— Sarah Palin found some unlikely allies Wednesday as leading academics and even former top aides to Hillary Rodham Clinton endorsed the Republican charge that John McCain’s running mate has been subject to a sexist double standard by the news media and Democrats.

Georgetown University professor Deborah Tannen, who has written best-selling books on gender differences, said she agrees with complaints that Palin skeptics — including prominent voices in the news media — have crossed a line by speculating about whether the Alaska governor is neglecting her family in pursuit of national office.

“What we’re dealing with now, there’s nothing subtle about it,” said Tannen. “We’re dealing with the assumption that child-rearing is the job of women and not men. Is it sexist? Yes.”

“There’s no way those questions would be asked of a male candidate,” said Howard Wolfson a former top strategist for Clinton’s presidential campaign.

The sexism charge was hurled with new intensity Wednesday afternoon by McCain surrogates, all women, at a news conference just hours before made her acceptance speech here - a speech in which she said this about the media and Washington elite: "I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion - I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

Howard's a nitwit.

You want sexism? Look at some of the buttons worn by attendees of the GOP Convention.

Of course, they have got the whole premise of the issue back-assward.

I'm not the least surprised that bad losers like Wolfson, and an academic like Tannen (apparently clueless polically), would be out here spewing this crap.

Oh, look. Over there! Something shiny!

Maybe we should define sexism. Where's the line, because she's playing in the big game now and we don't want her raising her skirt every time someone makes a comment about her.

I hope Hillary comes out strong on the campaign trail. The Rethugs are trying to milk this sexism thing.

Of course! That's why nobody ever questioned Barack Obama's experience.

By the way...on a side note...isn't there a sort of a biological aspect to a mother staying with a very young baby as opposed to a man?

I believe she will. The Democrats are bidding their time this week, they just want to answer criticisms and keep it real, unlike the Republicans who tried to step all over the Democratic convention they will let them have their show but next week all hell breaks loose. wink.gif

Hate that fucker Wolfson, chariman of the Hillary 2012 effort.

Yeah, especially the "Hottest Governor from the Coolest State" swag.

Effin' hypocrites.

The disconnect is just unreal.

tokiku
whatever- they want to cry sexism- yet ...
1 - they have the "hottest vp from the coolest state" buttons at the RNC
2 - they pull all the women to be up front in the audience- using them as tools and marketing schemes
3 - they love to talk about that glass ceiling- certainly not letting ANY of us forget she is a woman- exploiting the issue
4 - and the fact that they are totally flirting with the hillary supporters- as if a woman will vote for her JUST b/c she is one

that's the difference- barack hardly ever talks about being black- not out of shame- but b/c he does not want THAT to be his defining issue.

Biden has been known to say some stupid things, and I think he might very well do that in the debate.

She is the least qualified person in the history of the nation to be put in this position....right after Obama, and he's running for president, not vice....

that dog wont hunt...JFK's primary qualifications for president wasnt experience, it was leadership qualities.

Biden is 1000 times smarter than she is or than most people on this board, I am not worried about him...

Obama is our next president...

I'm sorry,

Maybe I missed those interviews.

Which specific Democrats have asked the question regarding whether she can run with having 5 kids?

And other than the Republican pundits saying "people are saying," exactly who in the media has questioned whether she can run with having 5 kids?

I've tried my darnedest to find those and am coming up nil.

I was under the distinct impression that she WAS breast feeding.

One thing I noticed, and this is just an observation, however, that little one is always sleeping. Never really up and awake, and I've definitely never seen him cry or whimper.

He's either the most docile baby on the planet, or drugs are involved.

This is from Wiki:

"Breastfeeding at least once every two to three hours helps to maintain milk production. For most women, eight breastfeeding or pumping sessions every 24 hours keeps their milk production high.[10] Newborn babies may feed more often than this: 10 to 12 breastfeeding sessions every 24 hours is common, and some may even feed 18 times a day.[58] Feeding a baby on demand (sometimes referred to as "on cue"), may mean breastfeeding much more than the recommended minimum."

This seems VERY time-consuming to me.

Can any women with experience weigh in here?

You noticed that too!

I am a father, I know if my wife was in her position and we had a 4 month old I would be holding my baby not my daughter.

I don't care what anybody says, something about this family smells.

My wife breast fed both of our children while working full time. My assistant did it, my secratary did it and one of the ladies in admin did it with all four of her kids. It is very time consumming but it can be done. My wife had one of those dual electric pumps and pumped the milk out every four hours while at work. Put the milk in a freezer and save it for later. My wife breast fed our daughter for almost a year and my son for 10 months.

Link on the least qualified? I had a post earlier describing all of the "experience" of presidents and VP's with less experience a few days ago and several dozen had no experience in politics at all, including George Bush Sr.

Sr. had no experience? He had plenty. He was head of the CIA, ambassador to the UN and other posts that I can't remember.
