Whose not unified ??? 13 June, 2008
You know, we haven’t held back here at 3BlueDudes.com on bashing the awful media coverage of the Democratic Primary. Polls released over the past two weeks have pretty much debunked the media over-hypes and myths they tried to sell regarding Obama’s inability to capture or gain ‘women”, “blue collar” hispanic”, and “catholic” voters. What the media failed to realize is that Hillary Clinton in her own regard is a popular Democrat and many voted for her based on her record and her husband’s. It had nothing to do with Barack Obama the person or the candidate. Polls are proving it. Voters are coming home. If anything, the media played a spins story to sell advertising by keeping a Primary alive that was effectively over after Texas and Ohio, if not sooner.
Well a new poll debunks yet another media MYTH. For months we have been hearing about how the extended primary was hurting democratic party unity and that Obama would struggle to unify a polarized democratic base. Obama’s biggest weakness will be Democrats flocking to John McBush McCain. Despite a toxic environment for Republicans, Obama will be weakened by a split party. Isn’t that what we were sold night in and night out, morning in and morning out? Isn’t that what we pushed to believe?
The recently released Diageo-The Hotline poll de-mythifies (not even a word, but it fits!) those mis-perceptions. Wanna talk about party unity? Let’;s look at the hard stats. Republicans and Democrats were both asked whether they were satisfied with their party nominee. Here are the results …
John McBush McCain - 52% satisfied, 45% Preferred someone else
Barack Obama - 68% satisfied, 30% preferred someone else
Ummm, those are pretty big differences. Nearly HALF of GOP voters preferred someone else and not John McCain. Yet, almost 70% of DEMS are satisfied with Obama.
So to MSNBC, CNN, CBS, ABC and the rest — which party is NOT unified? Which party is not enthusiastic about their nominee? Another media myth — Debunked!
Let’s take a look at some of the other tidbits in the poll that stood out.
Nation is on the Wrong Track — 81% of independents and 89% of DEMS believe the nation is on the wrong track. Even 57% of GOP voters feel that way.
Surprising non-issue — when asked what is the most important problem facing the nation, immigration only elicited 3% of GOP voters and 1% of both DEMS and INDEPs. In fact, terrorism only garnered 6% from GOP voters while only 1% from DEMS and INDEPs. Two top issues — Gas Prices and the Economy.
Favorable Ratings — Independent voters clearly align with Democrats. When asked on President George W. Bush’s favorability, 90% of DEMS rated Bush unfavorable whole 70% of INDEPs found him unfavorable. Total numbers not split by party — For John McCain 52% find him favorable while 37% find him unfavorable. 57% of voters found Barack Obama favorable while 33% found him unfavorable.
Interesting Clinton numbers — So you think Hillary Clinton really is a draw as Veep. Not so fast. When asked if you were more likely to vote for Obama if Clinton was on the ticket, here are the results … More Likely to vote for Obama 11%, Less Likely 12%, No Difference a whopping 74%. Kind of deflates that entire argument.
Here is how they fared on issues of who would do a better job …
Health Care: Mccain (38%) - Obama (44%)
Economy: McCain (37%) - Obama (43%)
Iraq: McCain (49%) - Obama (41%)
Who will bring change: McCain (32%) - Obama (49%)
