WASHINGTON - Attorney General Michael Mukasey appointed a prosecutor Monday to pursue possible criminal charges against Republicans who were involved in the controversial firings of U.S. attorneys.

His move follows the leading recommendation of a Justice Department investigation that harshly criticized Bush administration officials, members of Congress and their aides for the ousters, many of which were seen as politically motivated.

Mukasey named Nora Dannehy, a career prosecutor, to direct the probe.

Senators praised the appointment of a special counsel and warned President Bush against pardoning anyone who is found to have broken the law.

Any such pardon, said Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., would be seen by the nation as an admission of wrongdoing.

Why did Mukasey cave?

Hoping to keep his job during an Obama Presidency?

These guys dont care that being pardoned would appear to be an admission of guilt. Their entire life is based on guilt, if the average American knew the kind of crap most politicians and insiders are pulling on a daily basis, they would get very angry.

They would wear their pardon as a badge of honor that they managed to screw over the American people and get away with it.

Oh, wow! Like Bush or any of his criminal cohort give a damn about that. That gang of thieves is going to walk away laughing in January.

There can only be two reasons:

1) To hold a reverse show-trial to "clear" the administration so they don't have to use the "guilt admitting" pardon process; or

2) Because Mukasey has been provided some air tight proof that he believes he will be unable to cover up. He knows that he will be put on trial for abuse of powers and obstruction of justice in the next administration if he doesn't bring the case forward while he still has the power and responsibility to do so.

Of course, he will use every delay tactic as possible to make sure nothing too damaging comes out until at least after the election, and preferably until after Jan when Bush and his cronies have moved everything to Columbia, or wherever it is that they won't be extradited from.

Domenici Key in Firing of Iglesias, Report Says
By Michael Coleman/ (Albuquerque) Journal Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON- A Justice Department report released Monday concludes that Sen. Pete Domenici was the "primary factor" in the firing of former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias in New Mexico, and that Iglesias was not dismissed for poor job performance as some top department officials claimed.

Attorneys say Dannehy good fit for investigation
By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN – 1 day ago

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Federal prosecutor Nora Dannehy has taken on Connecticut's most powerful politicians, sending a governor, a state treasurer and others to prison for corruption.

Now the nation's top law enforcement official wants her to pursue possible criminal charges against Republicans involved in the firings of nine U.S. attorneys.

Colleagues and adversaries say she's up to the task.

"No one will outwork her. No one is going to be smarter than her," said Mike Clark, a retired FBI agent who investigated former Connecticut Gov. John G. Rowland. "No one will conduct the investigation with more integrity than her."

Attorney General Michael Mukasey on Monday named Dannehy, 47, to look into lingering questions about the firings after a Justice Department report harshly criticized Bush administration officials, members of Congress and their aides for the ousters, which many considered politically motivated.
