I believe that Grover Norquist statement,"Barack Obama is basically John Kerry with a tan." is meant more to point out Grover Norquist's opinion about Senator Obama's liberalism than express an opinion on the issue of race.

Oh, so he used race in his analogy but REALLY meant his Liberalism ? bs.gif

Grover Norquist is obviously ill-informed.
John Kerry has no balls guts strength, fortitude, or courage,
while Barack Obama has ALL of these characteristics.

That's a stretch! He could have said "He's another John Kerry"....but he didn't.

Sometimes when one tries to give short witty quotes (like the blurbs you read in movie advertisements) you can slip up. If he (Mister Norquist) had made a statement like "Barack Obama is basically John Kerry with a better tailor" he would not have crossed the racial line with his "tan" comment. The fact that we now have someone of mixed race as a serious Presidential candidate is gonna be tough on the "old guys" who will make verbal mistakes due to their social baggage of times past.

Then the "old guys" need to learn how to act...I don't think he was trying to be "witty", I think he was just being his usual asshole self...

all of these type things seem to have dif meaning depending on who is saying them. We must be carefull because what is good for the goose...... Just look at all the age quotes for mccain. "kerry with a tan" does not sound like a racist type comment, sounds like a description. Should he have said black Kerry?

He was trying to be "quotable" and keep some public interest in his causes, thats why he tried to come up with something clever to say about him. If it was good, every repug would use his neat little catch phrase. Think of "flip flop", "cut and run", "up or down", all repug catch phrases regurgitated over and over by everyone trying to keep the message identical.

It just turned out that he is a little too backroom for his own good, and he said something that he probably would say in a smoky room to a bunch of CEO's, to the amusement of all.

And no, a "Black Kerry" doesnt work. "Kerry with a better tailor, a hotter wife, a smaller jaw, etc" would have been clever.

Don't inject race into it, bad idea.

Precisely. Unfortunately Mister Norquist used racial skin color as the differential, not some other defining feature that was more neutral, aseptic and not so prone to attracting verbal/written lightning.

With the exception of Keith Olbermann, the "liberal" media isn't covering this. But if an Obama supporter says anything that might refer to McCain's age, the "liberal" media is over it. thumbsdown.gif
