I really can't stand to watch most of it. It just seems like... There's a confusion in them on what they want to achieve.

Johns: Gay hustler meets other Gay hustler, sort of fall in love, one of them dies in the end.

Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss: Older guy falls for younger male model, goes through realization you're not going to always get what you want and you have to live your life.

I only saw part of Trick before I turned it off.

I haven't seen, but hopefully these are good:

Brokeback Mountain
But, I'm a Cheerleader
Transamerica
Another Gay Movie
Anything by Colt... Oh wait, scratch that off. I don't think they're going for art there. tongue.gif

I haven't seen, but hopefully these are good:

Brokeback Mountain - Good from a dramatic point of view but it's not exactly what I would consider a gay film, it's more of a digestible version for mainstream America (since it doesn't actually explore the gay culture in any way aside from the fact that two men fall in love).
But, I'm a Cheerleader - Funny, over the top, ridiculous. If you're looking for something that's so absurd that you want to laugh, this would be alright.
Transamerica - I wouldn't categorize this so much as a gay film but it does fall into the GLBT category. It's a good movie, I own it and I've watched it a few times.
Another Gay Movie - Absolutely hilarious. Watch it, even if you hate it, it's great for a few laughs unless you're really opposed to raunchy humor.
Anything by Colt... Oh wait, scratch that off. I don't think they're going for art there. tongue.gif

There are few that I strongly recommend:

Broken Hearts Club - A look at 20-30 something gay men and relationships in Hollywood. Great cast and acting, great screenplay.
Latter Days - A look at the difficulties facing a young Mormon man. It's cute, warmhearted but serious too.
Beautiful Thing - A coming of age film focused on love between two teenage boys in London. Received many awards, it's a great movie.
Get Real - A coming of age film focused on coming out and the difficulties keeping a relationship secret when your lover isn't exactly wanting to come out. Again received many awards and is an excellent film.

There are many more, these are just a few I mention off the top of my head.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'm just trying to find a good one that doesn't seem so... badly done.

I don't mind over the top, because they can be fun movies in general(like Scary Movie and such.)

Then I'd definitely check out those four I mentioned. Broken Hearts Club can be a little over the top at times but it's an accurate portrayal because we can be over the top at times.

Another Gay Movie is right up your alley if you're looking for over the top. It's very much like Scary Movie or that Not Another Teenage Movie or whatever it was called, it's a spoof of those with a very gay twist.

There's a dirty secret in the gay community: our movies are all pretty much terrible, but we'll watch them anyway.

Here are a few diamonds in the rough:

Jeffrey
Kiss me Guido
Big Eden

But I'm a Cheerleader is pretty damned funny.

There's this one movie that's a spoof on American Pie, but I can't remember what it's called. It's pretty funny. Maybe that's "Another Gay Movie." I can't remember.

Beautiful Thing is wonderful.

To Wong Foo is pretty funny.

There's always The Birdcage.

Brokeback Mountain will rip you to shreds.

Trembling before God is a pretty interesting documentary about gay Orthodox Jews.

And of course there's the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Can't beat Tim Curry as a butch alien drag queen. tongue.gif

What about The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?

I don't know why I expected not to like that one. It was great though. I'd watch it again.

In a totally different vein I liked Mysterious Skin (Gregg Araki)

Never really gotten into Van Sant. He kinda creeps me out. But, "Milk" which I think might not be in general release yet, is supposed to be good.

That's probably the one you're thinking of. I saw it in the theater and bought the DVD but I have to admit I haven't watched it in a year or more.

I liked it, it was slightly disturbing...but of course in a way that's what made it good.

Gregg Araki is a disturbed man. I've seen Nowhere, The Doom Generation, and The Living End. All very daaaark movies.

Same with old gay novels from the 70s-80s.

I once did a research project for one of my English profs in undergrad, who was looking into the phenomenon. It was me and 2 other guys.

All 4 of us were like...ok we see the point of what they were doing, but......DANG this is some crappy writing!
Hannibal
As Good as It Gets

Thelma and Louise

Top Gun (don't deny it)

I think it's because it's hard to get past the "I'm gay" part of being gay. I still find it hard to get past that since just about everyone I meet eventually finds out, asks and I'm usually honest.

I LOVED "Big Eden"!!!!! It felt like Northern Exposure in a way....beautiful, rustic scenery and lovable but quirky townsfolk. The music was classic and fabulous, the acting was pretty solid and Eric Schwieg is one beautiful man!

My Beautiful Laundrette is really cute.

There's also The Wedding Banquet - I believe that's an Ang Lee film, and I remember it being very good.

Yeah it's one of my favorite "family" films.

Maybe it's just me, but I was bored to TEARS by that movie. I watched it when I was really young though - I might give it another chance.

Come on, folks! am I the ONLY 10 year old who sees the pun in this subject line and giggles every time?! 17 posts over a week or so and not one immature snicker?!

Geez, you people disappoint!

But "Die Mommie Die" never does. It ran just last week. And, because I tend to be a sap for jokey romances with TV dialogue AND locations I know very well, there's the formulaic "Broken Hearts Club."

Actually, that last may only confirm the subject line complaint, not refute it.

I politely ignored my natural instincts so say anything smile.gif

I have never seen Die Mommie Die but I've heard it's good. I have looked for it at the video stores but I haven't found it. I may have to buy it online.

It ran on something like the Independent Film Channel or something similar in the last 2 weeks or so - one of those mid-level cable channels that does not include commercials during films. I've seen it pop up in the past and never watched it before - I'd see that Jason Priestly credit and keep scanning. But this time I actually read the log line and decided to give it a shot. Hilarious, and surreal.

Oh, "But I'm a Cheerleader!" Forgot all about that one!

I saw I've Heard the Mermaids Singing about 20 years ago. I remember enjoying it immensely.

There's another Canadian lesbian film I only caught part of on tv a few months ago, Better Than Chocolate, but from what I saw of it it was really good.

I thought about it but because the OP mentioned movies that tend to suck I kind of stayed away from that one. It's great but it is definitely bad.

I love IFC and Sundance.

I honestly thought I was going to hate Brokeback Mountain. It sounded so bleak. But I found it to be genuinely sweet and moving. I won't spoil the ending, but it slayed me. Loved it, but don't think I can watch it again.

Saw a fun one recently - Kinky Boots. Loved it.

I won't spoil it for anyone either.

I was told that they ended up together in the end. A friend of mine told me that I guess because other people had been talking about it so much that he wanted me to think he ruined it for me. Wow, when I saw the movie I was completely stunned.
