I know there are lots of things each of you care about, and each of us has different priorities in life, for ourselves and for our families.
My dad is one of those "frequent emailers" who seeks out all the anti-Obama material and mass mails it to literally hundreds of people. It's his hobby. He does it all day long. I get bombarded with these sometimes 5 or 6 times a day.
The funny thing about it is, he
knows they are all untrue. He
knows it's bullshit and it's designed to label and smear Obama to keep people continually questioning what he's about and whether we
really "know" who this guy is.
But it's all crap and all shit and he laughs about it. It's entertainment for him.
Anytime I bother to reply back with the facts to debunk him, he cheerily retorts, "Don't confuse the issue with the truth!"
So mostly I just ignore him.
But I went to the Obama Tax Cut Calculator link because I was curious, especially after Palin & McCain's charge that Obama wants to raise taxes on us "Amur-ikins."
I tried a bunch of different permutations, and, as expected and as we all know anyway, that's just plain wrong and another LIE that the general public will believe.
Anyway, here is the email that I sent to my dad a little while ago. He just turned 73 last week. He has an engineering degree from Cornell, and is retired from a well-paying job, but he ain't rich. So it confuses me. I know he will ignore it, but I just had to make my appeal:

Dad,
I KNOW you're not voting FOR McCain, not actively, anyway, only passively by voting for an unwinnable 3rd party. I understand your convictions and your passion for the Libertarian party. I really do.
But setting that aside for a moment, check out the tax cut calculator in this link.
http://alchemytoday.com/obamataxcut/This page also has a graphic (from the Washington Post) that breaks down the income brackets, in a general way for FAMILY INCOME, in 2008 dollars:
http://alchemytoday.com/obamataxcut/details.htmlhttp://alchemytoday.com/obamataxcut/details.htmlI have always been amazed at how easily people will vote against their own economic best interests and confuse or conflate a presidential election with some sort of opinion poll that's about wedge issues.
We (I mean "we" as a nation) let the GOP confuse us with rhetoric about flag lapels (which McCain didn't even see fit to wear during his acceptance speech last night), or the fact that the Democratic candidate was Herman Munster in Drag (Kerry) or a guy with the personality of a rock (Gore).
We've seen what 12+ years of GOP control has done to us, economically, 8 years of that under Bush. And even though the Dems have had a plurality, not a Fillibuster-proof majority, roughly the last 2 years, the GOP
continues to stall, sandbag and derail every attempt anyone, Democratic, Independent, or even, god-bless'em, Moderate Republicans, has tried to do to stop the economic bleeding. And then blames the Dems.
The GOP does NOT want to let go of its stranglehold, it has actually GROWN government in all the WRONG places and outsourced it in others so much so that the deficit is nearly to the point of unfixable. While it pretends that it's not taxing us literally, it is "taxing" us through lost jobs, higher wages, higher energy costs, higher costs for education, a home foreclosure debacle that has no end in sight. . .I don't need to go on. Just look around.
Yet, somehow, large segments of the general public still believe that the GOP is the best we've got and the answer lies with voting into office people who will protect us from those scary gays who want to marry, or some other equally divisive, but not relevant "values" issue.
How does this happen? Seriously, Dad, I really want to know, because it's completely unfathomable to me!
I wish people would look at their kids and grandkids and ask themselves, "Do I really care what their future looks like? Do I really want their place in what used to be the proud Middle Class of America denied because a bunch of oil men and right wing religious fanatics hijacked my country? Or does some bogus issue, like amending the constitution to outlaw flag burning really TRUMP that?"
I don't want a lot for them. Just the chance for a college education, if they want it, a comfortable paying job that will allow them to buy a home, a new car once in a while, and a few weeks out of the year to spend time with their families at the beach.
You know, the things you wanted for us.
The things we were able to achieve.
The things that up until a few years ago
was achievable for them, but may now be all but lost.
. . . . unless we stop this insanity, our Middle Class will be gone, right along with the additional 605,000 jobs our economy lost just this year alone. Today, what a proud day for our economy! We broke the 6% mark, unemployment is now 6.1%, the highest it's been in five years.
I'm starting to ramble here, but this is my heart.
This is what I'm afraid of.
This is what keeps me up at night and haunts me through each and every day.
We. Must. Stop. Them.
Please. Think about your vote. Understand that much, fuck,
all of what you have been told and spread about Obama is bogus and designed by the architects of the people who don't want us to "look behind the curtain" so that they can continue to scare us into keeping them in power. These are people of great wealth keeping these myths going. It worked for them 2 election cycles in a row. They're wholly confident it will work for them again this one.
Please. Think about it.Don't let them be right. . .
