I think a lot of the difference between where Obama should be and where he is could be called the "racism factor". There are a lot of racist people in America. We will be very lucky if it is only 15 percent of the population.

Are people out there still convinced that those who won't vote for Obama are racist? If all the black people vote for Obama, that's black pride, but if white people vote for McCain, that's because they are racist? Now, that's ridiculous.

Many people don't feel Obama is up for the job and they are not comfortable with his stance on the issues or lack of real federal or managerial experience. Obama's actions during the last two weeks have people really questioning his purpose and his "real" agenda, not the message produced by Axelrod.

If you keep saying that people are "racist" if they won't vote for Obama, it will just drive people away. That was the case during the last 10 primaries this year and it will get worse. People won't vote for Obama not because they are racist... they may vote for McCain because you accuse them of something they are not.

Sometimes, people don't like you because you are unlikable, not because of your race, sex or sexual orientation.

By the way, there are a lot of racist people on this PLANET.

Polls schmolls...

Barack is laying the groundwork for building a honking huge coalition. He's irritating some of the sensibilities of his base (hey, we've been irritated more than this over the last 7 years -- am I right?) and there is some confusion over who he is and what he supports.

Give it a few more weeks, and I'll bet you see those numbers jump.

There has been some initial fall-off from the Barack-worshippers, but they'll come back. We in his base must come to understand that he can't publically support some of our more strident positions, or he will lose. In fact, by giving the appearance of disappointing some of us, he actually becomes more appealing to conservative Democrats, Independents, and moderate Republicans. We in his base need to understand that in order to actually win the presidency, we are going to have to learn how to play nice with others.

Oh yeah, "compromise"... never something that "hot-heads" think applies to them. Many Barack supporters (now possibly former Barack supporters) have some growing up to do.

I predict Barack will win in a landslide come November 60-40 with 350+ electoral votes. Yay! The good guys get to win one!

Some people's voting is determined by racism. My mother-in-law for one. I have no idea how many like her there are. She is naturalized Japanese. When she and her husband visited a few weeks ago, she offered her opinion after seeing an Obama sign in our yard. Her desire is that a white man be President. But McCain is too crazy for her. She thinks that Obama will be assassinated. So her vote really boiled down to Obama's running mate. If not a white man, she'll vote McCain. If it is, likely Obama. Her husband is from South Carolina and feels the same. They're both mid 70s or so. Sad, but there are some like that.

That is a ridiculous misinterpretation of what I said. I never said that people who do not vote for Obama are racist. I said that some racist people won't vote for Obama.

Are you really claiming that there is not one person in this country who is racist against Blacks or are you claiming that some people who hate Blacks are going to vote for Obama. I think that either belief is completely ludicrous. As long as there is one person in this country who is too racist to vote for someone with dark skin, my statement is accurate. I'd be willing to bet that there are a lot more than one person too racist to vote for Obama.

There are also people too sexist to vote for a woman, too anti-semitic to vote for someone Jewish, and two racist to vote for someone White. I suspect that the total number of people voting for Obama because they won't vote for some White is far less than the total number of people voting for McCain because they are too racist to vote for someone Black.

Not that these people would ever admit to being racist. I'm sure that they will have their excuses. Some will be partly believable ("he is too inexperienced"). Others will be complete fabrications (such as "he is a Moslem"). Of course, the last one would only come from someone too racist to vote for a Moslem.

As I keep saying, national polls are irrelevant and meaningless. Look at state polls. According to http://www.electoral-vote.com , which tracks state polls and projects an electoral vote total, Obama is up 317 to 221.

I understand why some people don't like O'bama. Some are die hard Rebublicans who cannot vote outside of their "bitterness".

So, when I detect I am in an Obama haters presence I ask a few questions. I try not to prejudge, but I do. If the person's demographic is over 65, white, and female and the answer to the question "Why do you dislike O'Bama?" includes the words "I don't trust him..Reverand Wright.. Farrakan (sorry if misspelled)..and Muslum" I conclude that if not racist, they are at least brainwashed.

All I ask of someone who dislikes O'bama to do is give me an opinion about his policies or some concrete action O'Bama took in the past to allow me to understand WHY that person dislikes O'Bama.

Too much of the responses I get are obviously from people how are trying to hide the truth. They just can't say the words "because he's black". If someone were to say that is their reason I would at least give them points for honesty.

My Father In Law - 82 is voting Republican most likely based on the Capital Gains Tax alone - He doesn't want it to increase from the now 15%. He regrets voting for Bush twice - says he's a fuck up.

He said he's talked to his buddies in Real Estate, he used to sell homes for a living. He says his friends have never been so bad off so fast and he couldn't figure it out. I explained to him why the realty market tanked was b/c of the Bush Admin's reluctance and hands off approach to enforcing predatory lending laws. He understands that now. He and his girlfriend are retired and think McSame is the answer. 82 and trying to preseve what assets/investments they have so that's his mindset.

Told him also about Reagan and Bush 41 taking off the solar panels off the White House. tols him they cut the incentives to solar-ize homes and businesses. He said the Bush's are stupid. I told him also WTF did you buy that gas guzzeling Lucerne? He say's I don't know probably should have bought a Prius.

It just take a lot to get their minds wrapped about new opportunities. He's changed in the last 4 years for total right to moderate.

82 Years is hard to fix. But it's waking his foggy old fart ass up.

My Dad's 85. He will not vote for O'Bama because of his race. As I said in my comment above I at least respect his honesty.

Also, it's how I understand O'Bama's reluctance to throw Rev. Wright under the bus. I love my Dad. I just know his world view is shaped by where he grew up, and when he grew up.

Being comfortable with the mental image of Sen. O'Bama as president is a purely cultural and primaily generational thing, IMHO.

BTW cheers to Randi. You'll just let anyone into your "house" , heh

I'll give you a 4th. The polls you cite are for a 2 man election. Add in Nader and Barr and the number get a lot closer. One poll I saw had Nader at 6% and Barr at 3%, reducing Obamas lead from 6 to 3 percentage points.

The Realclearpolitics poll I saw had Obama up by 4%, so after deducting the Nader effect, he would be pretty much even. At this time last election, Kerry had a much larger lead over bush I believe.

not worried, in fact, if we are both still here the days before the election, I will predict right now that in the days leading up obama will have a double digit lead, or if not double digit real close like 8 or more...

One could argue that since 90+ percent of blacks support Obama that racism could be helping more than hurting him. Or at the very least, offsetting most of it. Of course, it also depends on wether one is open enough to believe that racism is a 2 way street.

So, in other words, Obama HAS to lie to win? OK, i already knew that and most people will see through it eventually. His flip flopping is allowing the republicans to get all the ammunition they need to destroy him once the race actually begins after the conventions. Kerry's lead at this pont in the last election was a lot bigger than Obamas today.

He also has a likability issue that's plagued him from the start. People see him as a comedian and not as a brilliant and passionate person, this makes him a gimmick, remember Jesse Ventura? That's how a lot of people feel about Al Franken because they don't actually know him.

How about a link to those "predatory lending laws" that were not enforced. Lenders are free to loan and borrowers are free to borrow. The vast majority of the defaults are from speculation. People involved in these ventures are hardly clueless. They rolled the dice and lost. I have bought and sold several homes in my lefetime and the mounds of paperwork and financing options have increased over the years. That is a good thing when the choice is made realistic expectations. Too many people went with the cheapest short term payments and highest long term risk. these are the people being burned and loing their homes. The ones who opted for the safer, fixed price loans have seen their property go down in value, but their payments have remained the same, excepting taxes of course. Bailing out these borrowers is something i totally disagree with. They made their choices and they need to live with them. The same with the lenders. Let the stockholders take the hit, not the taxpayers.

How come when 90 percent of blacks supported Bill Clinton, it was for valid reasons, but when 90 percent of blacks support Obama, it is because of "racism".

90 percent of blacks always vote Democratic. It is in their self-interest. I see no reason to claim a different motivation this time.

I hate to say this Laura, but after years of the fear and smear of republican criminality, fraud and corruption, it is no wonder you feel that way. But despite all of that, there are many things they can't control. Just think...if Iraq had been a success, etc...we wouldn't know many, many things they had done. There are still powers that be and karma in this world. They have sewn such corrupt seeds, I think its bearing nasty, stinky, tainted fruit. What goes around comes around honey.
