There's a lot of stupid people in this country that listen to Rush Limbaugh and make him rich.
The real cool thing.. although the first amendment gives Rush the right to free speach (and any idiot can pay!) .. that doesn't mean the anyone has to listen!
I like to listen to the intro to his show.. cool theme song (from The Pretenders' “My City Was Gone” ) .. Where Limbaugh is paying Hynde approximately $500,000/year which she donates to the animal rights organization PETA. .. Nice!
and Let's be "compassionate".. he does need a pile of his money for his pain killer addiction.. which is no doubt caused by the looser that he supported.. (George W.) .. there has to be a lot of guilt for that!
I say... be MORE COMPASSIONATE... Vote for Obama.. Help end his pain, maybe Rush can end his addiction.. Do it for Rush!

Isn't the 400M scattered out over a period of time? Up to 2016? Which still makes his salary 50M per year? And he receives a signing bonus just like an athlete or CEO of a mega-corporation.
Well, we know the world is upside down. We actually measure the greatness of people by the money they make.
So that's about right, if in fact the world is upside down. We all know what teachers, firefighters, social workers make and we know what Rush Limbaugh makes.
We also know that Rush competes with himself in some of the most rural spaces in America.
I wonder how much of Rush's audience is on the Internet? And, how is the Internet streaming audience measured? By clicks?

The genius of Rush Limbaugh is his profound insights into human nature and broadcasting as a craft. He understands that radio is first, last and forever an entertainment medium. He also mastered the rare ability to convince his audience that he is manifesting a high minded, benevolent & transcendent mission of Truth.

I wouldn't call it genius, but I agree he understands some of human nature - mostly lower human nature. I'll also agree that he has a rare ability to posture as a high roader, even when he's taking the low road. The world is full of demagogues who use prejudice and lies to obtain power. IMO, the only thing different about Limbaugh is that his reach is greater, piggybacked on the radio spectrum.

OK after having read every single post, I have this...Rush is an idiot, and he works for Clear Channel, maybe you've heard of them, a corporate giant in media, for instance they own 85% of all the billboards in the US, and control almost 70% of all the radio stations, they are a product of the elimination of the Fairness Doctrine, thanks to Reagan. He brings in ad dollars from very big corporations, so he get's a cut. Also, consider this, the RW is panicking, they are scared shitless of Barrack Obama, so they have to re-up the big blowhard. It's all good, the gop is dead in the water.
QUOTE (GCurry @ Jul 2 2008, 09:43 PM)

OK, it's a little hard to lay out, so I'll give the abbreviated form.
Consider the bell curve of the population of the US, along the dimension of how inclined individuals are (at one extreme) to seek comfort above all else vs (at the other extreme) to seek understanding / growth at all costs. Imagine that -5 was comfort at any cost (including denial of reality), 0 was more or less neutral / balanced, and +5 was understanding at any cost (including denial of intellectual / emotional comfort). Each person has some orientation towards comfort vs growth, so plot the distribution of that over that scale. Narrow it to political understanding if you like. For example, Barbara Bush might be a -4 or -5 because of her saying that she didn't want to think about Iraq deaths because it might upset her beautiful mind.
So I imagine that that distribution curve resembles a bell curve, except that it is skewed toward the comfort end, with perhaps 60% or even 70% to the left of 0, and the remainder to the right of 0. Oversimplifying, I think Limbaugh's target market / audience is to the left of 0, and Randi's is to the right. It's harder to be a liberal, intellectually and emotionally, than a conservative, and I believe that manifests in market size.
Been pondering this for awhile and even did some research, but have come up empty handed. Would I be safe to assume this is something you came up with on your own?
