Radio talk show host calls for murder of anti-war activist
By Nick Langewis | Uncategorized | Sunday, 15 June 2008

Michael Reagan, radio talk show host and son of late president Ronald Reagan, could be investigated by the FBI after he called for the execution of Mark Dice, anti-war activist and founder of media watchdog group The Resistance, on the air.

On the June 10th edition of his nationally syndicated Radio America show, Reagan called Dice and others in the “9/11 Truth” movement “traitors” after learning that they were sending letters, declassified documents and DVDs to troops in Iraq that they say point to government involvement in the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001.

The effort is part of The Resistance’s “Operation Inform the Soldiers.”

“I don’t want the soldiers who are risking their lives in Iraq to be used as pawns in the creation of the New World Order,” Dice said in a recent press release. “I personally know U.S. Marines who believe 9/11 was an inside job, and they tell me that many Marines suspect that this is the case but are afraid to speak up out of fear of punishment.”

“We ought to find the people who are doing this,” Reagan said, “take ‘em out, and shoot ‘em. Really. Just find the people who are sending those letters…to demoralize our troops…they are traitors to this and shoot them. You have a problem with that? Deal with it. But anybody who would do that doesn’t deserve to live. You call them traitors–that’s what they are–and you shoot ‘em dead. I’ll pay for the bullet.”

“How about you take Mark Dice out,” Reagan continued, “and put him in the middle of the firing range? Tie him to a post, don’t blindfold him, and let it rip and have some fun with Mark Dice.....”

Yes, he should definitely be arrested and his show pulled.

Just an FYI, it's a misnomer to call The Resistance an anti-war group and leave it at that. They were in the news last week for trying to say Starbucks' new logo is slutty: "spread like a prostitute... The company might as well call themselves Slutbucks".

He'a something of an Alex Jones knockoff: lots of anti-government screeds and 9/11 inside jobber wingnuttia and the natrually-attendent Israel/Talmud/Judaism hate. He's also another of these far right post-tribbers, who believes hate crime laws oppress Christians. http://www.theresistancemanifesto.com/

But Reagan should have his broadcasting license revoked for this. Totally unacceptable.

I thought broadcasting licenses were no longer necessary under the Shrub regime.

Reagan should be pulled. The only way for that to happen is for a huge public outcry to occur and complain to the FCC. Unfortunately, I doubt anything will happen. So this asshole will continue to broadcast.

I'm surprised Reagan would take Bush's penis out of his mouth long enough to say anything.

He's inciting violence and should be investigated, at least. We shouldn't hold our breath.

Well, Reagan wouldn't have a license - the stations carrying his shows do. And while they are still necessary, it's really only references to vaginas, penises and breasts - and a few euphemisms for intercourse and defecation - that put the holders at risk of fines.

Falsehoods and threats are NOT concerns of the FCC, based upon their enforcement actions.

Sorry to correct you, Rhodie, but it is not Bush's penis in Michael Reagan's mouth, but that wrinkled, dessicated penis of his dead father to which he continues to apply the breath of life.

Will the FBI investigate this extremist, pathological nut job for inciting? Faux NEws needs the same done to them. Where will it stop? These people are so slimy. And they get their panties in a twist over Bush's terrorists. What a joke.
TapDuncan
They really should pull him off the air for that shit, but they won't until we get very vocal in our protests. Write the station an email, and their advertisers, that works pretty well most of the time. Unless their rw shitheads then they won't care.

It is sad to think that people would advocate murder. However, free speech is free speech. We have a choice not to listen.... we can always turn the dial.

You don't feel there is a line that should not be crossed?

What if the intended victims were Jews or blacks or women?

What if I had a radio show and said that I wanted your (mentioned by name) children murdered? That would be acceptable as free speech?

I think that when society start trying to tell people what is exceptable speech and what is not, then we no longer live in a free country. You open up a can a worms that you might not be able to close. One day, you are ok with given up your freedom, to use your example because someone says we should kill the women or blacks.... the next day, they tell you can't read agnostic literature, you can only read the bible. The bar gets raised higher and higher.... Words are not crimes. Actually going through with the thought, is when it becomes a crime.

What Reagan said was disgusting and terrible.... but it shouldn't be a crime to say it.

That different and you know it. Go ahead and start legislating speech.... before you know it, we will be living in a police state. Imagine the evangelicals reach their goal and take our government over.... Any thoughts that differ would land you in the re education camp faster than you can say jesus.

I respect your sensitivity to First Amendment rights, however the right to broadcast is not a First Amendment issue, it is a regulatory issue. The airwaves are public domain and expecting the agencies that regulate them to do their job as expected by the public is not an infringement of rights, it is democracy in action. Then Reagan can go and speak what he wants up and down the streets for all I care, but to use the airwaves to do so is something that it is absolutely proper to expect a consequence to. Opposing that is akin to suggesting drunk drivers who like to get hammered and play chicken with commuters on the wrong side of the highway should have the right to do so because the highways are public property and that's just how they like to drive. It ignores all the rules of use we as a society have put into place to ensure that a public asset is used in the public's best interests. Maybe the FCC does not get involved in this kind of violation, but maybe they should.

If Reagan wants to exercise his right to express his opinion let him get a blog like every other whackjob who likes to engage in hate speech. But even in a blog, inciting murder in a format which is broadcast nationally is still territory the Federal authorities should be expected to respond to. Had Reagan merely called for the man's trial and execution it would be reprehensible, but to call for the man to be killed in the way he suggests crosses the line from opining that the man be dealt with legally to inciting murder.

Freedom of speech is a wonderful institution, but it is hard to stay true in practice. I find myself getting offended and having that knee jerk reaction to censor. In the conversational setting, it is easy to be principled.

I am usually all about regulation to protect the public for abuse. However, I disagree with regulating thought, even if it is broadcast on public airways. This is one area where I think that the market can decide the fate of such broadcasters. I still think that people should use their voice to disagree, boycott and email your opinion to the network.... freedom of speech is a two way street. I just don't think government should ever regulate thought period.
Fellixe
Again I agree with your bigger picture, but regulating thought isn't what the situation calls for here. This:

QUOTE
“We ought to find the people who are doing this,” Reagan said, “take ‘em out, and shoot ‘em. Really. Just find the people who are sending those letters…to demoralize our troops…they are traitors to this and shoot them.

Isn't just a thought anymore when it escapes the confines of his head and is sent out to people who, particularly in the field of politics though not limited to it, tend to range from the very thoughtful to the mentally deficient who will act on whatever garbage they hear. Wording this thought the way he did is certainly not only an expression of his beliefs, but a call to action that may not be fully intentional but at the least is highly irresponsible. When he said this on air it evolved from thought to action, and actions are most definitely subject to consequences.

If you think Reagan's words in THIS instance were bad, SEE THIS LINK, and his calling for the murder of an anti-war activist will come off looking like MLK's "I have a dream" speech.

Michael Reagan

For reporting that is an embarrassment to the profession of journalism, and for being beholden to corporate paymasters rather than the citizens of America.

Sadly ironic that we just finished interviewing Rory O'Connor about his new book on right-wing radio hate mongers when we heard a murderous rant by Michael Reagan played and condemned on the Randi Rhodes show.

As we listened to the Reagan audio on Randi's program this week, we were reminded that all of this right-wing talk of killing, hate, and violence is being broadcast on the public airwaves and enriching the wealthy purveyors of on-air demagoguery. And remember, there are corporations who make a profit from these destructive words, as well as advertisers who support the degrading of the most basic of civilized standards.

We read that just recently Reagan said that an individual who was writing soldiers about his concerns about 9/11 should be shot:

"We ought to find the people who are doing this, take them out and shoot them. Really. You take them out, they are traitors to this country, and shoot them. You have a problem with that? Deal with it. You shoot them. You call them traitors, that's what they are, and you shoot them dead. I'll pay for the bullets. How about you take Mark Dice out and put him in the middle of a firing range. Tie him to a post, don't blindfold him, let it rip and have some fun with Mark Dice."

Then a YouTube posting of a Michael Reagan broadcast from a couple of years back finally got noticed for what it was: genocidal threats against Muslim babies and mothers, because some Middle Eastern mother named her child "Hezbollah."

"You know what I would get them for a first birthday, I would put a grenade up their butts and light it. Happy birthday. Bye-Bye." He went on to say, "What's wrong with killing the mothers and the babies?" It only gets more macabre and defiantly homicidal from there.

Since the radio program was simulcast on cable, you can see Reagan as he is spouting this S.S. diatribe -- and he is smirking for the cameras. These "shock jocks" -- radio storm troopers of the right -- know that outrageous comments get attention and publicity, and ultimately bigger checks for their bank accounts. But they and their radio company owners and their corporate sponsors are violating fundamental decency.

It is difficult and frustrating to try and fathom how we have arrived at this point in our society when the public airwaves are filled with such vile filth and violent calls for murder -- all so readily tolerated on the right-wing dial.

Michael Reagan is not just the BuzzFlash Media Putz of the Week. He is a contemptible human being who puts our nation's integrity and moral standards to shame.

I don't know whether or not this is common knowledge, but Michael Reagan is adopted - note that Ronald Reagan's biological children turned out fine - quite outstanding and on our side in fact. I don't mean to speak disparagingly of adoptees because I am one. But I shutter to think of what Michael Reagan was actually spawned from. When I was 24 years old I found my biological parents, and have spent time with them. So I know first hand that heredity is a significant factor in shaping who we are, right down to our core values - some of the similarities between me and my biological parents are uncanny.

NOTHING excuses that gasbag Reagan for what he said and for calling for people's death just because he disagrees with their POV. Nothing.

But I really wish people would stop casting Mark Dice as some kind of leftist "anti-war activist". He is an Alex Jones IJ/CT Christian moralist wannabe.

Mark Dice is a nutcase and not an ally - I mean, David Duke is also "anti-war", come on.

It is unfortunate that so many people abuse and hide behind "freedom of speech" to spread their garbage. Not everything is protected speech (slander, obscenities, hate speech, threats, etc). Sometimes, words can be as powerful as a gun.

Governments cannot really regulate thought. They cannot enter your head (yet). It would have been nice if Reagan kept his twisted thoughts in his little head. Unfortunately, his twisted thoughts were expressed into spoken words that were shared with listeners over the public airwaves.

I am strongly in favor of regulating broadcasters. Reagan must be pulled immediately.

1. It is sedition. The supreme court decision is clear in the illegal nature of this specific crime.

He should be arrested.
