Well, who is "the Chinese"?

Certainly not the average Chinese citizen. Their government is a joke no doubt.
Many of those products are manufactured by American companies who moved or set up operations in China to avoid regulations and other silly safety measures (right, Peak?).

We have to pinpoint who did what and blame them along with the gov't institutions that are too incompetent, or corrupt, to provide oversight.

If I was President I would insist that the Chinese allow us to set up a consumer safety commission in China that inspects certain goods before they are shipped. Either that or stop imports altogether.

I don't believe American companies are setting up shop in China, so much as American companies are contracting Chinese manufacturers to produce goods for them. You will find that in many cases, there are no American companies producing those goods, thus companies have to look to foreign manufacturers.

I believe the Chinese need us as much as we need them. Following the rash of defective products, I believe the Chinese will make the necessary adjustments.

That reminds me, I heard on Reliable Sources today, that Ted Koppel is doing a series on China, The People's Republic of Capitalism that looks very good. They're becoming more and more economically entwined with the U.S. these days. It might behoove us all to understand more about this country that is becoming the world's next super power.

That reminds me of the George Carline routine. Shell shock is now post traumatic stress disorder. More words don't change the reality of the situation. American companies are setting up shop in China.

Gee I wonder why American companies can no longer produce goods here? Its a mystery. tongue.gif

When Bush visits Beijing, he will find a way to insult them. Probably ask them where the best chow mein in town is, then he will try to eat the soup with his chopsticks.

Of course you have the right idea. But Bush has facilitated our enormous debt to China, which means the Chinese government has us by the balls. So we are in no position to be making any demands -- or even firm requests.

Unless I am mistaken, but don't the Chinese government alread "own" us thanks to the money the Bush Adminsitration has already borrowed from them? Reason Bush doesn't want to insult them. I also find it curious that most of the world except for the U.S. govnerment was getting on the Chinese about their polution problem all these months leading up to the Olympics. Bush has not just been quiet on the subject, I don't recall him or his administration ever commenting on it.
