I just heard on the television that it will make land fall in New Orleans on Thursday. I'm trying to verify it. This is the closest I've come so far.

Hurricane Gustav to Become Gulf Coast Monster?

The once and future Hurricane Gustav—currently a tropical storm over Haiti—could attack the U.S. Gulf Coast as a major hurricane this weekend. Or not.

The Gulf Coast's fate depends largely on a developing high-pressure system, whose southern edge extends roughly from the eastern Gulf of Mexico to the western Atlantic Ocean. (See a map of the region.)

High-pressure "ridges" repel storms, so if the developing ridge north of Cuba is strong, Gustav could be deflected westward and into the central Gulf of Mexico, where vast stretches of warm water could supercharge the storm as it heads for the U.S. coast.

But if the high-pressure system wanes, Gustav could turn north, unimpeded, and move overland, across Cuba. The temporary lack of contact with warm water would deprive it of power.

From Storm to Hurricane to Storm … to Hurricane?

Gustav began as a tropical depression in the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday and quickly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane with winds of about 90 miles (145 kilometers) an hour.

Gustav hit shore Tuesday in Haiti and has been blamed for at least 17 deaths there and the neighboring Dominican Republic.

The passage over Haiti's mountains weakened Gustav's winds to about 60 miles (100 kilometers) an hour, reducing it to tropical storm status.

As of Wednesday morning, the center of Gustav was nearly stationary over Haiti. But the storm is expected to start moving westward later in the day. That would put it over the very warm waters of the Caribbean, and forecasters think Gustav will quickly regain its status as a Category 1 hurricane, with wind speeds between 74 and 95 miles an hour (119 and 153 kilometers an hour).

By early Saturday, Gustav is predicted to be just off the coast of western Cuba as a Category 3 hurricane, with winds between 110 and 130 miles (177 and 209 kilometers) an hour.

Where it goes from there—and how intense it becomes—is less certain.

BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal issued the following letter to the federal government requesting a pre-landfall federal disaster declaration in preparation for Hurricane Gustav, which could potentially make landfall in Louisiana by early next week. Governor Jindal has already declared a state of emergency:

August 27, 2008

The President

The White House

Washington, D.C.

Through: Regional Director

FEMA Region VI

800 North Loop

Denton, TX

Dear Mr. President:

Under the provisions of Section 401 of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, 42 U.S.C. Sections 5121-5206 (Stafford Act), and implemented by 44 CFR Section 206.36, Subparts B and C, I request that you declare a major disaster declaration for the state of Louisiana as a result of Hurricane Gustav effective August 27, 2008. According to the National Weather Service, Hurricane Gustav is projected to strike the eastern coastal parishes of Louisiana. The state began emergency protective measures on August 27, 2008, and is continuing.

In response to the situation, I have taken appropriate action under state law and have declared a state-wide state of emergency on August 27, 2008. Furthermore, I have directed the execution of the State Emergency Plan on that day in support of the state-wide emergency declaration in accordance with Section 401 of the Stafford Act. A copy of the declaration of the state of emergency is attached.

I anticipate that the effects of the storm will overwhelm the capability of state resources and it is necessary that critical pre-positioning and other readiness requirements be provided through federal assistance. I request that federal resources be activated to assist with the evaluation of the incident and sheltering operations.

New Orleans braces for hurricane on Katrina anniversary

Source

As it prepares to mark the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has been forced to draw up an emergency evacuation plan to deal with tropical storm Gustav, which is was predicted to reach hurricane strength in the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm has already killed 22 people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic and today it moved away from the Central American coast and into the Caribbean.

The eye of the storm was expected to pass Jamaica today as it sweeps towards the United States. The National Hurricane Centre in Miami predicts that it will grow in power as it approaches Louisiana over the weekend.

US National Guard troops are standing by as residents prepare to mark the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Ray Nagin, the mayor of New Orleans, left the Democratic National Convention in Denver to return home for the preparations.

Some of the residents, who were displaced personally or knew victims of Katrina, were watching the weather forecast with trepidation.

“I’m panicking,” said Evelyn Fuselier of Chalmette, whose home was submerged in 14 feet of floodwater when Katrina hit.

Ms Fuselier returned to her house exactly one year ago, and now she is terrified that her ordeal could be repeated: “I keep thinking: Did the Corps fix the levees? Is my house going to flood again? Am I going to have to go through all this again?”

Totally ironic.

Don't gloat.

This totally sucks. I wanted to watch the repugs try to have a convention. They just got let off the hook. Now they can play government while they do nothing as usual.

There's a difference between gloating and noting, as Randi Herself did on Friday's show, expressing concern for the once-more-imperiled Gulf Coast and acknowledging the karmic irony of the Republican Party's scramble-to-redress during its scheduled convention. Candles continue lit for family, friends, RRMB members and citizens in the wake of Gustav, with Hanna building steam right behind him.
