QUOTE (Seeker1 @ Jun 21 2008, 12:06 AM)

If you have been following my comments throughout the years I've been on this board, it should be fairly clear by now my degree is in anthropology.
However, I also teach sociology courses because, well, our department is a combined department where we teach both together. (I find the best way to describe the generic difference between sociology and anthropology is that sociology tends to study the Western world and anthropology the non-Western world. Also, sociology tends to do more quantitative survey work, anthropology more ethnographic qualitative work.)
My area of expertise is indigenous peoples of the U.S. My dissertation was on how they use new technologies for cultural preservation.
That wasn't what I was interviewed on. What I was interviewed about were my views on the Da Vinci Code.
BTW: one more factoid. I am also mentioned in one of Robert Anton Wilson's books. Hence my 2nd quote below.
Makes sense that they put the two together. Here its all tossed in under the College of Social Science along with psychology, cop school and, believe it or not, landscaping. No, I don't know why, maybe you can explain.
As for following your comments, I have to be honest, I have a brain like a sieve. I remember dumb stuff and pretty much nothing from the important sector. I blame all that television I watch.

But very impressive Seeker, I knew from your posts that you were one of the smart ones, I just wasn't paying close enough attention to know in what field. I think anthropology is very interesting.

You don't know less, you just realize how much you don't know (over time the "knowledge gap" always increases, its why ignorance is bliss).
Moreover, I've finally realized that the intellectual prowess of an individual lies not in how often he or she is correct but how infrequently he or she is wrong.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt . -- George Eliot

I was once falsely accused by an elected official of a serious crime, a story that was covered nationally, and the subject of scholarly analyses by journalism organizations. Alas, when I was vindicated two years later and the by-then-disgraced official had been revealed as a liar, it was barely covered locally, and not at all nationally.
On the other hand, and in matters 100% unrelated to the episode I just mentioned, to my knowledge I am the only journalist in the US who has ever been able to compel an elected official to apologize for and retract accusations that stories I'd written about him were untrue, apologies and retractions he had to make on three different occasions on radio and television. For a long time one of those retractions was the "greeting" on my answering machine. (He also had to pay my legal fees and punitive damages.)

Tyo, some advice. Sick and demented people may use personal information to expoit other people. Sort of like twisted former Psyco-Ops or Black Ops not receiving proper care after seeing action. There is a demand for political operatives right now and since it is all about money, they kinda replace ethics and morals with the Almighty buck. Of course the opposite side of that story is Industrial Esponiage with all of the dirty tricks that are encompassed through cold war practices developed along time ago. There are some deviants who I refer to as practicing malicious interference, a Ham Radio term. Advice is just ignore them hoping emergency communications continue with little or no effect.

I used to work in picture framing and met some notable people working around Phoenix. Lou Rawls, Phil Mickleson, Fred Goldman, Dave Mustain. Charles Keating came in a few times, and he is a seriously cheap bastard. Former Arizona Gov. Jane Hull was actually a really nice person and I'll never forget that when she wanted to frame a group photo from the Governor's Convention she had us re-use a frame with a charicature of her drunk in Vegas. The funniest moment was when I wrote an order for a very nice pastel of Sandy Koufax for a couple and we got into a conversation about the Dodgers. The man asked me who my favorite Dodger was and I said no doubt it had to be Fernando Valenzuela. I then asked for their phone number and when I entered it into the computer up came the name - Tom Candiotti!

I love this thread, so funny and fascinating. I also thought of another thing about my near perfect self (Sarcasm, comin at ya) I was once hit on by one of the stars of a popular 70's TV show in Chicago, I was here visiting friends and went out to a bar, and this woman came on to me. She told me how she loved horses, but even more, cowboys. Well I didn't know who she was, and I had a girlfriend at the time. My friends thought I was crazy, because she's a TV star, and when they told who she was, I still didn't know. AND, I, the poor broke bastard, bought her a drink! She was there filming a rotten TV show that was canceled after the first season, and I've never heard of her since, but it was her, that I know, because she gave me her first name. Talk about making a good decision, at least once I did. Who needs that kinda life?
