Obama sends female supporters to blunt Palin's impact

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - The Obama campaign is planning to send out some high-profile female supporters, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, to blunt Sarah Palin's potential to draw women's support to the Republican ticket.

Besides Clinton, Governors Janet Napolitano of Arizona and Kathleen Sebelius (seh-BEEL'-yuhs) of Kansas are also scheduled to campaign for Obama in the coming weeks.

Obama's chief strategist says the campaign respects John McCain's V.P. pick. David Axelrod calls Palin "a skilled politician" who's "deft at going on the attack."

Sebelius got things started yesterday, saying of Palin's acceptance speech that she had "mastered the words written by the Bush speechwriters" but didn't address the issues voters speak about every day.
Clinton is set to arrive Monday in Florida.

Napolitano advocates education and immigration reform. As a Democratic governor, Napolitano sought funding for the public education system, health care programs, teachers pay, state government workers pay, and prison employees pay.[8] She signed legislation that offered voluntary full day kindergarten throughout Arizona.[8] Napolitano opened the nation’s first state counter-terrorism center,[citation needed] signed legislation for a prescription drug card for seniors[1] and signed into law property and income tax cuts, which were proposed by the Republican legislature.[8]

In her first year as governor, the state's budget improved from a billion-dollar deficit in the year after the September 11, 2001 attacks to a billion-dollar surplus, without a tax increase.[1] Every budget Napolitano has signed has been balanced. However, the projected 2008 budget has a deficit of $1 billion.[9]

Clinton's camp says the message will be honed on her long-standing appeal to kitchen-table issues that helped her win 18 million votes, but not the nomination. There are no plans for Clinton to directly engage Palin, largely because the election is about the president, not vice president.

Obama's senior advisers say they cannot allow Palin to paint herself as the come-from-nowhere insurgent — a role that once belonged to Obama.

"For someone who makes the point that she's not from Washington, she looked very much like she'd fit in very well there when you see how she brings these attacks, they all felt very familiar to Americans who are used to this kind of thing from Washington," Axelrod said.

Obama himself dodged the question about how to treat Palin, only the second woman nominated as a major party's vice presidential pick and the GOP's first.

"I think she's got a compelling story, but I assume that she wants to be treated the same way that guys want to be treated, which means that their records are under scrutiny," Obama told reporters in York. "I've been through this for 19 months. She has been through it — what — four days so far?"

It was slightly more polite than Axelrod: "She tried to attack Senator Obama by saying he had no significant legislative achievements. Maybe that's what she was told."
The McCain campaign, keenly aware of the potential of their nontraditional pick, immediately used any criticism of Palin as a sign of sexism.
