I am devastated.....I've always loved him....I always thought he was the fairest person of all!

I agree. I'm really in shock. Tim always held his guests feet to the fire by their own words. I loved it when he'd play someone's own words and then ask them to explain what they said, and why we should believe something different than what's on tape. No media spin, no I heard you said, etc. He will REALLY be missed in this election cycle. America is a poorer place with his passing.

Personally, I'm grateful that even those who have railed about Russert's shortcomings (I've been there, too) on this occasion are also able to give him the credit he deserves.

On top of that, 58. I promise you I'm not the only one here who sees THAT relatively low number and is rocked a bit.

Just a damned shame.

I'm totally shocked.
RIP Tim Russert, thanks for the good times and the bad times.
I liked you, you were the real deal.

A true journalism till the end. He will be greatly missed. Sunday will never, ever be the same.

I happened to catch Tim Russert talking live by phone to the news jockeys at WTOP, the biggest news radio station here in the DC region, this morning.

He made a really good point about the Obama campaign and the disinformation going around...he said that someone had approached him and told him he didn't like Rev. Wright's comments, but when asked for an example, they guy couldn't come up with anything. Then he said the guy says he also doesn't trust Obama because he's a muslim, at which point Russert gently pointed out that you can't have both...Rev. Wright is a christian minister. So which is it?

Here's the audio. Definitely worth a listen - and worth spreading - even if Russert hadn't just passed on.

Well, Russert, at the top of MSNBC as Washington Bureau Chief, was definitely not cooperating with the r-wing Cheney/Busch smear machine.

Pretty damn depressing. Massive heart attack and you're gone.

My lasting image of Russert will always be how he worked that wipe board during the Bush- Gore 2000 election night returns... I could not believe NBC could not afford anything better than a dime store wipe off board but now that I think about it... it was so simple and pure.. before we knew what was about to hit our nation... The Bush Crime Family Era...

Hope you enjoyed your ride, Tim. {}

I just posted some audio of an interview he did this morning on the same topic he discussed on his posting.

My wife just asked me if that means I won't be shouting at the TV on Sunday mornings anymore!!! He used to get to me by not asking the tougher questions. I can still yell at George S.

same here.

this kind of stuff really got me going:

During this week's Democratic presidential debate, Russert didn't ask a single question about global warming, continuing his longstanding habit of all but ignoring the topic. He didn't ask a single question about the mortgage crisis. (As one Cleveland resident noted, "We've got the mortgage industry's toxic waste scattered all over this city, but Mr. Blue-Collar-Buffalo-and-Cleveland-Marshall-Guy Russert couldn't be bothered with a question about it.") He didn't ask a single question about executive power, the Constitution, torture, wiretapping, or other civil-liberties concerns. But that shouldn't come as a surprise; of all the questions he has asked while moderating presidential debates during this campaign, only one has dealt with any of those topics.

He has, however, asked Dennis Kucinich what he felt compelled to insist was a "serious question" -- whether Kucinich has seen a UFO. And he has asked about John Edwards' expensive haircut.

I think he realized during Plamegate that they were going to try to use him as a tool, and he wasn't buying it. In fact I think he was pissed at them for even thinking that.

This makes me even sadder. He was so on the warpath - fighting the viral stuff on internet.

Russert:
QUOTE
I remember being in Indianapolis covering the Indiana primary and a man came up to me and said he wasn’t going to vote for Senator Obama because he was very concerned about the comments made by Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s pastor. I said, “That’s interesting. As a reporter, I’m curious what comments particularly bothered you?” He said, “Well, I can’t think of any that come to mind, but I also read on the Internet that he’s a Muslim.” And I said, “Now wait a minute. You can’t have both. You can’t be offended by his Christian minister and then say he’s a Muslim. You’ve got to pick one.”

But that just underscores what we’re dealing with in this modern era.

Now I’m told there’s a counter organization with a very similar name that is going to be positioned and posted to spread the rumors, so that people that go to the Internet to get clarification will go to the wrong web site and get confused.

Biden will once again cream (close that door, will ya?) tongue.gif Lindsey, IF they play that show as planned. I highly doubt it NOW.

I got a little news flash for you. This board is comprised mostly of progressives who vote Democratic. What does this mean? Most of the people on here will vote for Barack Obama.

I can't call you a Republican because it's against the rules but it's mostly Republicans who refer to him by including his middle name wink.gif

I bet his heart broke when he realized what's really going on in this country with respect to the deregulation of energy. While many of us were disappointed when he'd drop the ball with respect to asking his guests the hard questions. On the whole, he did a really good job and I found his show, Meet the Press, to be very enjoyable.

My condolences to his family.

I suppose that the random ordered universe or the orderly random universe has struck again on another Friday 13th. Although, I bet some will say Russert should have been watching his diet or taken more time off the air to rest. It is a stressful time in America and throughout the world is it not ? We can't all be as blessed as POTUS to take as much leisure time as we like sightseeing around the world in a time of two limited incursions, a failing economy through gasolene prices and a continuing subprime meltdown leading to record foreclosures. It's good to be the King ain't it ?

It's ashame Russert ended his professional career in the days when "gotcha" moments are all the rage of political coverage. I will remember him through his moderation of a presidential debate only to be satirized (and maybe santitized) by SNL. Generally, since the neocons considered dissenters as traitors and fair game real journalism went downhill in my book. And all important ratings with a threat of law suits for being professional sort of took alot of quality out of Russert's craft to me. All the while the King's censors were finely in tune with the media picking out those who were not sticking to the story.

Lightning strikes are a funny thing. You or I don't think about it too much unless you happen to be a middle aged male golfer frequenting golf courses in Florida. The most likely place to be killed by a lightning strike is on a golf course so the highest incidence of death by lightning strike is among middle aged male golfers, imagine that. Otherwise, lightning strikes are pretty random but not in an orderly random universe or a randomly ordered universe. Globally scientists now track lightning strikes in realtime each day. I bet after one hundred years or so of data collected on an hourly basis of lightning strikes, science may be able to predict exact locations of a lightning strike. It don't matter to me cause I don't golf.

God Bless lil Timmy, I hope St. Peter don't have any gotcha moments in store for him at the Pearley Gates.

Almost as telling as when an alleged Democrat refers to his party as the "Democrat Party" and wonders why no one believes them.

Tim Russert was an unusual journalist, one who could be seen as a frustratingly compliant stooge of the corporatists and corrupt Bush administration, then suprisingly have a moment of clear and cogent statement of problem with the same.

When he was the prime witness in the Libby-Plame leak cause he was sweating bullets.

Perhaps with Scott McClellan's book out the idea that some who know things might recover their conscience and become "inconvenient" may be why another "sudden heart attack" has taken someone close to things.

If you were a member of such a group, I would not think it too much a tinfoil hat thought to be concerned about being found dead in a hotel room - an apparent suiside, or crash in a small airplane, or die suddenly of "natural causes."

If you can't shut them up with a pardon or a plum job, take them out.

I like this kind of thinking.

This is how reality works.

Russert is tied to Plamegate...and McClellan is talking.

I saw CHENEY'S MAFIA CRIME FAMILY whack people out...before they became possible future witnesses.

Poisen to induce a heart attack....can be done with carari...and other ways.

Brit Hume's son....was working on a story about capital corruption, and...as he met a witness somehow his car went out of control...and ran into a tree.

Carnaby got whacked in Houston...and the videot on youtube makes it look like a street execution by HoustonPD.

I think Snotty Scotty...is on the hit parade....but with House Jud Comm subpoenaing him, YOU CANNOT WHACK HIM OUT NOW...right?

Ghigliotti was a FLIR video specialist who said he had evidence that three FBI agents perjured themselves in the Waco Hearings. Ghigliotti ended up dying of a heart attack....seven days after his call to his friend. The wiretapping is done with computers now....showing illegal surveillance leading to the murderers.

That's something...fBI knows about...and keeps from the people who gave them their faith, money, and trust.

We have been stabbed in the back...........by the right wing GOP scum..........many of whom, have badges or uniforms.

Just got home and heard the sad news. What a terrible loss for his family and friends, for NBC and for America - I had great respect for Tim Russert. Tim Russert....
What can be said ... Tim was a unique and highly respected journalist. He was NEVER afraid to ask and demand answers for tough questions (albeit tactfully and with grace). He would always call people on what they had said previously, especially politicians (on every side). Oh how he will be missed. dry.gif dry.gif

WHO WILL STEP INTO THAT POSITION? Nobody will ever replace him (in any aspect) but who will ask and demand answers for us in the future? Keith Olberman? David Gregory? What a void dry.gif ...a void in all our lives.

This is a VERY SAD day for us all !!! dry.gif An Irish Catholic, South Buffalo born and raised, accomplished journalist, WONDERFUL Husband, Father, Friend and Co-Worker. Canisius College educated. I too was born and raised in South Buffalo, NY. We are all soooooo very saddened by Tim's passing. We can only hope that he left us quickly and did not suffer in his last moments. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tim and his friends and family.

In Time of Sorrow...

May you see God's light on the path ahead
When the road you walk is dark.
May you always hear,
Even in your hour of sorrow,
The gentle singing of the lark.
When times are hard may hardness
Never turn your heart to stone,
May you always remember
when the shadows fall—
You do not walk alone.

BO BILLS !!!

"Tim's passing is a loss not only to his family and many friends, it is a loss to good journalism and to our country.
Tim, first and foremost, was devout in his faith and deeply devoted to his family. He loved his country with a passion and became a classic example of the ideal American journalist.

Tim had become an important part of our political process. He will be especially missed in this historic presidential election year.

Tim Russert was a beacon of quality journalism

At a time when quality journalism is in increasingly short supply, Tim Russert was a leader for what is best in American journalism. He was tough but fair, pulled no punches, played no favorites.
