Full Version: Business Week's Brian Grow was a hero in this terrible practice

Brian Grow, writer for Business Week just spotted an ad while riding a bus and started investigating. As a result, he helped a lot of people.

He was featured on Moyers' show last Friday.

One of the biggest problems is that these car lots like JD Byrider Lots do not state the price of the car, but wait to get all the information they can from the buyer, and then make up a price for the car.

Long story short, they bank on high interest, especially defaults and that's where they make the most money. This is their business model.

Because of Brian Grow and some helpful agencies a few of these people have been able to recoup their money.

The other part is non-profit hospitals have gotten into the business of selling their debt to these predators. You have to sign these predator papers before being admitted.

Video of show:

Business Week usually writes for corporations.

Glad Randi started with bankruptcy bill. It's all just so sick.

Then she posts on the real creeping-in of debtor's prisons. Check it out, before you vote for McCain for prezident.

This busines model takes in 650Billion dollars a year - taking advantage of people who have no money in the first place!!

All I want to know is, will there be any medical care available in debtor's prison? I'm one of those poor souls who had the nerve to get sick and ended up owing doctors $$$, mostly because my insurance company would only cover a portion of the bill, and so the doctors came after me for the balance. And yes, most of them want at least $200 a month.

Not from what I've read. They're just interested in making us better nazis like them. Debtors' prison is your best friend, my friend (straight out of the mouth of the McPainster). Debtors' prison will motivate you NOT to be lazy. I can just hear it now.

Just one more reason to shut out idiot McPain in November.

I hear ya. sad.gif

I THINK there is help to get those payments down. I'll look around.

Good to see you here again Easilyannoyed. smile.gif

I saw this link in a blog post the other day...tacky website but this guy has quite a good reputation as a consumer advocate and has lots of tips on his site.
A lot of people are in a pickle these days, having maxed out their credit cards etc. I don't have to worry about that...cause I don't have any...can't afford any...and I had better learn to love rice.

I always read Business Week - a great source of info.

I often cite BW articles here on RRMB.

Anyone want to try to deny that we are in the middle of open class warfare?
The usury laws in this country went bye-bye during the first Reagan Misadministration.
Change we can believe in? Obama and a Democratic House and Senate, reinstate the usury laws within his first 100 days of office.

Tore up credit cards a long time ago. I used to out of desperation (while in school with baby to support) take out one of those pay-day loans, but I always paid it off (391% interest) as quickly as possible. Now I'm really worried for my daughter and her student loans. sad.gif

Don't worry. At the current rate at which cost-of-living exceeds real wages, the economy will collapse and the US will break up like the old USSR by 2010. The party she owes money will likely cease to exist, especially if she moves to one of the former parts of the US that refuses to honor mutual financial treaties.

IMO, debtors should be actively working to break the US up.

Here's what Byrider was doing in Cinci-sippi. They had a lot on the far east side of town and I saw a nice-looking cheap car while I was working one day. I went back to check it out and was told that I had to go to the lot that was closer to my house. Company policy stated I couldn't buy at that location. Honest to God.

YES!!!!

The caller who said, WHAT CAN WE DO??? Well, organizing is what they hate. So I love doing what they hate so much.

And Randi's saying fight back. These asshats count on everyone being beaten down and depressed - that's their business model. Let them know you know your rights!!! Contact your AG, real consumer credit counselors WHO ARE FREE - not the bogus counselors who charge - just another gimmick to steal. This is wholesale fraud.

I sure would like to see some Robin Hood types pop up right now. Adamquestor is a candidate, I think. smile.gif

Nah... just logical. It seems to me that it's not ORGANIZING that they are afraid of so much as it is DISORGANIZING (pulling the rug out from under them). If we, as a people, abandon the idea of a united nation, their power immediately fades. If we, as a people, absolutely deny loyalty to a national entity (tell Washington to fuck off) and give our exclusive loyalty to a local entity, they will not be able to cope.

Imagine if a local entity, say the Pacific Republic, issues its own stable currency, backed by local equity, for immediate exchange with unstable (falling) dollars. As it stands, California is the 6-7th largest planetary economy; joined by Nevada, Oregon and Washington, it's likely the 5-6th largest. This makes the new entity self-supporting. Not much can be done to reverse this trend as the US (Washington's) economy fades into obscurity.

The American people are being screwed by 536 people who are being lobbied to death. It's time we did something, and I smell a tipping point.

Actually, it was revoked during the Carter Administration. Carter believed it'd cause people to save more. dry.gif

"Mr. Greider, the author of “Secrets of the Temple: How the Federal Reserve Runs the Country,” responded: “To make the story overly crude, the [U.S.] Congress repealed the law against usury. It was done in 1980 by a Democratic Congress, [with a] Democratic President, [Jimmy Carter] and of course, the Republicans all piled on and voted for it. And that was the ‘first stroke,’ only the first of many, in which they ‘stripped away’ the regulatory laws from the financial system and from banking...They set up a political climate, [that shouted] ‘let’s get government out of the way.’ And that was very appealing as framed by [President] Ronald Reagan and other conservatives.”

In defense of ACORN.

QUOTE
ACORN President Maude Hurd released the following statement today in response to the McCain campaign's new ad claiming that, among other things, ACORN is responsible for the mortgage crisis:

”For almost a decade, ACORN, a community organization of 400,000 families in neighborhoods across the country, has been fighting against the predatory lending practices that have robbed our members of their homes, destabilized neighborhoods, and roiled the global economy.”

“In his newest ad, John McCain’s campaign bizarrely claims, “ACORN forced banks to issue risky home loans, the same types of loans that caused the financial crisis we're in today.” Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, ACORN has worked successfully to help working class families get good home loans on fair terms from legitimate banks and has fought vigorously against predatory lenders who have ripped off families in our communities. These predatory loans caused the crisis.”

“For more than a decade, ACORN members have held protests, released reports, and advocated for regulations to protect homeowners from predatory lenders. ACORN organizers and volunteers have been working day and night to help victims of the GOP economic meltdown to save their homes from foreclosure. In fact, ACORN has brought class action lawsuits against several predatory lenders, and has lobbied the Federal Reserve and Congress in support of regulations against predatory lending. ACORN has even been successful in convincing many lenders to treat homeowners more fairly and help families be able to make their mortgage payments and save their homes.”
