Full Version: Education or Pigs? Which Do You Want to Talk About?

No, no, can't talk about the issues.

Why do you think John McSame and Caribou Barbie are so desperate to talk about lipsticked pigs?

Because in that same speech, Obama laid down an incredibly detailed plan to fix the public education system in this country.

And boy, we sure can't talk about that -- especially since Republicans basically have been trying to gut public education for 40 years now, so they can hustle all those vulnerable young minds into Charter Religious Schools where they can be instructed to disdain science and vote Republican.

Barack's Educational Plan (by contrast) Includes:

QUOTE
Early Childhood Education

  • Zero to Five Plan: Obama's comprehensive "Zero to Five" plan will provide critical support to young children and their parents. Unlike other early childhood education plans, Obama's plan places key emphasis at early care and education for infants, which is essential for children to be ready to enter kindergarten. Obama will create Early Learning Challenge Grants to promote state "zero to five" efforts and help states move toward voluntary, universal pre-school.
  • Expand Early Head Start and Head Start: Obama will quadruple Early Head Start, increase Head Start funding and improve quality for both.
  • Affordable, High-Quality Child Care: Obama will also provide affordable and high-quality child care to ease the burden on working families.

K-12

  • Reform No Child Left Behind: Obama will reform NCLB, which starts by funding the law. Obama believes teachers should not be forced to spend the academic year preparing students to fill in bubbles on standardized tests. He will improve the assessments used to track student progress to measure readiness for college and the workplace and improve student learning in a timely, individualized manner. Obama will also improve NCLB's accountability system so that we are supporting schools that need improvement, rather than punishing them.
  • Make Math and Science Education a National Priority: Obama will recruit math and science degree graduates to the teaching profession and will support efforts to help these teachers learn from professionals in the field. He will also work to ensure that all children have access to a strong science curriculum at all grade levels.
  • Address the Dropout Crisis: Obama will address the dropout crisis by passing his legislation to provide funding to school districts to invest in intervention strategies in middle school - strategies such as personal academic plans, teaching teams, parent involvement, mentoring, intensive reading and math instruction, and extended learning time.
  • Expand High-Quality Afterschool Opportunities: Obama will double funding for the main federal support for afterschool programs, the 21st Century Learning Centers program, to serve one million more children.
  • Expand Summer Learning Opportunities: Obama's "STEP UP" plan addresses the achievement gap by supporting summer learning opportunities for disadvantaged children through partnerships between local schools and community organizations.
  • Support College Outreach Programs: Obama supports outreach programs like GEAR UP, TRIO and Upward Bound to encourage more young people from low-income families to consider and prepare for college.
  • Support English Language Learners: Obama supports transitional bilingual education and will help Limited English Proficient students get ahead by holding schools accountable for making sure these students complete school.

Recruit, Prepare, Retain, and Reward America's Teachers

  • Recruit Teachers: Obama will create new Teacher Service Scholarships that will cover four years of undergraduate or two years of graduate teacher education, including high-quality alternative programs for mid-career recruits in exchange for teaching for at least four years in a high-need field or location.
  • Prepare Teachers: Obama will require all schools of education to be accredited. (That is the one those wackadoodle religious wingnuts don't want you to hear about, because many of their little charter schools are NOT accredited) He will also create a voluntary national performance assessment so we can be sure that every new educator is trained and ready to walk into the classroom and start teaching effectively. Obama will also create Teacher Residency Programs that will supply 30,000 exceptionally well-prepared recruits to high-need schools.
  • Retain Teachers: To support our teachers, Obama's plan will expand mentoring programs that pair experienced teachers with new recruits. He will also provide incentives to give teachers paid common planning time so they can collaborate to share best practices.
  • Reward Teachers: Obama will promote new and innovative ways to increase teacher pay that are developed with teachers, not imposed on them. Districts will be able to design programs that reward accomplished educators who serve as a mentor to new teachers with a salary increase. Districts can reward teachers who work in underserved places like rural areas and inner cities. And if teachers consistently excel in the classroom, that work can be valued and rewarded as well.

Higher Education

  • Create the American Opportunity Tax Credit: Obama will make college affordable for all Americans by creating a new American Opportunity Tax Credit. This universal and fully refundable credit will ensure that the first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans, and will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the average public college or university and make community college tuition completely free for most students. Obama will also ensure that the tax credit is available to families at the time of enrollment by using prior year's tax data to deliver the credit when tuition is due.
  • Simplify the Application Process for Financial Aid: Obama will streamline the financial aid process by eliminating the current federal financial aid application and enabling families to apply simply by checking a box on their tax form, authorizing their tax information to be used, and eliminating the need for a separate application.

But then, all that stuff is about how to actually RUN GOVERNMENT, something Republicans are distinct incapable of doing effectively.

So the Republicans are running scared, talking about something, ANYTHING else, than the things which might improve your lives -- BECAUSE THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR LIVES!!!

Starbuck
Bingo. The GOP do not want to discuss the issues, they want to create fake outrage to distract people.

Ha! LOVE the "Mooselini" image. Priceless.

Yeah, it's all about manufactured insults and perceived slights, to manipulate people into talking about stuff that barely rises to the level of Paris Hilton gossip.

But what can they do with a candidate that stuck in the mud of failure, and a another who's so mindbogglingly ignorant?

They have no choice, but the country suffers, because we really NEED to have these discussions.

We have large-scale, hard-core real world problems that if we don't solve, and I mean now, America is OVER. We simply don't have time to fuck around with this mindless crap.

I think he's got some really great ideas in there.

I like the universal preschool - that is hugely important, and that is the foundation for all that follows. Measures of brain activity show that during the second half of a child's first year, the prefrontal cortex, the seat of forethought and logic, forms synapses at such a rate that it consumes twice as much energy as an adult brain. That furious pace continues for the child's first decade of life. During the first month of life, the number of connections or synapses, dramatically increases from 50 trillion to 1 quadrillion. If an infant's body grew at a comparable rate, his weight would increase from 8.5 pounds at birth to 170 pounds at one month old. and the brain remains a literal SPONGE for the first 10 years of life, in ways that it never will again. Getting in solid, early education is absolutely critical.

I also like the offer of college tuition for even mid-career professionals who are willing to teach for four years, and the increased pay for experienced teachers mentoring new recruits.

And this phrase I find particularly important "teachers should not be forced to spend the academic year preparing students to fill in bubbles on standardized tests", because No Child Left Behind as it currently stands isn't teaching kids to learn, it's just teaching them to take tests. There is a MASSIVE difference between that, and full comprehension.

I also like the simplification of the application process for college Financial Aid.

Actually I don't find any weak point in his plan -- stronger math and science education, better English language education, improved access to child care for working parents, a commitment to FIX free universal public education for all rather than abandoning it -- all great stuff. Can't go wrong with any of it.

If repukes are pushed on the issue of education, all they've got to say is that it will cost too much. Huh??? What they don't want to talk about is how much it will cost if we don't educate our children, and of course, adults and everyone. The huge costs, both monetarily and societal, are huge. But, they don't talk about that. They just talk about their concept of the here and now. You know...... that shortsighted nonsensical argument. Obama really needs to put that front and center in his education plan.

But they're willing to LITERALLY thrown gobs of money down the toilet in Iraq at a rate that is just fucking incomprehensible.

Destruction and mayhem? Yeah, they'll pay for that. Hell, they'll mortgage your children's future for that. But teach kids how to read, and do math and science, and love learning itself so that they educate themselves throughout their lives?

Oh HELL no. That they want to prevent at all costs.

You got that 100% right. I bet any of us could open a local newspaper right now and find this same argument being played out in print.

How can we afford NOT TO invest in education??? banghead.gif hairpull.gif

THE REASON THEY WANT TO LIMIT EDUCATION TO POORER STUDENTS IS TO SAVE THE HIGH PAYING JOBS AND PROFESSIONS FOR THEIR OWN CHILDREN THAT ATTEND PRIVATE SCHOOLS...THE REASON I SAY THIS IS I WENT TO THOSE PRIVATE SCHOOLS AND WERE TOLD FIRST HAND ABOUT THIS PLAN!! BUT I LEARNED HOW TO RECOGNIZE HOW UNCHRISTIAN THIS WAS EVEN THOUGH I DON'T BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE AS ABSOLUTE FACT FROM THAT LARGE MAN IN THE SKY!!

Wow. I've been watching a lot of news. I didn't realize that Obama spoke about education in that speech (really!) I figured it was about either farming or beauty (not really).

Wow. I've been watching a lot of news. I didn't realize that Obama spoke about education in that speech (really!) I figured it was about either farming or beauty (not really).

I only heard about that by accident myself, at 2am on the radio, as the hosts talked about how Obama wasn't talking about Palin at all, and a caller who apparently was at the speech in question, told how the rest of the speech was this amazingly detailed plan about how to fix education, and she was frustrated that nobody was talking about it, because she was concerned about her kids future, not some silly insult, that wasn't even an insult.

So the take away lesson here is, if you want to work graveyard shift, you might actually hear some news, but it won't from actual journalists anymore, but rather from your fellow citizens on the ground.
