McCain Campaign Plans To Keep Palin Away From The Press

Yesterday, McCain adviser Nicole Wallace dismissed the fact that Gov. Sarah Palin has yet to take any questions from the press. “So what?” she scoffed. Today on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, campaign strategist Rick Davis suggested Palin might never sit down for an interview if, he said, it’s “in our best interest” to keep her away from the media:

SCARBOROUGH: Yesterday Nicole Wallace suggested that she was sitting right there and told Jay Carney of Time magazine ‘Sarah Palin doesn’t have to talk to you, she doesn’t’ have to talk to the press.’ … Can we expect Sarah Palin on Meet the Press and other one on one interviews throughout the course of this campaign?

DAVIS: We’re going to do whatever we think is the best to win. We have 60 days left and if we think it’s a good idea to go out there and do those shows, we’ll do them.

SCARBOROUGH: Can you avoid it? Meet the Press?

DAVIS: We can afford anything we want to do. … We’re going to do what we think is in our best interest. If that means access to the press, we’ll give it to you.

The McCain campaign reportedly told the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder not to expect any one-on-one interviews with Palin any time soon. Despite McCain’s pledge of transparency — even proposing a regular President’s question time with Congress modeled after the British version — he has been shutting off press access for months. Yesterday, a Time reporter explained that McCain bizarrely refused to answer his questions, “like he’d been body-snatched.”

Davis insisted that “there are no strings attached” to media access to McCain. Yet just this week, McCain abruptly canceled an interview with Larry King as punishment for a tough CNN interview with one of his spokesmen. What’s more, top McCain aide Mark Salter said that “only the good reporters” would get the best seats in the new campaign plane. “You have to earn it,” he said.

Davis told MSNBC that Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) “didn’t do a single interview until a week after his nomination,” but the assertion is false. Biden and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) sat for an interview with 60 Minutes “just moments after” Obama left the stage at the Democratic convention.

Uh, so if the Republican PARTY thinks it's better for citizens to know LESS, or SPIN-ONLY on Palin, they'll avoid interviews.

And if the citizens of this COUNTRY want to know MORE? Interviews would be a good way to do that.

So much for "Country First".

(Epiphany! I just realized that the "country" in "Country First" is like in country-western, and is code for "redneck first")

They have an interesting, and possibly winning, strategy.

They've also laid the groundwork that the Press is being mean to her. They've had all sorts of surrogates spouting that she's been bombarded with inappropriate personal questions, even though not a one of them could cite a single instance.

But the "noise" of it is out there.

So they feel they can "control" what the public sees and hears of her, and they are only going to present the SP that was introduced to them during her nomination acceptance speech.

The public will be hungry for info, but the seed has already been planted that the media has abused her and will continue to do so. So the campaign is gambling that people's "protect the underdog" instinct will kick in and any time the media presses for access, the campaign will look like heroes.

Perfect strategy, if playing only to their base.

Not so sure how it's going to play out for the independents or swing voters. But it could be a winner if what is happening over the silly US Weekly story is true.

US Weekly carried the same story the other 2 rags did, but used a different tag line, "Babies, Lies, and Scandals."

There have been reports that people were outraged and there have been claims that something like 5,000-10,000 subscription cancellations because of it.

For the record, I quickly went and subscribed online. I hate that rag, but I considered it a "donation" to the Obama camaign!

It's a fair characterization, since the Repugs have NOT allowed the public to see what the make-up of this woman really is about. With all due respect, Laura, I think you are totally wrong there. I mean, in your list, not in the fact they don't want her questioned.

The media isn't going to ask her about her daughter's pregnancy, her alleged affair, or her son that we never see photographed with her (I don't even know what that means or implies!)

But they do not want the media to ask about:

1) Troopergate.
2) the list of the titles of the books she allegedly tried to ban
3) her connections with her pastors and the Dominionists
4) her supporting of the Bridge to Nowhere before her not supporting it
5) her justifications for her earmarks, in light of her claims of being a reformer
6) will she release her school records so we can see any papers and/or grades
7) why she attended so many schools and why it took her 6 years to complete a 4-year degree
8) why she didn't participate in or join any college clubs or associations
9) where the $20+M debt came from on her departure as mayor. . . . after walking into the position with a surplus and having had funneled in to the town an almost vulgar amount of earmarks
10) her alleged hacking into a state official's computer to steal his emails
11) her two-year gap in employment
12) her support for Ted Stevens, before her tepid non-support of him
