I have one dog. She is a Pit Bull/Rottweiler mix. Her name is Babi.

Any pics?

Hmmm I wonder about that too. Or else it's a fear mechanism because a disabled dog wouldn't be able to defend herself ..so she seeks an escape.
I've decided if I don't hear back from Eddie's wheels, I'll try my damndest to get the money together to purchase a wheelchair for this little girl. I want her life to be dignified and happy.

Well, I sure hope you hear from them. If you think it would help for me to email them too, let me know.

this is my boy ~ he's a momma's boy. when i got him from the spca he was in a huge cage all by himself because he had some type of infection in his paw. when he saw me he went all apeshit, ripping around the cage. i had no choice as he kinda picked me. best birthday present ever, thank you sis. oh yeah ~ his name started as jag but he loves the j and g sounds and quickly became jiggyjag, mostly now he's just jiggy (i know but he named himself really smile.gif)

after about 6 months of just him and me ~ this little one was put up onto my balcony. starving, dehydrated and obviously abused. most people never see her as she doesn't like people much (she slinks away and hides the second anyone else enters my place) i named her mia as in missing in action. i really didn't want 2 cats but if a cat ever needed a stable home because she was frighten and paranoid, mia was it. turned out to be a perfect fit. jiggy loves and protects her and it took a while but she loves and trusts me.

Awwwww . . . their beautiful Lucy. My younger, female cat is very skiddish too. It's weird, cause I've had both of them since about 6 wks. While the older one, Simba, will run up to people who come to the door like a friendly dog, Winnie only will come to me and my 17 yo son, and only when we're alone and everything's quiet. Even then, she won't lay on our laps or anything, never has. She's a strange one, since I've had her forever, I know nothing happened to her.

There! I found the pics of my cats, lousy as they are. I need to take some better ones.

This is Winnie, the younger skiddish one:

This is Simba, my old fellow (16 yo):

I know...400 bucks for one! But thank you so much for the handle tip...I definitely need those!
Oh boy do I relate when it comes to heavy dogs...my lab Trixie was 135lbs. and dropped to about 110 with the thyroid cancer. She couldn't stand up at all. I had to go to the chiropractor after she passed because I already have what's called a military neck. There's no curve..it's straight as an arrow, so I was using the muscles on each side of my neck and shoulders...my poor neck ached all the time.

Wow! I had no idea it was that expensive! I didn't even look at it since Damien was gone already or I'd never have even mentioned it. That's way too much money, especially since you are clever enough to make your own. cool.gif Good on you!

OK people, ya'll brought the big tough cowboy to tears with your thoughtfullness, thanks alot, I guess I needed a small tear factory!!! I thought of a way to build a wheelchair. A piece of 1/2" plywood cut to a 16"x16" square, go to a hardware store and buy some casters, or small wheels. Here we have Farm and Fleet, they had them. Anyway, attach them to the board, and then attach the doggy padding to the top of the bed. I would bet that you could make legs as high as needed out of 2x4's attach to the board first, then attach the wheels to the 2x4's. That way she 'walks' at her normal height, like when they sit with their butts on a couch, and front legs on the ground. HINT- When attaching the 2x4's, use two 2'' screws for each. I bet this would work, and wouldn't cost more than 20 bucks. I hope it helps, and thanks for telling us your stories, good for the soul, like chicken soup!!!

OK, dog people! HERE's one for you. Has ANYONE out there come upon a currently available, retail market vacuum cleaner that REALLY picks up vast quantities of pet hair from carpeting?

This is a VERY bad time of year around our house with four dogs and two cats. And while we brush the animals like mad, we nonetheless end up with a second layer of nap atop the carpeting, and it's already carpeting selected to help conceal the dog hair - so it takes an ENORMOUS amount to be visible.

We've experiment with a number of different upright and canister machines, including those that claim to beat, brush and suck the pile to within an inch if its life, and we seem to do little better than getting MAYBE 40% of the hair up in the best circumstances.

We've found we can go over a single small section of carpeting MANY, MANY times with different machines, and instantly after shutting it off find that there still remains far more than enough to spoil the clothes of anyone foolish enough to sit there - they still get up looking like a Yeti. And heaven forbid you try rolling a stick lint brush over it - IMMEDIATELY after absurd amounts of vacuuming in one area the brush comes up with no sticky surface left unhaired. (Yes, I invented that word.)

I'd kind of worry about the weight of something like this.

Perhaps REFUGE51 could post some dimensions, stats on the dog and we can bang something together here. Find yourself a basic b/w outline drawing of a dog and provide the measurements re: belly to floor, back to floor, back width, distance between back legs and front legs, and the like, and it might be easier to whip up a plan that uses some commonly available supplies, and perhaps even take a shot at putting one together. I'd be glad to give it a shot, and others here would, too, I suspect.

Tried that, and the hair on the dogs still worked its way out of the tape and onto the carpet. Plus, the dogs looked really ridiculous covered with tape, and they didn't seem to like it much, either.

Now here's an all-natural anti-flea remedy for those of you in California. I learned many years ago that Eucalyptis branches and nuts are a natural flea repellent due to the iodine in the Eucalyptis. So I would always put fresh branches under the couch cushions and under the pet's bedding. Plus I always liked the smell.

Oh, and bushwa, get a Dyson. I have one and it's great.

That works on clothing, furniture and smaller items, but its a lot of work to do to get fur off carpeting. Hard on the knees too.

I like wood and tile floors and a shop vac myself! cool.gif

I'm down to two cats... Cleo and Hobbes (brother and sister) and both aged 15 yrs. I have to cast my vote for the Dyson vacuum cleaner as well. Get the pet model. I got mine about 4 years ago and wouldn't trade it for the world. It's pricey, but worth it when you don't have to get down on your hands and knees and pick fur out of the carpet. Comes with a gazillion different great attachments, too. I love one attachment that I use for spider webs.

Shelter animals have so much to offer
By: Monica Kessler

It never ceases to amaze me how so many people can toss their dogs out like yesterday’s trash, or leave a loyal companion in a shelter feeling terrified, stressed and confused. Dogs are not just dogs to me. For some people, when it comes down to moving or a baby coming, or after a dog chewed things up, the dog will end up in the shelter where it will most likely die!

Most pet owners who dump dogs at the shelter say it is very friendly and loving dog, so it will be adopted. If only they knew how many people said the same thing. I got tired of seeing so many dogs die that I started going to the shelter and taking the dog most unlikely to be adopted to get it groomed and find it a home. I ended up starting a small dog rescue Web site, www.safeydogrescue.com, and taking in puppies that need homes and placing them in forever homes. I rescued my little Dolly Blu from the shelter when she was dropped off after having a litter of pups. Her previous owners kept the pups, but dumped her off, still full of milk and so scared. I took her in, intending to find her a forever home, but from the moment she came into my house, I knew she was mine for good.

Dolly Blu is the best companion anyone could ever ask for. She is now my service dog and soon will be going to hospices to spread some joy and make people smile. Every time people see her, they ask me how much I paid for her. When I tell them I got her from the shelter, they are shocked! So many people think you can go only to a breeder for a purebred. But that is the farthest from the truth. So many purebreds end up in the shelters, and there just aren’t enough homes for all of them.

Rescue groups do what they can, but with high expenses, our hands are tied when it comes to saving more. I have had to learn that you can’t save them all; one by one is all we can do. Shelters are full of wonderful, loyal dogs that will be so grateful to you. If you are thinking of getting a dog, don’t buy one from a pet store — they come from puppy mills. Don’t go to a breeder to line their pockets — go to a shelter.

Visit: www.petfinder.com to see the many adoptable dogs around Bakersfield. If you can’t adopt, then help shelters or rescues with donations or with items animals can use.

Last year we had to buy a new vacuum, we looked at the dyson and I went online to a get this, Vacuum cleaner message board!!! The hands down winner was a Sears Kenmore PROGRESSIVE w/ direct drive. So we got one and it is awesome, we have 6 dogs, 4 cats, and 2 baby goats who come in when the weather starts up, and carpet throughout the house, no choice, it was here when we bought the house. BUT, this thing is one badass vac!!! It has lights that blink green when the carpet is clean.

But the cat and four labs make up for that big time! biggrin.gif

No it is not loud, it was a great surprise. The guy at Sears even tried to talk us out of it and into a Dyson. Of course he was about 19 years old and didn't know shit. This thing sucks up crumbs from 10 years ago. It has a rotary hand vac, like a small Red Devil. I wish I could remember the board I went to, but it was unanimous. I never even heard of it, and if you open a Sears card, it's even cheaper, at least here (IL). Well worth it and less money than a dyson.

How's the chair coming along?

I received the estimate today and should know something by tomorrow. I'm so excited about getting Sassy a chair. The estimate was low except there's shipping and handling but still..lower than other places I've looked. So I hope it won't be too difficult to get sassy funded. If so, the man will send out the wheelchair within two days. My niece is faxing my documents and the estimate to IMOM tonight.

Poor Sassy, her little butt is getting red and so I put vaseline on it. But then tonight I put some cornstarch. It's difficult to feel when you have to poop if you can't even stand up! Stop worrying and just relax. It will work out the way its supposed to work out. You've done what you needed to do for Sassy. I'm sure the chair will take pooping into consideration (meaning there will be a hole she can poop and pee through in the chair. I'm also sure it will fit.

I wish I had an idea what would help her poor chapped butt but it sounds like you are doing everything possible for her. I am thrilled you found this chair for her! She's a lucky dog to have found you!

Yeah, don't worry so Ref. You're doing everything anyone could do, and more than most would. It'll work out - it HAS to.

I decided not to get those two boxers. I feel terrible, but my older cat Simba is still having problems. I had to go pick up a bunch of prescription food, cause he won't eat anything else right now. I don't know what's going on. All his tests are normal, but he is 15 years old. I just couldn't put so much focus on new pets right now when Simba seems to be in decline and the expense is getting out of hand - you know how that goes. Oddly enough, he's been like a little leach too, lol. He's been stuck to me like glue and very affectionate. I think this is partially him missing Lola. I've never thought animals view time like we do, and both cats have been acting a bit out of character in the last week. I think they're realizing Lola's gone and adjusting.

And of course, I'm obsessed with the Favre thing, as you'd expect. wink.gif

Thanks ladies:)

Rottmom, I know she'll be able to pee and poop in the chair, I guess I'm just getting anxious because she's so old and getting a little depressed. Can't wait to find out if they'll approve her today. I have a great feeling they will, but see I know there are other dogs in need of surgery to make their lives full, so I would never want to take funds when they could get better. Of course they'll get the funds first, I just feel guilty asking.

Teri, I understand completely!! You have got to take care of your sweet kitty first and foremost.
