Schadenfreude: A German expression for the taking of pleasure in the misfortune of others

It occurred to me this week that America's headlong slam into a financial crisis, planned by the Bush White House to arrive conveniently some time after their safe departure, has gotten ahead of their game and seriously challenges any Republican claim to fiscal stewardship in a way that they never planned, in the thick of this election campaign.

Sarah Palin, unheard of two weeks ago, terrifyingly a threat to the Dems a week ago, has already jumped the shark as the top news story.

The economy has rapidly forced its way to center stage in this election - it's terrifying more than the Dems and the Republicans own it, congrats to them! That's my schadenfreude.

We are left with a sticks and stones economy after this Republican evisceration: that is their schadenfreude, satisfaction with the mess they leave us.

But surely Dems can now wrest control of the field with an election about policy, about real numbers for real Americans, as Bush-McCain-Palin weaknesses show threadbare, their damage control breaking down.

Still, what a time to win! As we pray this October is not another October 1929.
