The repigs are really messing this one up. I think Karl dropped the magic 8 ball, and is playing by ear on this one.

Is this another Harriet Myers style bait-and-switch?

Pawlenty and Romney seemed pissed that they weren't picked.

I'm betting it'll be Joe LIEberman by the end of the month.

Two page article from the NYTimes

QUOTE
On Monday morning, Ms. Palin and her husband, Todd, issued a statement saying that their 17-year-old unmarried daughter, Bristol, was five months pregnant and that she intended to marry the father.

uAmong other less attention-grabbing news of the day: it was learned that Ms. Palin now has a private lawyer in a legislative ethics investigation in Alaska into whether she abused her power in dismissing the state’s public safety commissioner; that she was a member for two years in the 1990s of the Alaska Independence Party, which has at times sought a vote on whether the state should secede; and that Mr. Palin was arrested 22 years ago on a drunken-driving charge.

Further on in the article:

QUOTE
People familiar with the process said Ms. Palin had responded to a standard form with more than 70 questions. Although The Washington Post quoted advisers to Mr. McCain on Sunday as saying Ms. Palin had been subjected to an F.B.I. background check, an F.B.I. official said Monday the bureau did not vet potential candidates and had not known of her selection until it was made public.

.........snip...........

In Alaska, several state leaders and local officials said they knew of no efforts by the McCain campaign to find out more information about Ms. Palin before the announcement of her selection, Although campaigns are typically discreet when they make inquiries into potential running mates, officials in Alaska said Monday they thought it was peculiar that no one in the state had the slightest hint that Ms. Palin might be under consideration.

“They didn't speak to anyone in the Legislature, they didn't speak to anyone in the business community,” said Lyda Green, the State Senate president, who lives in Wasilla, where Ms. Palin served as mayor.

Representative Gail Phillips, a Republican and former speaker of the State House, said the widespread surprise in Alaska when Ms. Palin was named to the ticket made her wonder how intensively the McCain campaign had vetted her.

“I started calling around and asking, and I have not been able to find one person that was called,” Ms. Phillips said. “I called 30 to 40 people, political leaders, business leaders, community leaders. Not one of them had heard. Alaska is a very small community, we know people all over, but I haven’t found anybody who was asked anything.”

Sounds like they were caught with their pants down.

Why do I have this really bad feeling that the top of the form read, "Welcome to the McDonald's Family! Please complete both sides of this form and submit it to the human resources director at Hamburger U!"

I think it's easier to become the Republican pick for
Vice President than it is to get on a plane these days!

Laura
AM I TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE 2ND IN COMMAND THINKS THAT HER STATE OF ALASKA SHOULD NOT BE PART OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA??!! wacko.gif blink.gif rofl.gif
GCurry
I don't know whether she believes in secession or self sufficiency for AK. I think secession not such a good idea, and self-sufficiency, to some degree, for all states probably is.

Self-sufficiency for AK is much easier since the state has a population density of about 1 person per square mile. Plenty of trees, wildlife, etc for a "rugged individual" to live off the land. But someone whose experience and politics were honed there probably doesn't have the perspective to manage areas, like Manhattan, with a density of closer to 70K/sq mi.
NoYards
Sure sounds like she's "the one" they talk about when they talk about the "necessity of infiltrating the major national parties in order to further the goals of the AIP." (DailyKos link above.)

Yes, this is another thing the "loonies on the intertubes" will have to force the MSM to take notice of, and they can do what they always do when the people show better judgment than those with so called "journalistic integrity" ... they will make the decision to report it all the while condemning the blogosphere for breaking this mean spirited story ... as though they had no choice on whether to report or let the story "die" as a "blogosphere conspiracy theory".
Starbuck
Who cares if Palin was never vetted. This strategic blunder by McCain gets better every day.
paracelsus
having (errr... perhaps even requiring) the fbi do a background check before an individual is allowed to pursue high office sounds like a good idea to you?

then what exactly is the point of an election?

this is just ridiculous.
