"During the earlier part of the 20th century, a French chemist by the name of René-Maurice Gattefossé became interested in the use of essential oils for their medicinal use. Previously, he focused on the aromatic use of essential oils, but his interest in their medicinal use grew after an accident heightened his curiosity. While working, he burned his arm rather badly. By reflex, he plunged his burned arm into the closest liquid which happened to be a large container of lavender essential oil. The burn he suffered healed quickly and left no scar. Gattefossé is credited with coining the term aromatherapy in 1928 within an article where he supports the use of using essential oils in their whole without breaking them down into their primary constituents. In 1937, Gattefossé wrote a book called Aromathérapie: Les Huiles essentielles hormones végétales that was later translated into English and named Gattefossé's Aromatherapy. It is still in print and widely read."

Kim and Aggie on "How Clean is Your House?" often use lavender or tea tree oil in a spray bottle mixed with water as a natural anti-bacterial and deodorizer. When my floors and counters are finished I am going to try both to see what smells/does best where. Can't find them locally, so will have to order online. Is any brand better than others?

I get lavender oil from GNC or Hi-Health. They sell ounce (?) size bottles of pure oil of all kinds. It is best if you dilute the oil with a carrier oil, like sesame, if you are going to put it on your skin. As a cleaner, I would presume you would use them full strength. I love the smell of Lavender!

I am a hair stylist and whenever I burn myself with curling irons etc. I immediately put a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil and the burn is gone! Really works well.

Hmm tea tree oil (mixed in water) is very good for soaking feet made itchy by athlete's foot. I wonder if lavender tree oil has a similar property, reducing itch.

Pennyroyal works also. Good for insect repellant as well.

But don't take pennyroyal if youre pregnant. Or trying to be pregnant.

When I get one of my week-long migrainous periods, I carry a sprig of lavender and a sprig of rosemary to sniff at the first sign of visual aura. Helps hold me till I can go get a cigarette and a cup of coffee.

Never use essential oils full strength. For your floors and counter tops make linen water....1 oz. vodka, 6-8 drops lavender oil 16 oz. distilled water in a spray bottle. You can also use this as a room freshener and of course linen water...mist your sheets lightly before getting in bed. Aura Caria is my favorite brand. Dr. Bronner's makes both lavender and tea tree castile soap (others, too) which I love. I have dry sensitive skin rolleyes.gif and the lavneder castile soap makes my skin just like everyone elses' LOL. Just 3-4 drops of the soap on a wet scrubby will lather you all over with more suds than you know what to do with. Replace the cap with a cap from dish detergent, though so you have control of the flow otherwise it's just wasted.

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps All-One! Yeah, read that label!

Do your research on using essential oils, K?
