My understanding is that in 2000, the machines were just fine. From what I have read and seen on TV about that chaos it was the Supervisor of Elections all fault. She created the butterfly ballot and the candidate names were listed in a very confusing way; that's why hundreds if not thousands casted their votes for Pat Buchanan when they really intended to vote for Al Gore.
Well....yes.....and no.
The 2000 election was attributed to the "Hanging Chad". Teresa LaPore, the Supervisor of Elections (a great lady....who is also my neighbor) made a bungle on that one. The true "robbery" if you will, came during the re-count. There were so many things that went wrong...it was a circus. Then there was Gore v. Florida...I won't get into that. I remember I was in tears as I listened to Randi (who was still only local on WJNO).
The election was further confused in Florida by the fact that dead people and poodles voted. They found absentee ballots by people who were 6 feet under. NOT TO MENTION the fact that the "felon list" excluded both felons and those who had similar names to people who were felons (imagine being JOhn Smith ... you had no chance). My vote was even F-d up. When I got to my precinct they told me that I was a republican (ummmm not) that I had changed my registration (which I hadn't)......for the primary I had to vote under a "contested ballot"...after spending about an hour explaining to a person at the Supervisor of Elections that I had indeed not changed my party affiliation. I even went to their office and had some lady in tears. She called me "mean spirited". I told her....Lady, I'm a gay man..you aint seen nothin' yet!
THEN there is 2004. SSDE (Same Shit, Different Election). We really have no idea what went wrong there. They counted some ballots...missed others...Machines worked..they broke down. there was no paper trail (everything was stored on the computer which, as Randi pointed out, had been proven that it could be hacked).
