What i don't get is why are we so surprised and shocked and dismayed when religious people take literally what is written in their holy books and proceed to act on it.

stupid people will do stupid things no matter the cause. evil could be plugged in for stupid.

Do you think that the people who killed the "witches" are evil? Or stupid? I don't. I think that they are simply sadly misguided by a text that they see, as so many others do, as being the literal word of God. Religion, whether supernatural (Christianity) or materialist (Communism) has a remarkable ability to make good people do bad things
