Yep, have seen the commercials (here in Portland) as well. The are phoney and sickening, but outside of Portland, Salem and Eugene, they are probably very well received. Merkley will have a tough time beating him. Steve Novick (who barely lost to him in the primary) would have had it even tougher.

Gordon Smith - the change agent, working in bipartisan ways, with common sense, anti-Bush. I've seen the ads too. It's just depressing if they work.

They'll work like a charm east of the Cascades and south of Eugene. They'll work in the hillbilly areas outside of Corvallis (Albany, Lebanon, Sweet Home, Junction City, etc.). Heck, they'll even work with the moderates (Democrats, Republicans, and independents) here in Multnomah and Washington county.

Unfortunately and sadly, I think Merkley is going to be toast. But I'm used to voting for losing candidates. Conversely, I suspect that by associating himself with Barack, it will actually help Barack with those groups. If Merkley is sacrificed for Barack, I can live with that.

By the way, I was a Steve Novick supporter all the way. I have no problem with Jeff and am now a supporter, but I have never figured that Smith was going to be in much trouble (although I was certainly hopeful). So I voted with my heart in the primary. However, I think Smith's strategy will put it away for him.

Can't wait for Kulongski to go away... At least he's not Mannix! But that's about all I can say for him.

Pretty much point for point in agreement. Moot for me now, since I moved across the river to Vancouver, but we have the same problem in WA state, east of the Cascades. Still Smith irritates the heck out of me cause he misrepresents himself to those too dim, busy, confused to be able to discern.
