This from a 2006 Alaska gubernatorial questionnaire that was published in the Eagle Forum Alaska.

Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?

SP: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.

========================================================

The Pledge of Allegiance was first recited in 1892, the year it was first written. The author was Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister from New York. Bellamy was also a chairman of a committee of state superintendents of education in the National Education Association.

Public schools all around the country were preparing a celebration in honor of the 400th anniversary of Columbus Day. Bellamy wanted a special celebration, and he wanted to center it around a flag-raising ceremony and salute. With this in mind, he wrote his pledge:

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Notice the words "my flag." They stayed this way in the Pledge until 1924, when a National Flag Conference announced that the words "my flag" would be changed to "the flag of the United States of America."

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

The Pledge stayed this way until 1954, when Congress added the words "under God." This was the final change, giving the Pledge its current wording:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

There's an earlier thread on it here somewhere that includes the links. Here 'tis.

I like the OP's note, "a female George Bush."

Then he/she should have run for governor in Idaho...where the potatoes are...

Oh, wait....

Sarah Palin was born in Idaho, and later went to college there.

You mean the Founding Fathers weren't around in 1954?

Thank Eisenhower for that.
The founders of the Evangelical-American seizure were....Billy Graham, Oral Roberts, etc. They rode on the backs of the McCarthy "anti communism" people.

Exactly true. I like to "think" that if Eisenhower hadn't had to worry about the backlash in that environment, would have vetoed it. In all likelihood, the veto would have been overridden... I can hear the wackos now: "why do you hate God?"

Yeah we know we're the laughing-stock once agian. Idaho has had Helen Chenoweth, Larry Craig, Bill Sali and now Sarah Palin.
It's not really our fault that Alaskans made her governor and McSame the VP candidate but she is from here.
As far as the pledge goes. We won two world wars without "under god" in there. I always point that fact out if this subject comes up.

This really is fab!

We can look forward to lots of pointed questions from the media about this and the whole panoply of yet-to-be-discovered clear evidence of her total cluelessness, hopefully, even from right wingers ... those with a mature conscience who KNOW this person is a miserable pick for our country and are just embarrassed that she's even being considered.

Wow!!! What an idiot. I didn't even have to reference this, I already knew it. I guess she's not a big reader of history. I believe it was in 1957 that God was added. But still, if I'm wrong the year, I'm right on the decade, which is more than I can say about Tall and Pale.

To the minor point on the title of the thread ... I don't think she can quit. Doing so would be the end of her political career and the end of McCain's chances. They have to bluff their way through the election, for the next 2 months.
