An Iraqi lawmaker says a security treaty between the US and his country would let Washington to attack any country from Iraq.

"The Iraqi-US agreement contains several items that impinge upon the sovereignty of Iraq, including the right of the US forces in Iraq to attack any nation and raid any Iraqi house and arrest people without prior permission from the Iraqi government," Khalaf al-Alyan, an Iraqi lawmaker from the Iraqi Accordance Front (IAF), told Aswat al-Iraq on Monday. The US is trying to convince Iraq to sign two treaties that would provide a legal basis for the long-term presence of US troops in the country after their UN mandate expires on December 31.

"The agreement grants the United States the right to set up a large number of bases in Iraq, ranging between 50 and 58 bases," Alyan added. Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari has formerly defended the treaty, saying he is 'optimistic' about the deal. The country's religious and political figures, however consider the treaties as humiliating saying it would turn Iraq into a de facto US colony. Iraqi officials had earlier pledged that Baghdad would not allow the country be used as a launch-pad for military attacks against other nations. Analysts, however, believe the treaties wording might oblige the country to give the United States a free hand to use Iraq as a base for waging more wars in the Middle East.
