In 2004, Wayne Williams served in Iraq as an embedded trainer with the 307th Battalion of the Iraqi National Guard. Over several months, Williams and a small group of American non-commissioned officers transformed an untrained and inexperienced battalion into a unit which was capable of executing offensive combat missions with a minimum amount of American supervision. Throughout his tour of duty, Williams corresponded regularly with friends and family by e-mail. His correspondence offers a firsthand view of both the daily life of a soldier in Iraq and what has become the United States’ primary mission in Iraq: training the Iraqi Security Forces to defend their own country.

I'd love to have a 44 pound cat. Now there's a kitty that could run with the big dogs! Ok, more like waddle with the big dogs but you get the point.

I swear the three terrorist cats must weigh about 20 pounds each when I pick them up. Well, all except Jimmy (James, without his Lilly he's become Jimmy). Jimmy is like his momma, lean and very much part Russian Blue.

Did I mention I'm getting a housemate? The three terrorist kitty's mom is moving in with my friend's son. Just until he gets back on his feet again but he's here to help me out around the house. Well, he will be here when he gets moved in anyway.

If I come back as a cat after I die I want to come live at your house. LOL

No problem. Were you around here when his letters were posted here? I was on his email list and he gave me permission at the time to post his emails here. He had a way with words and provided a very frank accounting of what was going on.

No I missed that. You should start a thread to post them in. I would be interested in hearing his perspective but don't want to take away from people buying the book.

Yay! He could use it. He just got married.

Some overshadowing: he has recently begun exhibiting some PTSD symptoms. He recently got into a fender bender and thought he was in Iraq. He went all "iraqi patrol" on the car in front of him. When he first returned he made fun of the notion that PTSD would affect him - and kinda made light of it since he didn't do any really heavy compbat or anything.

Our live experiences have a way of embedding themselves in us only to surface in the most unfortunate way. I think we have a long way to go in figuring out the human mind, and what effect these things have on us.

HA! Seeing that on the internet is what prompted me to post Wayne's book here. It strongly reminded me of a letter he sent us. That could easily be his unit.

Oh my God, I saw this big kitty on MSNBC. Actually Contessa Brewer, Alex Witt and Tamron Hall fought to get the 12 noon newscast to hold the kitty.

Are you kidding? I have dogs that are far more finicky than any cat I've ever owned. I remember my dog Sigmund would stay upstairs with my housemate and my cats would greet me at the door when I got home from work years ago and now I have two hounds that won't eat anything but Beneful and four cats that will eat whatever I sit in front of them. I have one fussy cat but at 17, he's earned the right. He was never fussy until his IBD got out of hand.

No sir, cats have nothing on dogs when it comes to being finicky and fussy.

Oh, I don't know. My cat would eat only one particular flavour of one particular brand of cat food. Then the company got bought out, and the new company put out a "new and improved flavour" version. Let me tell ya, Brutus took one piece in her mouth and spit it out. I had to buy the last 3 small bags of the old stuff in the city and slowly over the next few months slowly mixed in more of the new stuff in with the old until all the old was all gone. She'll eat the new stuff now, but I can tell she's not completely happy about it.

My cat ate anything, like my dog now does. The cat was finicky with the way she was w/people.

Some days she would greet me at the door too. sometimes she would hide and wait to jump out to scare me.

She was a good alarm clock too. Made me get up and go to work everyday. I miss Ralph.

Rufus loves to go outside but always wants me to go with him. I'm sitting at my computer and he'll come up to the door like he wants in but when I open it he turns, walks out on the patio, and then looks back like "Hey You Coming Out". I swear he thinks he's a dog.
