Interesting argument: revising the constitution vs an ammendment

Revisions appear to be much harder to achieve, for good reasons.

I'm no expert on the CA constitution, but I hope it works. Or at least causes these dickheads to spend more money on lawyers in order to argue it down. I don't want to jinx anything, but if it does come to a vote, i think that we'll prevail.

I think that there are a lot of people on the fence who once they have lived with this for a while will see that it's not a big deal. God hasn't vaporized Canada over this has he? tongue.gif We were just up there a couple of months ago and things seemed fine.

I'm just curious, I lived very briefly in Long Beach and I've been to California a lot but I'm not all that familiar with CA politics. What are the chances of a proposed gay marriage ban in California succeeding? I know California is one of more liberal states and judging from past elections and polls, it seems that California has more liberal and progressive voting records than most states...would there be a real possibility of this passing anyway?

I think it hinges on voter turnout. I'm pretty sure that the votes to defeat it are there as long as they make it to the ballot box

Would it only take one election cycle and only 51% of the vote or would it take more than one cycle (some states require more than one election to enact a state constitutional change) or more than just a simple majority (some states require a 60% or more majority).

Far as I know the CA constitution and be amended by a simple majority vote. I think that there is a difference between amending or adding to the constitution and changing some existing part of it, the latter being more complicated.

Well let's hope it doesn't pass (if it's on the ballot).

I almost hope it does get on the ballot. It would be a huge victory over the fundies and the theocrats to have their stand against our rights rejected by the voters. Course if we lost....

it would be something to have this pass/rejected or law upheld (you know what i mean) and obama president in the same year

I certainly hope Equality California succeeds in keeping the initiative off the ballot. If not, we have to see what voters will decide in November.

God has not seen to vaporize Canada over this issue. It is interesting to note where God has been striking. These states seem to be very supportive of Christian Taliban policies. It is silly to claim that God and Jesus would cause such things to happen.

I believe that right now there is a 53% favor for same-sex marriage in CA. It's a slim majority assuming that people even go out and vote.

That's really a misconception. This state is two states in one: One that is "liberal" and the other is conservative and Republican. Remember that Ronald Raygun came from California. There's a split. And a lot of religious lunacy from mega-churches, etc. And then you have a big Catholic element out there who can get their panties in a wade thanks to our predator hiding Cardlnal Mahoney. So it's gonna be very close at the polls if this thing can come to a vote. Now, I firmly believe that a lot of folks who are on the fence about this will say "what's the big deal" and the issue will go away if the LGBT community can simply run out the clock so to speak.
