ST. PAUL, Minn. - John McCain’s campaign is denying a tabloid report that vice president candidate Sarah Palin had an extramarital affair. "It’s a vicious lie," spokesman Steve Schmidt said.

The campaign is considering legal action, the senior adviser added.

The National Enquirer wrote in its edition dated Sept. 15 that Palin had an affair with a business associate of her husband, Todd Palin. He discovered the infidelity and dissolved the business, the article said. It attributed the allegation only to "an enemy" of the Alaska governor.

...

See, here's the thing. Republicans think nothing of telling vicious lies. In fact, it's part of what is valued. They think more highly of a fellow Republican if he's able to tell more extravagant lies about an opponent, which aren't unravelled until after election counting is done, when it can't be reversed. Republicans like to leave all options open. Lying is an option; it is never foreclosed.

Democrats, lately, are more principled. They refrain from outright lying, just to win elections. They think, perhaps naively, that the truth will set us free, and that is a Democratic Party goal. Setting us all free is anathema to Republicans.

Republicans are not used to an opponent which plays by their principles, which is to say none. Enter the National Observer. Hey, lies sell advertising. Especially if they're big lies, with sex and moral turpitude involved. And if those selfsame lies happen to perform a little of the greater good, well that's gravy.

Do these allegations have as much credibility as the allegations against Obama?

Now that you mention it, roborok, this "story" has been in the Inquirer off and on for the last couple years.

I didn't hear the White House putting out a statement that it's vicious lies.

I'm not saying that means it's true, by any means, what I'm saying is that they never felt compelled to address it because the rule is to just ignore those types of things and they will go away.

Unless of course, there is sometimes some kernel of truth somewhere, and they....don't.....want....any.....deeper.....look....???

Heeeeey!!!!!!

All I know is the Inquirer broke the true story about the Edwards affair.

They got it right with Edwards, and that doesn't necessarily mean they got it right this time with Palin, but it certainly is possible, given the Palin family history of stuffing the closets with skeletons.

Has anyone heard any fresh news on this?

I see alot of you concur with me in one area,
although I want too expand on it a little bit,
I actually don't care about Psycho Sara's personal life.
And with a "Public" record like hers, who needs to
go into her personnal affairs anyway?

BUT, I feel so vindicated by the fact that John McCain is
loosing his cool at a "Tabloid" for doing an "unflattering" story
about Sara Palin, yet it didn't bother him in the least
that HIS OWN PARTY has been AND STILL IS spreading
stories THAT HE KNOWS ARE FALSE about Barack
Obama!

I thank God that Barack Obama can still take the "high road",
while McCain gets a dose of HIS OWN MEDICINE! I believe
that is what we call poetic justice isn't it? Also "What goes
around comes around", and from The Bible, "Reap what you
sow".

While we are on the subject of God, we have to ask
James Dobson how his prayer request for the "Rain" curse
on Obama's convention worked out for him!
James Dobson has been silent lately, whats the
matter Mr. Dobson? Are you hiding from a bolt of
lightning?

I really hope these allegations about Sarah Palin are in fact true
