Full Version: If You're A True Liberal, You Can't Run to the "Center"

Boy, Arianna sure nailed this one. I too am sick of this "OBama's moving to the center" crap on the media, when what I've seen is him make three mistakes in as many days by tacking to the Right/Wrong, not the "Center".

Liberalism IS the center. All Obama has to do is hold to that Liberal center of reason and good judgment, and he'll be fine. All he has to do is BE LIBERAL and he'll be fine.

But instead -- I don't know whether his campaign has been infiltrated by the losing Clinton strategy, or what, but some of the things he's done recently are daft.

Apparently, it's been chapping Huffington's ass too:

I can unequivocally say: the Obama campaign is making a very serious mistake. Tacking to the center is a losing strategy....
Running to the middle in an attempt to attract undecided swing voters didn't work for Al Gore in 2000. It didn't work for John Kerry in 2004. And it didn't work when Mark Penn (obsessed with his "microtrends" and missing the megatrend) convinced Hillary Clinton to do it in 2008.

Fixating on -- and pandering to -- this fickle crowd is all about messaging tailored to avoid offending rather than to inspire and galvanize.

...

Realpolitik is one thing. Realstupidpolitik is quite another.

Furthermore, there are no "swing voters". There isn't a person in this country that hasn't made up their mind about what's been happening politically over the past 8 years. What there are, are a few people who simply want attention by saying they are "uncertain" when in practical fact their actual voting habits are pretty consistent.

So cut the crap and just BE LIBERAL. Have the courage of those convictions and the White House is Barack's, no problem.

This also lost the Senate seat, and a mountain of respect, for Harold Ford Jr.

Of course, we understand politics and realize that he needs to pull some Christians away from McSame. But he shouldn't just assume that our patience is limitless.
The only one who's ever made the Bait and Switch tactic work was Bill Clinton when he campaigned as a Liberal and once elected, stabbed us in the back like the Judas that he is.

It has not worked for a Dem on the national scene since and it never will again.

Fool us once........

Gee, I see the local "moderates" and the surprising number of conservatives who frequent this board haven't checked in on this topic yet. They must be busy arguing for conciliation and accommodation in some of the other threads. Amazing how many passionate Randi cheerleaders post like Blue Dogs.

So should I begin refering to liberals as the center rather than the left? Just out of curiousity, who occupies the left in your world?

Just did, though I doubt 5X5 will see my response as he has threatened to put me on ignore on more than one occasion. smile.gif

Yeah, I mean, I can really live with Obama as President. I really can. But nobody gets a free pass anymore. Feet to the fire and there they shall stay.

Now I'm not going to flip out at every little political move he makes. I'm voting for him because he the best we have at the moment. Maybe I sound like a broken record, but this was never about Obama to me. He can't carry Dennis Kucinich's jock strap.
Obama is a stepping stone to better things. He is the result of the Left's rise to power in the Democratic party. If we can get the "black guy" elected in America, think of what we can do later on.

Don't get me wrong, on his own merits Barack Obama will be a fine President.
But he's not the final result of the Left Movement. He's the first. And a good first step to be sure.
He's not DK, he's not John Edwards. But what he is is a lot better than Bush/McSame/Clinton.

A lot better.

But we still can't let him off the leash.

Excuse the interruption....

But when pussbags like Limbaugh etc. call Right Leaning goons like Clinton or Lieberman "Liberals" or "the Left", that makes anything Left of Right Left.

You dig? tongue.gif

Yes. When you take the party names out of the questioning, and just ask people about their policy convictions on something like health care, defense and interventionism, poverty, the environment, free speech/expression, civil rights, people OVERWHELMINGLY come down on the Liberal side of things. In truth, Liberal ideals ARE the center of American thinking. Conservatism is not. And Neocon thinking DEFINITELY is not.

Democratic Socialists, of which I am one. And Communists are the extreme Left, just as Fascists are the extreme Right.

And not in "my" world. In THE world.

It is the conservatives themselves, and the corporate media who have intentionally changed the definitions of the word Liberal.

In most of the world, our Liberals are conservative by comparison to how most of the world defines "the Left".

I identify with this label as well. At least, this is the type of Socialism I tend to view as productive in the interests of compassion.

A.) I'm a girl.

B.) It's not a "threat" to ignore someone when they repeatedly say stupid things. It's merely a method to eliminate boredom.

A.) Wow! I had no idea.

B.) I hadn't been touched by you in a while, and I was looking to pull your chain in a couple of posts to see if you had me on ignore. smile.gif

That would be an interesting exercise. laugh.gif

In any case, I was just trying to see if 5x5 was still paying attention to me. smile.gif
