Full Version: It's because he's black isn't it?

I love this editorial and I can identify with what he's saying. Once you've determined that fact then the argument takes on a new flavor and is easier to win. Once you get the fact that he's black out of the way then it's all about issues. smile.gif

QUOTE
(CNN) -- One of the most intriguing conversations I had at either the Democratic or Republican convention was with a white labor leader from Ohio.

I can't remember his name, but he made it clear that he is going all around the Rust Belt state looking his white union brothers and sisters in the eye and essentially shaming them into supporting Sen. Barack Obama for president.

No, he's not saying vote for the black man for president because he's black.

He said he's telling them that it's shameful that as Democrats, they agree with him on various political issues, but because of his skin color, they are refusing to cast ballots for him.

"We have gone to our black brothers and sisters for years to support our [white] candidates, and it's wrong for us to stand here and not support one of their own, even though we're Democrats," he barked.

There is nothing more in-your-face than to hear someone speak truthfully to the inherent racism that is at play in this election.

For all the talk about inclusion and the historic nature of this campaign, the true tribal feelings of so many people will come into play, whether we want to admit it or not.

Here are three great rules to follow.
QUOTE
So what do we do when it comes to our tendency to follow group identification?

1. Stop dancing around the topic. When you watch TV and hear folks talk about Wal-Mart moms or small, rural towns, they are talking about white Americans. These catch phrases never include African-Americans or Hispanics

2. Confront bias where it is. Ask your friends, neighbors, co-workers and church members who they are voting for. When they give you the "I really can't put my finger on it" line, then press them. Hard. You know the real answer, so don't beat around the bush. The best folks to challenge Americans on their hang-ups regarding age, race and gender aren't the AARP, NAACP or NOW. It's Y-O-U. Don't give in to the "That's the way I was raised" mantra. When someone suggests that flags and faith show that a candidate isn't one of us, drill down.

3. Accept the fact that some people will not change. We all think that we have been gifted to the degree that our sane and logical arguments can get folks off their biased stumps. Some people just won't give in. Fine, move on. The goal is to rid our society of as much bias as possible. If someone is so hard-headed, then you have to go on to the next person and try to change them.

It's critical that we be as honest as possible about the impact of race, age and gender in campaigns. A lot of people love to toss around the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote that he hoped one day people would be judged by "the content of their character." But it's still a reality that skin tone, gender and our birth date means more than character to a lot of Americans.

Yes, if you are walking down the street and people are asked to identify you, they would identify you as either black or white depending on how light your skin is, or isn't. Having one black and one white parent might legally make you mulatto, but as far as the man on the street is concerned, you are black.

Or, if you are light skinned enough you could pass for Italian.

As it happens, one day my band was touring New England. I was walking down the street one afternoon. A car drove by and yelled "You fuckin Spic!" I replied "I ain't a spic , I'm a N!&&er!" Just because someone is dark skinned, it doesn't mean they are black. The child of one black man and one white woman is not black. The child of one black man and one white woman is.

Just for the record, I get mistaken for a Samoan more often then black.

Look, I know that, you know that, but right now in our society if you are dark skinned you are black. Even if you are what is known as "high yellow" you are still considered black.

I wish it were different but it isn't. This is why Arabs and other nationalities/races from the Middle East are known to the crude as sand n*****s. That doesn't make it right, it just makes it the way it is right now in our culture. Its unfortunate but change takes time.

And then only for the white fetus as long as its in the womb. Once that sucker is born all bets are off! If the kid can grow up with enough education and connection they can do better than a black child, but we are all on our own as far as our government is concerned right now.

Yeah, carmen...you can include this southern hemisphere country of Australia that I'm visiting right now.

A few racial issues still here, too...just with a different accent.

BTW...don't know if this has been mentioned on the board yet, but the word mulato is from the Spanish "mulo", meaning mule.

As this country (hopefully) evolves slowly to really believing that "all (wo)men are created equal," there will be an inflection point, as the country transitions from mostly racist to mostly not. One of the reasons I detest the Bush administration is that IMO they made bigotry acceptable, as we seemed to be set back 50 years. One of the reasons I love Obama is that I believe that he pretty singlehandedly was able to push us "over the top" of the halfway point. And the reason I really detest McCain is that he is USING people's weakness for his own ends. I hate that. This is a battle for USA's soul. What matters is what we aspire to, less than what we were. And this is the time to be counted.

Well, remember our country had the "One Drop" policy concerning racial status.

Just imagine if the white people who cannot vote for Obama for "can't put my finger on it" had to get a transfusion of blood in a hospital only to find out that it came from a black man. biggrin.gif

Yeah, they set us way back. Its like losing weight or getting out of debt, so easy to get into a mess but so hard and slow to get out of it. I feel like we lost decades of hard work in just 8 very long, I mean short, years.

According to the official 1860 U.S. census slave schedules there were hundreds of thousands of mulattoes in chains. They did not disappear. They just stopped classifying them as such. I am not exactly white but there is not a line in my family that does not have people classified as mulatto. If you do the research you will see the point at which the same people who were classified as mulatto were then classified as black or negro. It is just a fact of life and the reality of what happens to women in bondage. Deal with it.

This stuff makes me nuts.

My mother was French, but there was some "Moorish (north african)" blood in there somewhere. So my French cousin the pyschiatrist looks like Cochise. My French aunt is dark and my sister was always confused for native American. My wife is half Japanese. My cousin lives in Beijing, married to a Korean woman and they just had their first child. This obsession with skin color makes me crazy. Everyone has to come to terms with "who they are", but at least for me, because of the tangle of cultures/races in my life, my answer to that question has nothing to do with skin.

It is all so freakin stupid. If we lost part of our neocortex and the world told us we came from a tribe of elite baboons we would believe them and be offended if anyone questioned the honor of baboons.
