That show has long been one of my favorites for the very reason you cite. It is a real competition between genuinely talented individuals and, although controversy arises from time to time, the judging balances public popularity with legitimate and insightful examination of the dancers' skills so the winner must be worth the honor of winning.I was excited about Debbie Allan appearing as a judge in the preliminaries until one of her proteges won and she had to recuse herself from participating further. Have missed the last couple weeks so I can't wait to have time to catch up on the competition.
Sorry to see Shane Sparks gone from the judging. But he moved on to MTV's America's Best Dance Crew produced by Randy Jackson. That show is also worth taking a look at because again it relies on genuinely talented individuals and gives the bottom vote winners an opportunity to apply their skill to stay in the competition. Also good to see the dancers get respect for skills they didn't necessarily have to go through mainstream routes to attain. There's no real degree in B-Boyology but some of it's practitioners are as expert in their field as any other artist. (Yeah, big fan of SuperCrew).
Exactly. If they'd judge American Idol that way, it might be worth watching. It's frustrating to see some of the people who win have so little talent.
It's obvious a lot of these kids have been training and dancing their whole lives, so it's great to see dance get some mainstream attention. Since quality film musicals are so rare these days, and not everyone can see a broadway show, I hope this will help to revive it as an art form that more than just a privileged few can enjoy.
