Ish,

I didn't want to hijack Bushwa's birthday thread, but when I read the following from you I had to reply.

"Or head up to the cool breezes of my birthplace, Ventura, for a burger at Duke's on Seaward Ave. Because, let's face it. Gladstone's is just too damned crowded."

My husband and I have enjoyed Ventura for weekend getaways for years! I remember you mentioning before that it was your birthplace.

We always - always time our drive so that we arrive at Duke's at lunchtime. I simply can't drive past the Seaward exit off the 101 without exiting the freeway and making a beeline for the counter. I always have the same thing - the Mahi burger - it rocks.

In fact - we're heading up this Friday. As soon as I get to Duke's I'll raise my glass of beer in a toast to your 17 years with Dog Woman. (The hubs and I just celebrated our 29th!)

OOHH! Could you pick me up a T-shirt or two? 2XL. I'll send you a check to cover the cost and shipping. If you do, I'll send you a couple of these t-shirts, just like the ones we gave Randi and Jessica on last summer's cruise:

Anything for you, Ish! I say I'm going to get a T-shirt for myself every time I'm there and I always forget. This will make me remember and then we'll ALL have one!

I'll get back on Sunday and PM you.

I'm fascinated by the No Scum Allowed Saloon...

We found it by accident! We'd been in Ventura plenty of times but we mostly stick to the downtown area. In search of a Mexican restaurant, we ventured over to Seaward and found Duke's - and decided that it looked MUCH more interesting than the Mexican place. It's been our lunch stop ever since. How can you resist a place that looks like a shack with surfboards holding it up? And inside, they have old style longboards hanging from the ceiling. Pool tables in the back.....

I'd rather live in no Cal. I hate the weather we have here in the midwest. - 40 in winter and 104 in the summer. I'd rather live in some place which is 68 year round. So Cal is too hot. I remember that from visiting my gfather there when I was 12.

Oh, I thought everyone knew about Duke's.... This is my usual lunch stop on my bike run from Montalvo to Emma Wood Beach. Duke's is famous and well worth the parking hassle (which is why you'll find me on a bicycle). Readers: don't confuse it with Duke's in Malibu which is ALSO excellent.

If there are any cyclists out there, one of the world's most spectacular Class I bike paths is from Seaward, through Buenaventura State Beach up to Emma Wood State Beach. Ride lasts about 1 - 1.5 hours to terminus at the north end of Emma Wood at PCH near the high bridge where PCH intersects 101. One of the best rides on the planet. The sunset at the high bridge over the creek is as good as any in the South Pacific - bring yer SO and champagne....
