It might be out of range for most under the bell curve, but I loved Obama's chess move on Letterman the other day. Here's the relevant part of the transcript:
QUOTE
Dave: "Now what I like about this scenario is because they demanded, the Republicans demanded an apology."
Obama: "Yes, they did."
Dave: "So that means there had been a meeting at some point somewhere along the line."
Obama: "All of them."
Dave: "Yeah, they got together and they said, 'You know what? He called our vice presidential candidate a pig.'" (audience laughs) "Well, that seems pretty unlikely, doesn't it?"
Obama: "It does. But keep in mind that, technically, had I meant it that way, she would have been the lipstick, you see?" (audience, Dave laugh) "But now we're..."
Dave: "I don't know, you're way ahead of me." (audience laughs)
Obama: "Yeah, the failed policies of John McCain would be the pig."
Obama originally used "lipstick on a pig" thus: lipstick (Palin's crafted persona, change theme) on a pig (GWB / Republican failures). No equating Palin to a pig.
Then the Republicans accused him of sexism. THEY introduced the thought that perhaps Palin was a pig. True sexism, but you have to forgive them, since they're Republicans and can't help it.
Then the quote by Obama, explaining that in the metaphor, Palin is the lipstick, embarrassing Republicans by exposing their own sexism. Such a gentlemanly repartee.
Man, it'd be so great to have YEARS of a President who could keep them in line like that, showing them for the sociopaths they are.
