Apparently the residents if the Greek island of Lesbos are fed up with gay women around the world calling themselves Lesbians. Gee one would think they'd be proud of the island's nakesake and all that free advertising, not nah...it's a problem for the women of Lesbos who are not gay...they don't want to be called Lesbians anymore.

A group of plaintiffs from the Greek island of Lesbos (pictured below) begins their quest in court today to stop gay women from calling themselves lesbians.

Gee whiz...

WoW wouldn't it be great of we dropped all the sticky gender preference labels?
CowboySteve
Or those silly Greek Island identifiers - Do the people from Samos call themselves Samoans? Or sue the pants of the other samoans? Do the people from Crete hate the Republicans for stealing the term Cretin? Shameful, shameful, shameful.
Llydis
I really don't see who they could sue in order of Lebians to stop calling themselves Lesbians.

The name has pretty much been surrendered by this point.

Can I just say that I am an angry lesbian? But not in the way my Greek sisters are?

Have long suspected this, Dan. biggrin.gif

Anyway, I must segue now: They are offering free sex-changes in Cuba now! Turns out Raul's daughter has been leading this valiant effort.

HEALTH-CUBA: Free Sex Change Operations Approved
By Dalia Acosta

HAVANA, Jun 6 (IPS) - New horizons opened up for transsexuals in Cuba with the approval of a Public Health Ministry resolution that establishes guidelines for their health care, including free gender reassignment operations.

"It was just approved. The operations will begin to be carried out as soon as the Cuban medical team is ready to start," Mariela Castro, head of the National Centre for Sex Education (CENESEX), told IPS.

Since 2004, Castro, President Raúl Castro’s daughter, has been the driving force in the effort to achieve integral health care for transsexuals in Cuba.

With the support of international experts, a team of Cuban specialists has been preparing for months to carry out sex change surgery, said Castro, who added that the operations may begin this year.

Only one sex reassignment operation has ever been carried out in Cuba, in 1988.
Resolution 126, which was signed Jun. 4 by Public Health Minister José Ramón Balaguer, establishes the creation of a centre that will provide integral health care for transsexuals. It will be the only institution in Cuba authorised to carry out gender reassignment therapy.

The decision also "legitimates the work of the National Commission for Integral Care of Transsexual People," created by CENESEX in 2005 as the continuation of a multidisciplinary team that has functioned since 1979, said Castro.

"This resolution establishes all of the aspects of care for transsexuals, including the operation for those who qualify and are interested, because not all transsexuals want the surgery," said the sexologist.

Why would they call themselves Lesbians anyway? It would make sense if the country were spelled Lesbi or Lesbia. They should be Lesbons. Why leave out a letter in the country's name? ...and if you just have to add letters before the s when making it plural, how about the more obvious Lesboians.

A brief Google search suggested that Lesbotian is also used. but I couldn't determine if it is a term they endear themselves.

The word lesbian is derived from the poems of Sappho, born in Lesbos, which contain powerful emotional content directed toward other females and have frequently been interpreted as expressing homosexual love. Because of this association, Lesbos and especially the town of Eresos, her birthplace, are visited frequently by lesbian tourists.

Coz they iz. Sappho the poet lived on the Island of Lesbos. It was a common place to banish Athenian women who wore plaid shirts.

Hence, the term Lesbians was accepted. In French, it's les Biéns. In Belgium, it's LesBonBons.

Wuddever shifts yer Kenworth.
