I have a good friend of mine in a mutual business relationship. We have never met, but talk and email almost daily. We have been talking about this election for over 6 months now and he has been a staunch Obama/democrat supporter. He just asked me if I knew one of his children was autistic. I didn't as it never came up. He stated that he listened to the speech last night and is now switching to McCain because of Palin's speech and advocy for special needs children. 2 votes, especialy from Maryland wont make a difference, but they were pretty staunch democrats and emailed me early today to tell me.

Either they're amazingly gullible, crazy, or not "staunch Democrats."

The Republicans want to do all they can to kill social help programs such as those geared toward children with special needs.

Anyone with the most rudimentary knowledge of the two parties knows that.

The McCain website must be running a special to get their supporters to go out to progressive forums today.

Incomprehensible.

I have a son 28 who is bipolar who can't afford the insurance, or drugs, to keep him symptom free. I am also the reluctant caregiver for my stepdaughter's son, special needs an on pre-school IEP for the last year. My stepson's oldest child is autistic.

I would never, NEVER turn the future of this country to McCain/Palin, and those like them whose lives seem driven by their own needs above all.

Your friend may want to vote for Palin because she has a Down syndrome child, but his mistake is in assuming that because he feels "like" her, that she would share. What is hers, is hers - every man for himself, and may the Devil take the hindmost - it's the Republican way.
Laura
I wouldn't worry too much about this...wait till more stuff comes out about Miss Palin.

You really should consider not posting this crap.

I'd bet nearly everyone on this board has your number by now. Republiplants are eventually very transparent....

Well, his wife works out of the house, he runs his business from his house and he has an autistic child. I think he is just your average voter who feels he has found someone that he can relate more directly to. I know when we're talking on the phone, he is constantly putting me on hold to take care of the kids, all young. How stauch a democrat is he? Not sure, but we talk politics a lot, thanks to me primarily, and he has never promoted a republican and always said he was an Obama supporter. He is not like most people here and think politics everyday, but I doubt many in the country do. Like I said, he lives in Maryland, so his switch won't mean much politically anyway, but just expressing the surpising email I received today, and wondering inside if she resonated that like with others in large numbers. Too early to say at this point.

I really like how you put that gcurry - it really hit home, because I've never understood how people who seem to have their heart open to their family can close it to everyone else. But putting it in terms of these people not sharing, not owning or even being aware of the concept of sharing, helps it make sense. Thanks smile.gif

Profile of the Sociopath

This website summarizes some of the common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths.

* Glibness and Superficial Charm

* Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

* Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."

* Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

* Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

* Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

* Incapacity for Love

* Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

* Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

* Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

* Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

* Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

* Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.

* Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

* Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

Other Related Qualities:

1. Contemptuous of those who seek to understand them
2. Does not perceive that anything is wrong with them
3. Authoritarian
4. Secretive
5. Paranoid
6. Only rarely in difficulty with the law, but seeks out situations where their tyrannical behavior will be tolerated, condoned, or admired
7. Conventional appearance
8. Goal of enslavement of their victim(s)
9. Exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim's life
10. Has an emotional need to justify their crimes and therefore needs their victim's affirmation (respect, gratitude and love)
11. Ultimate goal is the creation of a willing victim
12. Incapable of real human attachment to another
13. Unable to feel remorse or guilt
14. Extreme narcissism and grandiose
15. May state readily that their goal is to rule the world

(The above traits are based on the psychopathy checklists of H. Cleckley and R. Hare.)

NOTE: In the 1830's this disorder was called "moral insanity." By 1900 it was changed to "psychopathic personality." More recently it has been termed "antisocial personality disorder" in the DSM-III and DSM-IV. Some critics have complained that, in the attempt to rely only on 'objective' criteria, the DSM has broadened the concept to include too many individuals. The APD category includes people who commit illegal, immoral or self-serving acts for a variety of reasons and are not necessarily psychopaths.

Did you miss this at the bottom? selective quoting?

Actually, Obsidian Wings had this in a post too, but after looking at the itemized list, it isn't accurate. The reason it looks like the special school budget looks cut by $5 million is because they split off the largest program, into a separate line item, and increased total spending by about $1 million.

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/omb/07_OMB/budget/EED/index.htm (in 07 the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy was part of the special schools section)

http://gov.state.ak.us/omb/09_omb/budget/EED/index.htm (in 09 it is on its own).

McCain's overall education platform is disgusting, but this line of attack isn't accurate.

Palin vetoed many bills that called for help for people with special needs, including vetoing funds for a home for unwed mothers.

That's what makes me think that MOTR's friend might just be fictitious, or the particulars of his statement exaggerated. She said nothing about what she intended to do to advocate for special needs kids. No one with a functioning brain cell would switch their vote on an ambiguous promise like "you will have a friend and an advocate in the White House." For all they know she would intend to pump money into faith-based initiatives that promise to help special needs kids. She's certainly not going to help with the medical bills.
