Can you imagine hearing about the Hells Angels in the news again during the 21st century? This could turn out to be one ugly turf war in Cal.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Police and residents in San Francisco's Outer Mission neighborhood were on edge after SFPD investigators identified a man killed in the area as the president of the San Francisco branch of the Hells Angels motorcycle club.

The victim, 46-year-old Mark Guardado, was shot at about 10:30 p.m. outside a bar at 24th Street and Treat Avenue in the city's Mission District, police said.

Authorities said Guardado was recently in Sonoma County court, facing felony charges in connection to an altercation in Petaluma last February.

On the evening of February 10, Guardado and the vice president of the Sonoma County chapter of the Hells Angels, 31-year-old Jonathon Nelson, got into a fight in Petaluma with a patron at McNear's Saloon & Dining House, Petaluma police Sgt. Jim Stephenson said.

The patron was knocked out in the fight, Stephenson said.

Guardado and Nelson were arrested at the scene on charges of assault with great bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon and gang enhancements, Stephenson said.

Both men were later released on bail, but Petaluma police seized Guardado's Hells Angels jacket with his president's patch sewn on, and still have possession of the jacket, Stephenson said.

Police were investigating reports that Guardado was shot by a member of The Mongols, a rival motorcycle club. The Mongols are based in Southern California, but there are local chapters in Modesto and San Jose, authorities said.

The Mongols and the Hells Angels clashed six years ago at Harrah's Casino in Laughlin, Nevada. The incident left three people dead.

I just want to ride my bike in peace. I have no need for a gang to start my Harley and keep it on two wheels. I have gone on Hell's Angles poker runs and had a great time, while raising money for charities. I quit going to Laughlin run due to the yuppie invasion. When it was young, it was fun. Gang violence and police everywhere, no thanks. I can ride to the beach and still stop by Neptune's or the Rock store. On Sunday I have passed Jay Leno many a times. He knows a good hangout too.

Has anyone read this book about an undercover agent who successfully infiltrated the Mongols M.C.? It's an interesting book to read

Under and Alone: The True Story of the Undercover Agent Who Infiltrated America's Most Violent Outlaw Motorcycle Gang (Paperback)

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. This harrowing, turbocharged account of undercover life is reminiscent of Joseph D. Pistone's Donnie Brasco. After military service in Vietnam, Queen began his law enforcement career, eventually spending 20 years as an ATF special agent. In 1998, through contact with a "confidential informant," he began to hang with the Mongol Nation, a violent Southern California motorcycle club ("a tight-knit collective of crazies, unpredictable and unrepentant badasses") with 20 chapters in several states and 350 members both in and out of prison. Assuming the role of bearded biker "Billy St. John," Queen entered into a 28-month undercover operation. To gather evidence of homicide, weapons and narcotics violations, he sometimes wore a wire, knowing that its discovery could lead to his murder. Indeed, he was suspected at first of being a cop and forced to prove himself in more than a few dangerous situations. But after months of hazing, he became a trusted member. Queen steers clear of melodrama and captures both sides of his double life; the sadistic characters and criminal camaraderie are contrasted with his own inner turmoil, as he thought of the Mongols as his friends while the investigation escalated. The strength and white-hot intensity of the writing make this read like a movie, and Hollywood is certain to take note. 16 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW. (On sale Apr. 5)

Queen risked his life when he joined the Mongols as bearded biker Billy St. John. His adventures with one of America’s most notorious bike gangs, where he explains "murder and mayhem have become simply a lifestyle choice," resulted in the convictions of more than 50 Mongols and earned him an impressive cache of awards. More important, after harrowing trials that included selling drugs to driving getaway cars, Queen lived to tell all about it. Queen recounts these two years with a straightforward gruffness that captivated critics. His story is tight, suspenseful, and unstoppable—you know he’s going to bust the men who became like brothers to him, but it’s just a matter of when and how. The movie version starring Mel Gibson is slated for 2006.

I was locked up with an Arizona HA bigwig at Florence. Believe me when I tell you, these people are among the dumbest MFs I've ever seen.

I moved to Benicia in 1964 at the age of 10. The following year, a group of about 50 Angels came into town and wound up in a beef with about 100 locals. At the time, there were only 4 cops in Benicia and they hit the panic button. While the locals proceeded to kick HA butt and Mr. Core documented the donneybrook on his 8 MM movie camera, the CHP brought in a paddy wagon and a semi and parked them both on First St. by the Park, the only exit out of town since the fight was at the end of the street by the bay. As it ranged up and down about a four block section of the end of the street, the CHP had the Fire Dept. turn out and hose the street down with soapy water. As the Angels jumped on their bikes and came screaming up First St., they hit the soapy water and dumped their bikes. The CHP then threw the Angel into the paddy wagon and the bike into the semi. Needless to say, we ran them out of town. The greatest thing was the headline in the Vallejo Times-Herald the next day:

Benicia Hoodlums Riot!

In 2000, I was working a bore in Santa Susanna pass and one of the guys on the construction crew was an old classmate of mine. We were talking about the incident for about 15 minutes and then we noticed that ALL the rest of the crew and observers(about 15) were listening to it with their mouths wide open. Finally, it was Chief Charlie of the Owl Clan Chumash who uttered the now immortal phrase:

Damn! Where the hell did you two grow up?

His story is fascinating, but I'm frankly insulted by the repeated claim that he never engaged in any illegal activities while undercover, for example always managing to fake ingesting all manner of drugs thanks to countless "lucky breaks," unexpected interruptions, palmed joints and so forth.

He can't have it both ways at once, that these guys were fiendishly smart and always alert and constantly testing him, AND he was 100% successful in avoiding having to engage in anything illegal.

I think it's the discovery channel that's running a lengthy docu that has him telling and reenacting all the tales, and in that context I thought he came off as being full of shit. Not that there wasn't danger, and some really deadly MFers, but he does seem to puff up his adept handling of everything.

I'm sorry to say then that your not a real biker. My bike may not be a Harley, but I have the proper attitude that goes along with being a real hardcore biker.
