Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin faces state probe, nixing McCain VP rumors

Alaska doesn't get much news coverage, stuck way up in the northwest there on the shortest route to Asia. Not unless there's some crime (see the federal indictment of Sen. Ted Stevens this week) or the eternal congressional fight over drilling for oil in an unprotected corner of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Recently, there have also been some murmurs about its telegenic, reformist Republican governor, Sarah Palin, as a possible long shot for vice presidential running mate with Sen. John McCain.

The 44-year old mother of five earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda" for her intensity as a high school basketball player, a nickname some political opponents have kept alive in adult times. She doesn't seem to mind.

The well-spoken politician won election in 2006 as a reformer and was quickly seen as a rising star in Republican political circles.

There was even a "Draft Sarah Palin for Vice President" movement or, at the very least, a website, despite her claims that a spot on the national ticket was not in the cards "this time around."

She's doing all right with Alaskan voters too, enjoying envious statewide popularity ratings somewhere above 80%.

But now Palin is also caught in a probe of her official conduct that likely nixes whatever chance she had to be on the McCain ticket. She's only been a governor for two years, but that's about four times as long as someone else mentioned as GOP VP pick, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

However, questions have now arisen over whether Palin used her office to try and fire her ex -brother-in-law from a state trooper's position. Palin asserts the charge is untrue, but the Alaska Senate this week approved the hiring of an independent investigator to look into the allegation.
Our colleague Frank James over at the Swamp has more details on this governor we're likely to hear more about in coming years.

Maybe the Republicans offered her this chance to escape the impeachment in Alaska. Screw the country, but save Sarah.

Interesting question. Joe is smarter, more knowledgeable, especially through experience, and has much more heart than McCain's pick.

She has worked on balancing a state budget two years in a row. Those two years of executive experience are two more years of executive experience than Senator Obama has.

Besides, Senator Obama isn't using the buzzword of "experience". He uses the words "Change" and "Hope".

Perhaps street artist Shepard Fairey will be as inspired by Governor Palin running for Vice President as he is for Senator Obama running for President. Maybe he'll paint a version of his ubiquitious Hope graphic featuring Governor Palin as an inspiration to us all .................. ?

Change and Hope.

Yes. This is the core of the "why her" (the ones who own McCain/Bush) and her being a woman is icing on the cake in McCain world.

This will backfire on Gramps.

Iveatch---Balancing the budget of Alaska is a hard thing? Really? There's like 500,000 people in the whole state, they pay taxes, so put the money where it belongs instead of into the hands of corps. Also, the repigs have been in charge of Alaska forever, so why is the budget out of whack in the first place if they know so much. The trith is, Alaska is screwed up because of the repigs, not because of the dems.

I was just watching an earlier interview with Palin on C-SPAN ... the last question was about the Polar Bear emblem she was wearing on her blazer during the interview. She went on about how she was on her way later to hear the results of a science study to determine if the Polar Bear should be put on the endangered species list. She seemed to be saying that there needed to be "good science" on which to base this decision and this report would provide that "good science".

So, what happened?

State will sue over polar bear listing, Palin says

Not only that, but she also seems to have lied about the actual results of the report, saying that it supported her belief that there was no evidence for the need to put the bears on the endangered species list ...
QUOTE
A newly released e-mail from last fall shows that Alaska's own biologists were at odds with the administration of Gov. Sarah Palin, which has consistently opposed any new federal protections for polar bears under the Endangered Species Act.
Click here to find out more!

The state's in-house dispute seems to refute later statements by Gov. Sarah Palin that a "comprehensive review" of the federal science by state wildlife officials found no reason to support an endangered-species listing for the northern bears. The governor invoked the state's own scientific work both in a cover letter to the state's official polar bear comments, and in an opinion piece published in the New York Times.

But the Oct. 9 e-mail, which was released this month to a University of Alaska scientist who had filed a public records request seeking information on the state's polar bear decision-making, shows that the head of the marine mammals program for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and two other staff biologists agreed with the conclusions of nine polar bear studies that the federal government was citing to justify a threatened-species listing for the bears.

Another "honest" Republican ... who'd a guessed.

Now wouldn't THAT be interesting to know? How many potential candidates turned down McCain's offer?

Hell, maybe it WAS Ridge or Romney until about 11pm Eastern time last night, at which time both men switched off C-Span and then politely declined, citing heavy schedules and the desire to spend more time with their families.

Her "experience" wouldn't be an issue had McCain not made it one.

The issue here isn't here lack of experience as such, it's the McCain hypocrisy of demanding experience from Obama and then putting inexperience one heartbeat away from the oval office.

This is much more an issue of McCain's judgment and honesty than it is of Palin's experience.

The division of Iraq is what the people in Iraq want. They want their sects like they had it before we and England got involved. The state issue you are making fun of happens to be the provinces of America. They too get to vote in our primaries, just in case you did not know.

We went from a deficit halted and peace time, to 4 trillion dollars spent, thousands killed, the middle east is a mess, the Russians are all pissed off, China is ready to take to the 7 seas and space. Korea appreciates their nukes by the way. So now a repug is going to tell me that they know how to fix this mess. They promised to bring honor back to a White House that was used as a Whore House. So you call this progress? At least while Bill was whore chasin we had a Constitution and 3 equal branches of government, and the rule of law was adhered to. I would find some flies and practice your torture techniques.

that might be the most innacurate statement i have read on the internet this year...

but, there is no rule here against making absurd statements...i understand the panic you are in, I was watching letterman and his guy at the rnc convention doing a report mentioned that off camera the repubs there are all very nervous and know that palin is a short lived bump and they are in trouble

that isnt a statement in fact, just something i heard....

so, are you one of those who says you prefer the experience and judgment of sarah palin re war and foreign affairs and finger on the button to biden? go ahead, say it...
