Same-Sex Wedding March Begins In California

POSTED: 6:40 pm PDT June 15, 2008
UPDATED: 5:49 pm PDT June 16, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO -- Dozens of gay couples were married Monday after a historic ruling making California the second state to allow same-sex nuptials went into effect.

At least five county clerks around the state extended their hours to issue marriage licenses, and many same-sex couples got married on the spot.

"These are not folks who just met each other last week and said, 'Let's get married.' These are folks who have been together in some cases for decades," said Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. "They are married in their hearts and minds, but they have never been able to have that experience of community and common humanity."

The really big rush to the altar in the nation's most populous state was not expected to take place until Tuesday, which is when most counties planned to start issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of couples from around the country are expected to seize the opportunity to make their unions official in the eyes of the law.

Local officials are now required to issue licenses that have the words "Party A" and "Party B" where "bride" and "groom" used to be.

In San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom, who helped launch the series of lawsuits that led the court to strike down California's one-man-one-woman marriage laws, presided at the wedding of lesbian rights activists Del Martin, 87, and Phyllis Lyon, 84.

Well-wishers cheered when they emerged outside Newsom's office after the ceremony.

Dozens of couples gathered outside the clerks offices in Alameda, Sonoma and Yolo counties, where hours were extended to accommodate gay couples who wanted to be among the first to marry.

Derek Norman, 23 and Robert Blaudow, 39, from Memphis, were in the Bay Area for a conference and decided to get married at the Alameda County clerk's office.

"We might wait a long time in Tennessee, so this is our chance," Blaudow said.

First in line to pick up a marriage license in Sonoma was Melanie Phoenix, 47, and Terry Robinson, 48, of Santa Rosa. They have been together for almost 26 years and plan to be wed in August.

"It's an historic occassion," Phoenix said. "I never believed it was really possible until Gavin Newsom took the first step in 2004."

A throng of well-wishers and news media surrounded a lesbian couple as they were married in a Jewish ceremony in front of the Beverly Hills courthouse.

The ceremony was broadcast live on three newscasts in Los Angeles.

The couple wept and pressed their foreheads together, and onlookers whooped as the marriage became valid.

Earlier in the day, a conservative legal group asked a Sacramento court to order the California agency that oversees marriages to stop issuing gender-neutral marriage licenses.

Congratulations to all the couples who got married today especially Del and Phyllis.

Did Mr. Sulu (actor George Takei) tie the knot today? I know he was planning on marrying his longtime partner. I just was not sure if it was today.

It's so fantastic and I was so happy to see the elderly women who tied the knot after 50+ years of being just as committed in their love as a heterosexual couple so prominently mentioned on the news.

Hope so! That'd be sweet!

I know Ellen and Portia have ceremonies planned, much to Granpa McSame's consternation....

No, his wedding is slated for September:

WASHINGTON June 4, 2008, 07:24 pm ET · George Takei, best known for playing Sulu on "Star Trek," will never forget the first time he saw Brad Altman, the man he plans to marry, more than two decades ago.

They were working out in a running club and he couldn't take his eyes off Altman, who had a "lean, tightly muscled" body, the 71-year-old actor told AP Radio in an interview.

Takei said he asked Altman to help him train for a marathon, they fell in love, and now they've been living together for 21 years.

Altman said he proposed by getting down on one knee in their kitchen while Takei was eating a sandwich after seeing on TV that the California Supreme Court had legalized same-sex marriage. It surprised Takei, who thought he would be the one who popped the question.

They bought each other turquoise and silver wedding rings.

Takei and Altman plan to marry Sept. 14 in the Democracy Forum at the Japanese National Museum in Los Angeles.

Analysts say same-sex marriages will generate several hundred million dollars and create thousands of jobs for California's economy.

So far, no floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, famines or sunami's have been unleashed upon California. So, I guess all those picketing freaks in SF from the Phelps church were wrong again.

Today, Tuesday, is a busy day all over the state. It sucks the protesters want to ruin the day for people getting married. Fortunately, there were supporters present.

. . . They stood within a few feet of each other, but philosophically, on opposite ends of the universe. On one side, three members from Kansas, from the church of pastor Fred Phelps.

One was his daughter, and the other two were granddaughters condemning same sex marriage and its supporters, quoting the bible.

"This is how you love your brother, tell them , warn them they are going to hell if they don't repent, This is how we're doing it," said Kansas resident Grace Phelps Roper.

There were far more demonstrators in support of same sex marriage, one was protesting those protestors.

"These guys are disgusting, they're just here to make us angry, so I decided to make them angry," said Martinez resident Andrew O'Callaghan.

"They'll bankrupt this nation and we are heading to spending eternity in the flames of hell," said Kansas resident Margie Phelps.

"I've been presiding over same-sex union ceremonies for years and I'm glad to do it legally and joyfully," said Barbara Hamilton-Holway from the Unitarian Church of Berkeley.

Outside the county building, there were bomb sniffing dogs and a strong police presence.

Weddings are a money maker. So it is just b.s. when county clerks claim that they do not have the resources to perform weddings.

Regarding the photo, is that in Las Vegas or somewhere in CA?
Fellixe
There are a couple quickie chapels in California very much like the ones in Vegas. I can't say for sure but that could very well be a California chapel.

Edit: Looked it up. The 800 address above the door confirms that is definitely the one in Vegas. Couldn't find one of the same name for California.

I remember seeing something a year or so ago about how gay weddings has been a boon for the wedding industry in Canada. I suppose the gay wedding industry will be a boon to California as traveling back to the US from Canada is getting harder these days.

That brings up a good question that perhaps someone from California can answer...what are the residency requirements for attaining a marriage license in California?

Could I just go there and get married even though I'm a resident of Washington? If not, would I have to set up residence for a certain length of time? And in the event of a divorce, would I have to then be a legal resident of California again to obtain the dissolution of marriage?

I had a friend in Las Vegas who had a civil union in Vermont with his former partner, I recall him saying that in order to have the union dissolved, one of the two had to be a resident of Vermont for like 6 months first before the partnership could be dissolved. My friend was technically still a Vermont resident but his partner was not so my friend (to be spiteful) would not agree to the dissolution.
Fellixe
From what I'm seeing in the coverage that is the major distinction between California's regulations and those of Mass. The way the California setup breaks down there is no residency requirement. Start you planning if you so wish and no more than a day trip should be necessary to get you legally hitched.
Rainbow2005
As Fellixe already stated, there is no residency requirements to obtain marriage licenses in California. This is why other states are freaked out.

If you plan on getting married in San Francisco, you should make an appointment way ahead of time. Very busy there. Other counties should be better. I know that in Alameda County you do not need an appointment. You just show up.

Below is a link to a PDF regarding same-sex marriage and list of counties and contact numbers.
