For Senator Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. to insinuate that his feet are in the right place—while standing next to Senator Barack (Dare I say: Hussein?) Obama—means, says, keeps suggesting, signifying much, as I dwell on his quote of Abraham Lincoln. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/23/o...i_n_120798.html
I cannot say that I have been surprised by the racial revelations that have appeared due to the candidacy of Barack Obama. In spite of—or maybe even because of—the many white friends, relatives, and acquaintances that I have accumulated, I am well aware of the spectrums of primal, visceral fear and negativity that white American individuals can experience (or not) at the mere sight of an African-American male.
Prior to the Obama candidacy, the phenomenon of white Americans harboring internalized animosity and various degrees of unacceptance concerning black males was said to be mostly just a thing of the “south”: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi? South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas? Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia? Florida, Kentucky, West Virginia? Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio? Kansas?? Utah???
In places other than the “south”, such anti black male sentiment was said to be: “Just ignorance.., …that’s all.” Whether any black male experienced the coincidental crossing of the street or the sudden locking of the car door, the threatening hints in polite circles or the N-word being shouted out by someone in a passing car, for some strange, bizarre reason, such “ignorance” was not supposed to mean anything unless it was connected to a Klan rally or to the commission of a hate crime.
What I have always known, however, is that white Americans—who even ever so slightly fear, hate, or have some sort of ingrained disregard for black males..: …they are, and always have been, all over America. They are doctors, lawyers, cops, robbers, pastors, deadbeats, the girl next door, and pissed off Hillary supporters. In fact, it appears evident that there are even black Americans who share a congruency with, at the least, the recognition and intense alert response that can apparently be attributed to, a higher percentage of, white Americans in reaction to the relatively sudden close spatial proximity to an unknown black male.
Such white Americans (and even one or two of the black ones) will never vote for Obama. Barack could rescue one of them from a burning car or save one of their children from being swept away by the deep, muddy, rapidly moving waters of a flash flood, and they still would not be able to bring themselves to vote for him due to the color of his skin.
Joe Biden has courageously added considerable risk to his life by proclaiming to plant is feet and stand with Obama. That risk will dramatically increase should Joe stand firm with an Obama who happens to stand firm for the people.
Good luck, you two. As divided as Americans are, you may well be America’s last hope.
