Seriously...I never did understand the whole thing about masturbation being so terrible or immoral.

Why should a man or woman abstain from this act when it is totally natural? I understand that habitually doing so would/could hinder your relationship with your lover.

Well... right in Genesis there is the warning to Onan not to spill his seed (onanism). Technically, though, some would say it's a warning against coitus interruptus, not masturbation. More importantly, I think the real thing it is warning Hebrews about is not to refuse the Levirate.

In Judaism, if your brother dies and his widow is without issue (children), you must marry her and impregnate her. The real reason Onan is struck dead is for refusing the Levirate responsibility.

P.S. this commandment has largely gone by the wayside.

Wasn't Onan's sin that he wouldn't impregnate his barren wife's sister, since having sex with a barren woman was akin to "spilling his seed upon the ground?" I frame this as a question, as I am ignorant of the Testaments, and read of this interpretation in a novel. A character was holding forth on the Onan story. As someone raised Catholic, I was taught the "sin" side of it. Basically their position was:
(1) the only purpose of sex is procreation
(2) there is no such thing as enough procreation
(3) you'd only frustrate God's plan (by masturbating) if you didn't love God enough
(4) HELL™, etc

In addition to Seeker's coments, fwiw, a traditional perspective on many issues is that just because it is natural impulse or common desire, does not mean it is something someone should do. That relates to a whole range of issues.

When three or more people do it, it's called a staff meeting.

I'll approach this from a pseudo-scientific approach. Bonobos masturbate, and so do budgies. If animals masturbate, it is a natural imperative instead of an uniquely human action, therefore it's not a sin.

They also steal, commit adultery, probably lie and kill also. I suspect a good many of the Ten Commandments are prohibitions against survival adaptations.
