Anyone Remember S&H Green Stamps?
I remember I was able to get my first fishing rod with 2 books of these stamps redeemed at the S&H store.

Yup. I remember them. Mom would bring them home and it was my job to lick and stick those things. It was just one of the ways myfamily stretched a dollar. Man o' man. Here we go again. I was watching one of those Republican talking heads on CNN. He must have been about mid 30s. That turkey can't remember when things were not so good for the working man...I doubt he would work the Christmas tree lots like my dad had to to keep the family above water. These turkeys don't have a clue.

All of us who remember them are showing our age! I used to love to stick them in the books for my mom. I don't ever remember getting anything out of them, though. I think we were too poor and my Mom used them for crap she needed.

I am a very young 45 and I do remember the S&H green stamp store that was on May Avenue and 63rd in Oklahoma City where I grew up.
We use to get the green stamps from the local Safeway where were we shopped. And I remember that was when there were women working the old cash registers (with Beehives thank you) where they would punch in the prices themselves. I use to love that as a kid.
I don't remember if we actually got anything from the store, but, I remember going in there with my folks.
Ah, memories. That was when Oklahoma actually was a Blue State. Carl Albert, from Oklahoma, was the Speaker of the House. And the mayor was a nice lady named of all things, "Patience Ladding". One of the first female mayors I believe.

I remember S&H Green Stamps. I remember looking through the catalogs at the stuff you could get.
In the early 70s I remember watching a local kid's show where they would read viewer mail, and they once received a letter that had been mailed with an S&H Green Stamp.

Then there was their competitor, Blue Chip stamps.
Some supermarket chains carried the S&H, others carried the Blue Chips.

My mother would buy gas only at stations that offered Blue Chip stamps... even if it meant spending 32 cents a gallon instead of 28.

I remember very well, in my day, we used them to get Boy Scout supplies, and if there were money left over, we might get a gimmick. Th ebest was a compass that you would strap to your wrist and walk away, good luck. Thanks for bringing that back. My how times have changed, those kids today don't know shit.

Yep, my mom used them to supplement her farm wife economy to buy some birthday gifts for her kids.
The reason I got a stapler for my 17th birthday.
I remember getting a couple cheesy things with them when I was maybe 18 years old after collecting the stamps for months.
They harken back to a time when there were coupons on cigarettes and you could save bubblegum wrappers and send them in for toys. This I did a couple times too and one thing I did get was a Bazooka Joe pocket knife.
The economic past of our country when you could collect bottles and get pocket change. Something brought back in the Reagan years.
Think about it.
In this age we even pay for water and maybe soon for oxygen.
Those who will survive will find the ways to keep themselves supplied as good consumers.
They won't let themselves become so dependent on something to survive.
Something like fuel to get to work to earn the credits to survive.
Which gets me back to the stamps.
Yep, we used to get stamps even when we bought gas. And the guy who pumped it cleaned our windshield.
Sometimes we got free fill ups of coffee too.
Oh those were good times.
Though we didn't have Ipods to enjoy.

Oh god, yeah, I remember these. As a matter of fact, last week I was going through a box of stuff I got from my folks after they died, and there were nearly 10 books of green stamps that they never got around to redeeming. I also have about 50 sheets of stamps that need to be glued into a book, if anyone is interested in reliving their childhood memories.

They did have a distinct taste, did they not?
We were upset because we found a boat load of unspent books long after the S&H greenstamps were a thing of the past!

The Kroger store where we shopped gave away Top Value Stamps. The Texaco station my great-uncle owned also gave the TV Stamps so we had two sources for them. We had to drive 30 miles to redeem them and back in those days that was a good distance (we lived in the boonies, lol)
I also had the job of putting the stamps in the books and used a sponge to moisten them instead of licking all those stamps. That glue was some nasty stuff.
I also remember my grandmother guarding those books like they were gold. She actually hid them in the house, lol
Ahhhh the good ol' days!

Yeah, my mom would save Green Stamps forever...kept the books in a special drawer in the kitchen...nothing else in it.
We also got Gold Bond stamps but they never seemed to add up to anything useful.
