Being mostly Irish, I tend to burn over a burn. The only thing that worked for me was Noxema. It tends to make you peel but it does relieve the pain.
Getting it on the back is tricky though. I really don't know what to tell you except cold compresses, ice packs and cold baths. Anything to draw out the heat.
My parents used to use vinegar on my younger brother. Don't know if it took away the pain but he stopped crying so our suffering seemed to be worth it.

One summer I was building a garage, and it was about 95 outside, and once I get started on something, I keep going until it's time to quit, well this day, I just kept working with my shirt off, when I went to crawl under the porch to unplug my cords, I scraped my back on the porch and man did I see stars!!! I had 2nd degree burns on my back, and had to sleep on my stomach for 3 weeks, man, I'll never do that again.

RANDI! CONSIDER TRYING THAT LAVENDER OIL IN THE BATH!
ALSO CONSIDER ROTTMOM'S VINEGAR REMEDY!
Here are some remedies I found online, and BOTH those are included [as well as aloe vera gel]:
* Aloe - Take as many leaves as necessary from an aloe plant; refrigerate; peel off top layer of leaves; apply the side of the leaf with flesh exposed directly to the sunburn. Other remedies use aloe vera juice: for mild to medium sunburn, keep the affected area moist with aloe vera juice. Repeat frequently. This will reduce the pain and the amount of peeling. Aloe vera ointment works well, too, as it contains oil and will not evaporate. For a severe sunburn, keep the area moist at all times with aloe vera juice. Since aloe vera is an astringent, you may want to use aloe vera ointment or some sort of oil, such as olive or baby.
* Aloe Juice - Combine the aloe juice with ½ the amount of vitamin E. Dab on the sunburn. Vitamin E is a good moisturizer.
* Apple cider vinegar - Apply apple cider vinegar to the burn with a cotton ball to relieve the pain. Keep the skin moistened. This remedy will prevent blistering and peeling.
* Aspirin - Aspirin kills the pain and reduces inflammation and redness of a sunburn. It short-circuits the whole sunburn process. It must be taken within 24 hours of getting sunburned.
* Baking soda - Dissolve some baking soda in water and make a compress using a clean cloth. Another remedy is to add 1/2 cup of baking soda to a tepid bath and soak. Instead of drying the affected area with a towel, let it air dry. Baking soda is cooling and will help the skin retain moisture.
* Baths - Add 20 drops of each of lavender and chamomile essential oils to a tubful of cool water and soak for 10 minutes
* Bergamot - Add bergamot oil to cool bathwater.
* Calendula - Put 20 drops of calendula tincture in four ounces of water and bathe the skin until the pain goes away
* Cucumber - Rub sunburned area with fresh cucumber slices
* Epsom Salts - Dissolve Epsom salts in water and make a compress using a clean cloth.
* Ice - Apply ice or cold water to the burned area. This will stop the burning process and cool the skin
* Lavender - Mix 20-25 drops of lavender oil in one cup of water and bathe the sunburned area
* Lemon Water - Mix the juice of three lemons into two cups of cold water and sponge on the sunburn. The lemon will cool the burn, act as a disinfectant, and will promote healing of the skin
* Milk - Make a compress of whole milk (or buttermilk) and apply to the burned area for 20 minutes; repeat every two to four hours. Wash the milk off so you won't smell sour! The fat content of the milk is soothing for burns
* Oil - Cover the area with cooking oil and sprinkle powdered ginger on the oil. This will promote healing
* Onion - Bruise an onion and rub on the burn.
* Peppermint - Apply peppermint oil to the sunburned skin. You can also make a mild peppermint infusion and use it as a wash to cool the sunburn
* Potato - Grate a potato and apply it to the burned area. The starch will cool and soothe the burn
* St. Johns Wart - Make an ointment or salve with the essential oil of St. Johns wort for burns that have not broken the skin. It is anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial.
* Tea - Make some tea, cool, and apply to the burn. While any tea may be beneficial, mint tea, such as peppermint or spearmint are especially good. The teas have tannins that help the healing process
* Urtica Urens - Put 20 drops of urtica urens tincture in four ounces of water and bathe the skin. This remedy is good for itchy, prickly skin
* Witch Hazel - Make a decoction of witch hazel and apply with a compress
* Yarrow - Native Americans used an infusion of ground yarrow as a wash
* Yogurt - Apply plain yogurt with live cultures
* Yogurt and Strawberries - mix equal parts of yogurt and mashed strawberries and apply to the sunburned area for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water.

The sun just doesn't seem to be the same as it was when I was younger. Even people with dark complexions burn now. I always wear sunblock.
This is the best stuff for burns.

You can get it at your local Chinese Apothecary or you can order it on-line It smells a little earthy but it works every time.

I got sunburned on my ass when I went into the pond at Music Camp au natural (it's an accepted practice there to jump in the pond sans clothing) and was sunning myself on a platform in the middle of the pond...best sunburn ever
Hopefully I'll get to do it again in about 1 1/2 weeks...good god vacation can't come soon 'nuff.

I have had so many bad burns, and there is one remedy that actually works. This procedure stops the pain, and prevents peeling but it's messy. Apply a heavy application of original formula Maalox, when it starts to dry, add more, layer upon layer if necessary. Don't treat the entire burn at once because this really chills you. This even works for a large grease burn. You may need to turn on a small fan and keep it about 4 feet away from you to accelerate the process that takes most of the heat out of the burn if it's a deep burn or a grease burn. It's got to be the plain old Maalox the other stuff is sticky. Take whatever OTC anti-inflammatory that you use, prolly not aspirin since you have asthma...but use something.

Personally I never tan..Only time I tanned was when I was in Alberta Canada 8000 feet above sea level. Weird huhg?
So, I have a number of suggestions that have worked for me.
Aloe gel...from Panama Jack...Apply as often as needed....& Bactine; lots of short ice cold showers
Cold tea bags for the eyes. or for the face, soak a towel in a bowl of cooled tea and apply that to the face. Black tea works better than green tea
Use copious amounts of moisturizer [oatmeal water (external use), oatmeal baths] because You don't want to peel, but if you do it's starts to get itchy. I've used Ivy Dry gel for that. it worked for me.
Boost up on vitamins that promote healthy skin. Vitamin A is what I increased as a supplement...Carrots carrots, carrots!
A shot of B12 /B-complex could also help you feel better.
Avoid sun for a couple weeks...or at least till your skin stops smarting.
Personally I won't sun at all between 10 am and 5 pm.
If I want to go crabbing or fishing, I'm slathered in sun screen and Bull frog. And, I'm covered up. I look pretty rediculous, but I refuse to get burnt any more. And even with all the prevention, I still get some color...a healthy splash.

I am the whitest person I know.... I have had 3rd degree sunburns when I was a kid. I just don't do it anymore. I would have knocked on every door in my neighborhood before I would have went out without sunscreen.... I don't care how crazy those people would have thought I was. It's just not worth the skin cancer. Maybe she should try the spray on sunscreen next time. I can usually get good coverage even when I am by myself.

"During the earlier part of the 20th century, a French chemist by the name of René-Maurice Gattefossé became interested in the use of essential oils for their medicinal use. Previously, he focused on the aromatic use of essential oils, but his interest in their medicinal use grew after an accident heightened his curiosity. While working, he burned his arm rather badly. By reflex, he plunged his burned arm into the closest liquid which happened to be a large container of lavender essential oil. The burn he suffered healed quickly and left no scar. Gattefossé is credited with coining the term aromatherapy in 1928 within an article where he supports the use of using essential oils in their whole without breaking them down into their primary constituents. In 1937, Gattefossé wrote a book called Aromathérapie: Les Huiles essentielles hormones végétales that was later translated into English and named Gattefossé's Aromatherapy. It is still in print and widely read."

I had one summer when I wasn't working that I spent a lot of time at the beach and thought I had a great tan. A black friend of mine put her arm next to mine and walked away laughing hysterically.
I've never tried for a tan since. Especially after seeing some of the leathery faced tanned old women at the restaurant I used to work at. If that is what happens, I'll stay Irish white thank you very much.

i tan pretty easily and have only been sunburnt once. i do overheat when i play golf and tennis because i usually where a hat.
sunburn also causes the overheating part which makes it hard to sleep and overall uncomfortableness. this i have down to a fine solution. cold shower of course to drop your body temperature but ice packs on top your head and back of your neck prior to sleep really helps. lol and the hump hair is like an added attraction without actually sweating or expanding energy.

Dig it. in High school my best girl friend and my BF were tanning animals, witht ath olive Italian tanning skin. I every frigging product that claimed to tan not burn and every time, I got burnt, not tanned, Red, redder, reddest. the only "tan" I get is when my freckles get darker..comparatively, they look green next to the red skin, LOL. That's when I know it's time to go indoors.
I'll keep my Irish White, too! Yeah, those leather skinned folks look like their hides would make great portmanteus

Sorry.
Lavender essential oil, and castile soaps containing the oil, has antiseptic properties and burns are notorious for becoming infected if skin is broken.

Maul-Mart sells a long handled gadget made for just that purpose, it's like a long handled back scrubber but it has a smooth surface intended for applying lotion. It's in the pharmacy section of the store. But I think Randi is mostly complaining about not having the services of a man's hand

Well, we generally scout places in the shade - it's pretty critical. But the walking to and fro public transport, etc. is a decent amount of time in the sun. Gotta get those E vitamins.
