General Ricardo Sanchez appeared on the Charlie Rose Show tonight to talk about his new book.
He admitted that the torture (my word) that occurred at Abu Ghraib, which he acknowledged was totally unacceptable, was the result of the policy decision made at the highest levels of government in 2002 to "take off the gloves" and abandon the Geneva conventions that had been US policy for 60 years. He also said that problems resulting from this new policy became apparent to top leadership very quickly in Afghanistan. However, little to nothing was done about it because, he feels, the country was headed toward war in Iraq. He said that there were abuses being conducted from the time of the very beginning of our engagement in Iraq, with investigations and court martials being conducted.
