The Worst Vice-Presidential Nominee in U.S. HistoryThere was a TV ad for deodorant that said, "Never let them see you sweat."
The John McCain campaign has just showed the world that it is drenched.
...
No doubt John McCain will get some women to vote for him who wouldn't have otherwise, and even some independents. But he will also probably lose as many Republicans uncomfortable with a woman on the ticket - let alone a woman with so little experience as Sarah Palin. Not to mention that the choice will cause many undecided Democratic women to be aghast and push them back to following their Democratic beliefs. And further, it will lose all the independents who look at the GOP ticket and say "This is who I'm supposed to give my vote for the next four years to lead and protect America??" It may even appeal to right-wing evangelicals for her strong pro-life stance and get some to vote - but that position and others related to it are specifically what loses even more women voters. And men.
Ultimately, the nomination will lose far, far more votes than it gains. ...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-j-eli...i_b_122491.html I prefer actual facts as opposed to some left wing spin. This is from Zogby's online poll, so not quite the best evidence but definitely more scientific than one liberal writers opinion.
Overall, 52% said the selection of Palin as the GOP vice presidential nominee helps the Republican ticket, compared to 29% who said it hurt. Another 10% said it made no difference, while 10% were unsure. Among independent voters, 52% said it helps, while 26% said it would hurt. Among women, 48% said it would help, while 29% said it would hurt the GOP ticket. Among Republicans, the choice was a big hit - as 87% said it would help, and just 3% said it would hurt.
Pollster John Zogby: "Palin is not to be underestimated. Her real strength is that she is authentic, a real mom, an outdoors person, a small town mayor (hey, she has dealt with a small town city council - that alone could be preparation for staring down Vladimir Putin, right?). She is also a reformer."
"A very important demographic in this election is going to be the politically independent woman, 15% of whom in our latest survey are undecided."

I am a regular poster and contributor to a number of women's boards on the internet.
Most of them are boards full of Moms and Grandmoms who talk about a whole slew of other things that are important to their day-to-day life, like when did your kid start walking, or how long should it be taking to potty train, which type of floor is easier to clean, laminate or tile, that sort of thing.
These boards have a ton of topics, from entertainment threads, child rearing threads, shopping and money-saving idea threads, school issues, including homeschooling, book clubs, gardening, crafts, you name it.
The political threads are usually few and far between and the posts there are generally tentative, because most of these women do not want to "offend" each other and instinctively know that politics can be a hot potato among casual friends.
To a woman, this nomination choice has shocked and disappointed them! Many were leaning towards McCain because they are basically low-information voters (just scanning their boards, you can see that). They buy into the Maverick label and tentatively buy into the idea that he is stronger on security, they even admit that his being a POW is relevant in this election. But they just can't seem to really articulate why. It's a "gut reaction," "Mother's Intuition" thing with them.
McCain just burnt up all that currency.
Other than one or two who post their husband's comments, almost every other woman on all those boards has just been pushed into the Obama column. These are stay-at-home moms, empty-nesters, work-outside-the-home moms, homeschoolers, work-from-home moms, step-moms, mothers with special needs kids, grandmothers, grandmothers raising their grandkids, single moms, college-educated women, women with no higher education, you name it. While most are white, they do represent a variety of ethnic backgrounds as well. They are, for the most part, religious (not a single thread doesn't contain at least one "god bless you" or "I'll be praying for you" comment).
It's still tentative, but thank god McCain did this. I have now been trying my darnedest to turn these women into "higher information" voters and posting links to his various speeches, to the 60 Minutes interview, to many other items that they would not have either sought out on their own or taken the time to see otherwise.
Thank you, McCain.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
