I thought "Alien Vs Predator" did a great job of breathing new life into the franchise.
The sequel, "Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem" would have been better if they left the teenagers out of it.

I had a major problem with the retcon Alien Vs. Predator did. Predator stated that the predators only came to earth to hunt during the hottest of summers, so obviously they hated the cold. So why would they go to Antarctica? Didn't make any sense to me.

I'm into sequelae lately. Just finihsed the Alien series of the Director's cut of each film.

Alien = 4 stars (out of 4); the addition of Dallas' cocooning is very creepy- worth the watch
Aliens = 3 stars; some plot holes, more toys for the boys
Alien3 = 2 stars; the Director's cut features the little dweeb eating its way out of a dead ox so not so offensive
Alien4 = 1 star; put it back in the can- acting and dialog not improved

alien = 3 stars

aliens = 4 stars (best sequel ever. bar none)

first terminator - best sci-fi ever.

man from earth = a pretty decent movie considering.

for tv series try, dexter.

Last night, pulled out Sabrina, the Billy Wilder original with Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, William Holden. It sent me all over again.

Linus Larrabee: [slow dancing with Sabrina] How do you say in French my sister has a yellow pencil?
Sabrina Fairchild: Ma soeur a un crayon jaune.
Linus Larrabee: How do you say my brother has a lovely girl?
Sabrina Fairchild: Mon frère a une gentille petite amie.
Linus Larrabee: And how do you say I wish I were my brother?

IMDb: Sabrina (1954)

Giant balloon foils record breaking 130,000ft skydive bid

(What's this?)It is more a case of reach for the tie than reach for the sky... as Michael Fournier's giant helium balloon drifts off without him.

Yesterday was the THIRD time the Frenchman's bid to skydive from a record breaking 130,000 ft was foiled by bad luck.

The balloon came away from his capsule before lift-off in Saskatchewan, Canada - leaving Fournier, 64, feeling deflated.

Q: "What are your plans for movies?"

PAUL: "We've got to do a new one in February. Februar-ar-ary. There aren't... we haven't made any plans for it as yet. We talked to the director."

Q: "No plans?"

PAUL: "No, nothing."

GEORGE: "No title, no script."

Mortal Thoughts (1991)

I stumbled across this movie ten years on cable. Demi Moore, Bruce Willis, Harvey Keitel and the always wonderful Glenne Headley. Mystery, suspense and strong characters make this a movie with emotional depth that is just as good on the small screen as at the cineplex.

Great film, "Mortal Thoughts." This was Demi's first produced film. Saw it in the pictures. More like a Lifetime movie but grittier.

Demi has made a name for herself. I admire her tremendously.

I just learned today that Sid Sheinberg produced an entirely separate edit of Terry Gilliam's Brazil that is radically different. Making inquiries to see where I can possibly get my hands on it.

Meanwhile, Terry is doing his usual manic act to finish Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus after Heath Ledger's death in mid-shooting. Folks, this is a reunion of Gilliam and McKeown, who co-wrote Brazil with Tom Stoppard, so methinks this, along with Johnny Depp in the lead, is going to be a landmark film.

I happen to be one of those who really loved The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen and The Brothers Grimm, so will be a highly anticipated treat for me to see Terry Gilliam and Johnny Depp in collaboration.

Can't wait.

Sex and The City, took the mater for her birthday. Don't think it's any major contribution to world cinema, but it sent me. So much fun to see those four together again, remarkable chemistry. Barring Candice Bergen's house-shaking Line of The Decade, La Cattrall had the best one-liners, Her Nixonity the most conflicted emotionalism, Ms. Davis the biggest character laughs, and, oh my goodness, that Sarah Jessica Parker has matured into a first-rate actress. Could have been a trifle shorter, Baby Jen Hudson was wonderful but underused as assistant Louise from St. Louis, and roughly half the couture made me woozy. Will also never look at sushi quite the same way. And I was hardly prepared for -- well, I'm not telling. You have to see it yourself. The girls are doing just fine.

Sex and The City...

Prepare for heresy.

Lessee, here. Cattrall? Always too obvious, too loud, works it too hard, and too self-impressed while remaining cripplingly insecure for my tastes. Nixon? Redhead. They're all insane, no exceptions. And if you're a redhead who's offended, you're probably about to prove me right. SJP, so sorry - long over THAT. (Hot in those white shorts in 1991's "LA Story" and white pants in 1992's "Honeymoon in Vegas," though) Frightfully self-aware without a modicum of insight. Finds herself far more adorable and desirable than I do.

Oops. Trouble in Paradise was Paramount. My bad.

Norwood (1970) Attempting to cash in on Glen Campbell and Kim Darby's chemistry in "True Grit," as well as Campbell's affinity for younger women, Norwood is a tale of two-would-be lovers and an Edsel. The Edsel steals the show. Campbell sings the title song as well.

Ironman Pretty good movie. :D Strong actors, good plot, well executed. What's not to like.

Highly recommended.

What made this movie so incredible is that the actors and Production took what was basically comic-book super hero boiler-plate script and elevated it to the level of Shakespeare. Plus you add the fact that the movie did this by pure strength of acting ability, the skill of the director and respect for the source material--the Iron Man comic books this movie was based on. . Production didn't try to make the movie too cutesy or too campy.

Some recent purchases:

Holocaust, NBC miniseries from 1978 which I don't remember seeing at all. Bought this as soon as it came out but my trip to "south Georgia" interrupted my viewing of it. Starring Meryl Streep, James Woods before they were household names. Helps to have some knowledge about the Holocaust, but I'm sure there were plenty of references I missed. Pretty amazing and recommended

"Andrzej Wajda, Three War Films", Criterion box set. Includes Kanal, about the Warsaw Uprising

Schindler's List, already seen but finally bought

And Big Lots had a massive sale of DVD's for $3. Got the following:

For Love of Ivy, Sidney, and Abbey Lincoln

One Day in September, documentary, narr by ikcy Michael Douglas, on 1972 Munich Olympics

To Live and Die in LA Dafoe and Turtrro, two of my faves

Vertical Limit in Superbit (usually a $27 movie)

Colgate Comedy Classics: Martin and Lewis 5 episodes including the one with Dorothy Dandridge! Never know what you'll find in the sale bins.

The Fall of the House of Usher, yep, the Vincent Price classic.

It's a good thing I was pressed for time when flipping through the Big Lots DVDs because I probably would have needed a 2nd suitcase to bring home all I found.

Now comes the fun part: making room for all of this in my already-topped-off DVD shelves :/

I watched this film today, Moliere with Romain Duris in the title role:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3uZNnub0Xo

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0796335/

The film covers a period of months in 1643 when Moliere was released from debtor's prison and later turned up touring the provinces with his Illustrious Theatre Troupe. For anyone familiar with his work, this is a delight. For those not familiar, the story incorporates many elements of his later comedies and stands alone as a funny, human story of love, sacrifice and the true wellsprings of art. I'm watching again in a half hour or so on the Starz west coast feed.

For those who enjoyed the guilty pleasure that is "The Lost Boys," the sequel, "The Lost Boys: The Tribe" offers everything a sequel should. Better effects, more gore, more sex, and more humor. Luna Bay is as decrepit as it ever was. Corey Feldman doing his best growling Rambo-cum-vampire hunter just cracked me up. Angus Sutherland may not have a chance to show off his skills as a serious actor in this comic book-like flick; but he does a good turn as the sleazy, arrogant head vampire. Vampire surfers! I loved that film - seems like I'm the only one. IMHO, Gilliam is a marvelous director, on par with George Pal, Tim Burton, George Stevens and Francois Truffaut.

I understand his Emporium of Dr Parnassus will likely get released despite Heath Ledger's death during production.

Have you seen Gilliam's Brazil and The Meaning of Life? IMO, Brazil is a landmark film, like Hitchcock's Vertigo.

The real Charlie Wilson:
QUOTE
Indeed, Charlie Wilson loves life in general. The U.S. Naval Academy grad and Navy veteran was elected to Congress in 1972, a Democrat bucking the Nixon landslide, and quickly became known for his high-living escapades, which earned him the nickname "Good Time Charlie," and shrewd accumulation of political chits.

His savvy came in handy in the early '80s, when Wilson, a staunch anti-Communist, decided to help Afghan rebels in their war against the invading Soviet Union. Over several years, working behind the scenes, his efforts to raise funding through his defense subcommittee, to establish a bond with a CIA agent named Gust Avrakotos (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film) and to negotiate support from Middle Eastern countries helped the Afghans take the upper hand -- and eventually forced the Soviets out of the country.

Asked what led to the Soviet departure, Pakistani leader Gen. Muhammad Zia ul-Haq was blunt: "Charlie did it," he told "60 Minutes."

Henry V This is the 1989 version. I like it a lot. It can be a little hard to follow iambic pentameter but the story is well acted. Kenneth Braunaugh was brilliant in his role as Henry, but all the roles were well done.

I guess asking British actors to do a good job in a Shakespeare play is asking them to do something they feel they have been born to do.

There was one segment that stuck in my mind. The English side looked warily at the dawn before the battle whereas the French looked eagerly for the day of the battle. My guess is that Shakespeare wanted to introduce the element of experience over inexperience.

If you look at the battle of Agincourt, this might have been overstated. But the movie and history indicates a decisive victory.
