were watching the debates over dinner, and I tried to listen; but everytime it was Obama's turn, she'd start talking about one thing or another. When it was McCain's turn, she would listen and not talk over him. So that's when I started up the conversation. I never got shushed or anything; she really doesn't care about the debates that much, but she wouldn't even listen to what Obama would say. And it's not because he's black. We lived in Metairie, LA in the early sixties when Mississippi was burning, and she and my father both agreed that black people were getting a raw deal in this country, and supported civil rights. She just won't listen because he's a democrat, and it drives me crazy, because she's an otherwise rational, intelligent person. She even knows I'm gay, and doesn't have a problem with that.

But she does have a problem with Mexicans. "They get everything for free." "They can't do anything right." "All those fat mexican women buying sugary cereal for their fat mexican kids." Now, I have worked alongside Mexicans all my life in the restaurant business. I work for a Mexican restaurant owned and almost entirely staffed by Mexicans. We've got a very diverse clientele, and one thing I've learned is one group of people is no better or worse than any other. So I have to bite my tongue when the hate comes out. My brother is on the same page with her.

He's no republicken, and he sees right through McCain, but he's a Paulite Libertarian as well as an Alex Jones Bullhorn Blockhead. So I get Building 7 going in one ear and the bad, bad mexicans out the other. And they wonder why I don't visit often.

They're my family, and I love them both, but Jeez Louise, it's difficult sometimes. I can dispute with my brother, and call him on his b.s., but I can't rile mom. It would not change her thinking, and only upset her. But I'm aching to tell her that the country that she and my late father fought for in WWII has been slowly dismantled ever since her Ronald Reagan took office.

Welcome to the RRMB, and good luck with your wife. If you love her, you'll both just have to agree to disagree, and realize when you vote in November, that your votes will cancel each other out: No one loses, but of course, no one wins either. Keep after her if you're up to it: maybe you can find a way to get the message through to her.
