Al Franken will probably lose to a right wing moron in his bid for the Senate because he didnt pay some obscure state tax for some obscure business deal, something in retrospect would be easily overlooked.

McCain on the other hand doesnt pay

Additional bills totaling $6,744 for the years 2004 through 2007 were paid by the trust on Friday after Newsweek magazine questioned why the trust had fallen into arrears on the two-bedroom, two-bath oceanfront property, McAllister said.

and it is a story that lasts 5 minutes...I heard a critique from media matters on Peter B Collins show yesterday about how the media is favoring or protecting McCain, I agree...I have heard too much of it to ignore it.

I'm with you on Franken. He in fact DID pay the taxes, but it was later learned they were paid to the wrong agencies. So he had to pay virtually the same amount to the correct agencies. Non story, save perhaps for the fact that it could be part of a story about non-stories.

Thing is, I think the McCain episode is a non-story, too. Somebody think Cindy McCain is refusing to pay $6,800 in property taxes? Clearly, there was a screw-up somewhere. It's not part of a pattern of efforts to, just for example, withhold taxes due at their 10 properties across the country, then negotiate the overdue amounts to something less than is owed.

So, is the solution to the nonsense generated over Franken's situation to blow out of proportion McCain's? I don't think so. Moreover, the reality is that the coverage given certain stories is also tied to what else is going on when a given situation arises. There's more hitting the fan these days, so the insatiable maw that is the political media doesn't need to masticate over McCain's tax screw-up. Give them a slow week however and break an identical story, and you'll see it coast to coast, 24/7, with questions being shouted as the candidate scurries into an SUV.

Given his meteoric rise and status, there's no doubt an Obama critique catches fire and circulates more quickly - it's the nature of people and the media to go after the high-flyer, and it's wrong. Part of the blame also goes to reality - the timing and what else is happening at a given point in time. Reality is not terribly orderly, or fair.
